The Raiden games are really long too, esp. Raiden DX Expert mode.

Don't know what the definitive longest 1st loop shmup is tho.

Isn't Gradius V quite a bit longer than 45 minutes? Maybe I'm mistaken, never actually checked... It's the longest I've ever cleared at any rate.

Radiant Silvergun's Saturn mode felt long as hell. I didn't actually time it, but yeah. It sure felt like a long game.

That's about the time I was thinking too, I always saw at least over 60 minutes quoted back when I was playing GV frequently.

I'll also vote for Silvergun. Saturn mode is around 2 hours, no joke.

Many console only shmups are long. Maybe the dev thought they can make longer games than arcade ones because they are no longer required to get new players to get more coins in.

Zanac games
Star Force
many hudson pce shmups : Star Soldier
many compile shmups : Power Strike 1 & 2 (2 is longer)
Silpheed : The Lost Planet
Meta-Ph-List: Gamma X 2097
Warning Forever
Soldier Force

border liners :
Bangaio
Granada

What about procedurally generated games? Technically, they're infinitely long.

If those don't count, Tyrian is also pretty long.

I need less than 2 hours, without hurry and including time for stores, rereading text, saving games etc. for Tyrian 2000 (5 episodes).
Jets'n'Guns is longer even with the silly superweapons that slaughter some bosses so fast that they mess up their appearance animation: some levels are long and boring, and others are too difficult to be passed at the first attempt.

Varth wins where I'm concerned; maybe not for it's actual time length but percieved length is through the roof

it seems that hori shmups used to be longer and more torturing than vertical ones.
As most in here mentioned already: r-type and gradius.

Silvergun could take 2 hours if you don't score and have wussified weapons for the later bosses =D
