You might as well ask the same question about Sparta, or the Mongols, or old Japan, all warrior cultures that consistently had superior military technology. There's at least as much incentive to advance in a war-based society as there is in a mercantile one - bring a knife to a ray-gun fight and you're in for a world of hurt - and a civilization that's constantly at war is under constant pressure to one-up the enemy. In fact, war's been the motivation behind major technologies ranging from forging metal to splitting the atom. Being a warrior does not equate to being an idiot.

Well, when the generals (Tokugawa shogunate) ruled Japan, technology-wise Japan got stuck in the 17th century for nearly 300 years

Here and there it is hinted that scientists hold a lower status but still have free room for research, as long as it can give some new weapon. In one episode it is shown that medicine is not particularly advanced because, well, warriors are supposed to commit suicide if they receive bad wounds. The klingon female engineer makes some comments about the strong "applications-driven" science of klingons, as well.

Not necessarily, but in the case of the Klingons it seems it does.

Just watched Generations on Netflix. I saw it when it came out in theaters but it still rules.

Sadly nothing else except 6 is available for instant viewing. There's original series episodes on cbs.com, also, but that's all I can find. I've been wanting to watch Deep Space Nine from the beginning but I can't find it on the internets (legally). Is it out there?

Also, the new movie is coming out in may of 2009.

You didn't mention it has EVERY EPISODE of TOS! Holy crap dude! Is there anything like this for TNG?

I'm on season 5 of TNG. I used to watch this show when I was younger and now it seems like something is missing here and there. Like, I thought the whole Borg invasion storyline was much longer and in depth than it actually turned out to be. (Best of Both Worlds 1 and 2)
I never got into DS9 or Voyager since I had Babylon 5, Farscape, and Stargate to keep me occupied. I'm thinking about dl'ing a few episodes of Enterprise just to see whats up.
I do hate what they did to Battlestar Galactica. Its not as fun as the original series used to be.

NO! I'm a huge Star Trek fan, but Enterprise was just plain awful. The first two seasons are so bad it's not even funny, things start to pick up in the 3rd season and for the first half of the 4th season Enterprise actually becomes a good show - then it gets cancelled cause it's getting sodomized by Stargate Atlantis in the ratings and the last half of season 4 is really rushed and culminates in one of the worst ST episodes ever. If you're looking for a Star Trek fix then i'd reccomend downloading DS9 and Voyager, DS9 is an awesome series from start to finish and while Voyager is kinda hit and miss there are a load of great episodes.

Why didn't LaForge and Rho just fall "through" the ground of the ship into space

Ok I guess the answer is so they wouldn't just die... and the show could go on.

Anyway, new question:

I've just finished TNG and all the TNG related movies (awesome!), and I'm thinking of moving on to TOS.
Would it be better to watch TOS in its original format or go for those remastered versions?

Me two. I also saw, hmm. STs V and VI as well as First Contact and probably everything else between them...I thing Generations is the first one I haven't watched a second time. Wait, I never watched V all the way through again either.

Okay, I only re-watched VI then. But Generations is good enough to watch a second time. First Contact nearly so.
