When did they go wrong: Compile edition.
Developer of one of the best 80s shooters (Zanac), later went on to develop 10 minute stages of mode 7 effects and avalanches. When did they go wrong?
I haven't played many of the games between Zanac and MUSHA enough or at all, so I leave this one up to you. The more you can narrow it down the better!

Zanac Neo feels like a post-retirement game, better than you might expect but still not very good. Bundling the original keeps it from being an embarrassing release, but on its own you can tell Compile was way past their prime.
Without playing all of their games, I think this has to be MUSHA. Their legacy was destroyed before Robo Aleste's 4th stage.

Gun*Nac is still waiting your apologies for not ranking it the proper way on your NES countdown, btw
Seriously, I was half joking in OT ~ it's not that I need a Compile thread to post. But thank you anyway. (I can comprehend your bitterness towards the post-Zanac production. I don't agree, but I see where it comes from).

You like Terra Cresta's frantic pace and despise Xevious' trudging sloppiness: I guess you should try both the PCE and the MSX2 Xevious. they can get quite hellish, especially PCE, and they're Compile.Rob wrote:I think it's cool they included notable extra difficulty modes, but even those were gone (pretty sure, don't have either anymore) by Robo Aleste and Spriggan.
Still look forward to an HuCard countdown, if you'll ever find the strength to pull it off.

-every stage has like 5 loopsFIL wrote:I don't like Compile shmups and I don't know why, please influence my opinion with bullet points.
-they decided 12 stages of that is good
-they never said no to any idea, no matter how bad
-it only gets challenging if you lose your pyramid-shaped screen-covering laser on the last stage
-all of the points come from the last boss

I'd say around 1993-94. By that time Compile was focused on Puyo Puyo and Disc Station until they closed shop. Probably their best game in the meantime was Shadowrun on the MegaCD which was quite good.
About Zanac X Zanac I was really hyped when I got it. The gameplay was good, but the music was not so great. Most importantly Compile left out the original MSX1 version. Why? That's without question the best Zanac.

Totally disagree. Daisuke Nagata and Kou Hayashi did some really sweet remixes/arranges of the original tunes. Then they went over to MileStone, where they now write awesome techno/synth/trance soundtracks.rolins wrote:About Zanac X Zanac I was really hyped when I got it. *EDIT: Forgot the D&B.

Puyo-puyo single-mindedness comes to mind.
The rest was taken up by various programmers and rejuvenated the 90's style of shmupping (I wrote about this, years ago).
