Whatever happened to the Ketsui Dump?

Post by Ceph »

There has been no news since the pcb was shipped to The Guru. What's the current status?

Apologies if this topic is unacceptable.

Haze wrote:it's pgm based. it uses a protection device, with no external rom, and thus pretty much no chance of it being trojaned (for proper emulation of the protection device, not simulation). Also the later pgm caves have execute only internal roms, so even if you do manage to get code running on them you *can't* dump them.

IOW, don't expect it running in MAME anytime soon. It might just require a decap, but as we don't even know if those things are mask / eeprom (I suspect eeprom, and custom part so we can't read them even if we erase protect bits) not even that is really an option.

so yeah, it looks nice.. cave shooters always do, but properly emulated, soon, No.

BTW, what is this worth? I heard it's rare or something?

it might be possible to simulate it (depends what it does, who knows) however I can tell you one thing for sure, Nicola can't psychically read the content of the internal rom of the MCU to emulate it.

Thanks for the replies. Seems Ketsui is one tough cookie.

So if the eeprom has to be decapped in order to readout, it's going to cost a couple of hundred more to dump it...

If Ketsui ever gets dumped would that also lead the way to PGM emulation as well?

After all Ketsui is just a PGM board without a cartridge slot and a different BIOS.

PGM emulation is plenty far along already, both in MAME and in Nebula... the only real holdouts are the later games with protection.

Some PGM games are already emulated?

I thought MAME Dev didn't break the protection yet.

What I find disturbing about the statement is why anyone gives a fuck about what Guru thinks of the game, or why he posts. Will he not dump it b/c he doesn't like it? If he's just talking to talk, fair enough, but it seems dodgy at best.

Guru is pretty renowned in the emulation fraternity. He doesn't mess people about and he doesn't rip people off. I'd imagine that he probably dislikes most of the games he's ripped over the years. It doesn't stop him doing it.

I am right in understanding that people clubbed together and paid money to send him the PCB without knowing when, or even if he would do it?

No, that is incorrect. People here clubbed together, yes, but only because it was known that he would do it.

He said he will do it, or at least try to do it. He played a big part in making CPS2 emulation possible so he really is not just somebody claiming something. Of course he won't say "when"...after all it's not a business he's running. Just hacking and dumping stuff - for fun, glory, technical knowledge and preservation of arcade games :)

(IOW begging us to emulate them is 100% pointless)
I'm more interested to know how the fuck they intend to dump Ibara. He's already got the board as it's crossed off his list.

What the hell!? Is he just being ironic or does he always mean what he says. I find it hard to believe that the SH3 games will be dumped anytime soon.

This seems too good to be true. At the very least I predict the panic selling of some PCBs

Radiant has just edited the original quote that I posted. The most recent games on the wanted list are Mushi/Ibara.
