I think oxtsu's chronology of arcade shooting should be sticky'd. I have it bookmarked but it should be easily available to all.
I would have to agree with most of your selections, though I think Viewpoint does deserve a higher ranking (if only due to its killer soundtrack). I totally agree with your ranking on Mad Shark (fun diversion I play once in a while), and though I would have ranked Viper Phase 1 in the top five, I see what you're saying on that. Not sure I would have picked Varth as #1, though...

I think you have highlighted the idiosyncratic features of the list: that Viewpoint is so low and Varth so high. Then again, it's not obvious to me that anything on the list is *so* much more popular than Varth.FRO wrote:I would have to agree with most of your selections, though I think Viewpoint does deserve a higher ranking (if only due to its killer soundtrack). *wonders when there'll be a Rob's '96 - '00 arcade countdown: Hidden Gem search and ones from the 1980s too*Rob wrote:I think oxtsu's chronology of arcade shooting should be sticky'd. I have it bookmarked but it should be easily available to all.
Rapid Hero is like a cross between Samurai Aces and the bonus sections of Galaga - on speed. Dangun feveron is afraid of this game.Rob wrote:NMK's Turbo Force.
An Aero Fighters or Psikyo inspired game with a few extra touches of their own. The Psikyo is in the bullets, made clear in all of the patterns. The shakeup comes from the Recca-like masses of small enemies. Scoring system amounts to "don't die or the item value resets" but these swarms of enemies and the slow bullets they release make collecting the bonus items a little risky. I'll take that and the lack of other elements Psikyo would eventually phase out over any early Psikyo game.
It is powerup of laser.

Nah, just muntered.
Except that picking "smart pods" TURNS OFF THE RANK SYSTEM COMPLETELY.Rob wrote:When I credit fed through for the sake of seeing it all it seemed to be about 60-70 minutes long. That's not so bad since it doesn't loop. The short stages make it easier to take in and I don't think about the entire length of the game since I probably won't even hit the second extend.
The "smart" pod type is best ignored. People should just pick the fixed type.
If you use the standard pods, the rank will make you wish you had smart pods with all the shots aimed at your rear.
But if you have the smart pods, it just doesn't happen.
wow does anybody actually look there?Rob wrote:You've been hacked.
<Sidwell> TSS is manlier than a jet figher made of biceps.
Smart pods are rough at the start, where the fixed pods are really handy at those earliest of bosses, but stick with them and the game suddenly becomes a LOT easier.Rob wrote:Supposedly there are more bullets.zaphod wrote: Except that picking "smart pods" TURNS OFF THE RANK SYSTEM COMPLETELY.
Try it yourself. especially if going for the podless clear.
edit: adding something else to thread, so delayed a bit. Not too much. Early January at the latest. I swear. People should be really bored then, right?Rob wrote:78-83 coming February/soon

Wasn't there a countdown for earlier titles as well? I didn't find it on my first search.

I will trust Rob that there are 50 games better than Aero Fighters 2 and Nebulas Ray from this period, but that's a crazy amount of good shmups in a short period. I've been playing these games ranked 51 and 52 respectively, and I think they're both good fun.
I'm still not sure about Viewpoint being at the bottom of the list. If nothing else, I like it for the novelty and graphics.
