Eh, couldn't disagree more. I think Ikaruga is still the prettiest shmup out there with Gradius V.
I love the colors and the contrast, love the backgrounds, love Y-Suzuki's enemy design, love everything.
I agree, it's gorgeous, even 6 years on. The art direction and the music combined make it, in my opinion, the most stylistically beautiful shooter ever.
If Cave could make something this gorgeous, I imagine it would be my favourite game of all time.
I agree with the last two posts. Ikaruga is a lovely looking game. Still, I could see a little spit and polish done to a couple of parts, so i'm looking forward to this XBLA version.
I've just watched the videos, they look impressive!
The details are awesome.
Maybe the only flaw is that the score counter and homing meter are too small compared to previous ports, and especially the homing meter is too far from the play screen to be comfortable. Maybe its position is adjustable.
Oh great! You can even flip the homing bar, cool!
In fact I was so accustomed to tate mode that when I switched to yoko to record some stuff from a friend's tv the homing bar was flipped and I had some problems with homing management.

Apologize now, and never speak ill of Ikaruga ever again.

*SMACK*
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
(It would also be good to read what I actually wrote.)
Nevermind that the fact that background objects being seperate from foreground objects is a design mechanic, but go right ahead, 3D games are all ugly as sin and only 2D graphics can attain the beauty that is
so long and tanks for all the spacefish unban shw <Megalixir> now that i know garegga is faggot central i can disregard it entirely
<Megalixir> i'm stuck in a hobby with gays

As it is, Ikaruga could be likened to a really skinny baby with big, fake boobs. I guess most men find that attractive. It ain't pretty though.
SHUMPS --(Thought process?!?)> Skinny girl with fake boobs?

100% bullshit imho. The artdirection in general and especially the ship designs are the most beautiful I've ever seen in ANY shmup...and I've seen and played quite a few. Also, the amount of detail is simply amazing.
@320x240
Your fake boobs "analogy" tells us more about your personal "problems" than about Ikaruga. Quite honestly, I don't even want to know...

I agree with you there. That's why it is even more disappointing to me the way they made the backgrounds fit in the game. Still, it's only bearing the mark of the period in which it was made, just like any other game. Ikaruga is better than most I have seen from the same period, but the direction of the artwork is based on a concept that is ultimately flawed. Each to his own, though.

Although the game is Japanese I guess big breasted babies are a little to much. I have edited the post now. Also, I have left you out from the "joke-a-day" mailing list.

Nobody has called the game ugly. "As ugly as" doesn't neccesarily mean that the object in question is ugly, though it certainly implies that it's not perfect. Saying that a game isn't perfect isn't so hard to do, you know.
Messe-Sanoh has a playable demo of Chapter 1 for the X360 version of Ikaruga right in front of their store. This could mean that the game will be released very soon!
There weren't that many people stopping to play it, so I had a chance to embarrass myself in public.
Good news is it's the same game you all know and love. The option to set the display between vertical and horizontal is unavailable in the demo, but I'm sure will be in the full game. Supposedly the game is HD-enhanced. Not like I'd notice with my shitty eyesight. The game still looks good though. None of that filtering crap that's been done with some other XBLA games.
So if you love Ikaruga (which you should) yet you don't own a 360 (which you should), get one. Now.
