I guess Shatterhand was right, Gigawing turned out to be the bane of the Oldschoolers :( I like the game but couldn't get a very good score in one week (though somehow I still went from 26th to 25th in the rankings). By the end of the week I was just getting to the point where I had a good performance on stage 1 and could at least clear 2,3,4 without dying.

Actually I was developing a blister on my d-pad thumb from playing this  which is kind of funny since the last time that happened was from playing 2D fighters when I first bought a SNES.

Anyway, thanks again to DJI, Edge, and others who made STGT possible.

Yeah thanks to everyone who organized it, it was pretty sort of fun. I forgive you for not letting us play Progear. It took a while, but I forgive you.

I guess I did as bad as I did last year... and this time my teammates couldn´t compensate a lot for me. :(

Ah well, at least I enjoyed the last week and know what my ranking order is again. ;)

Last, but not least, a very big thank you to DJI, Edge and anyone else involved in the organization. Your good work is very much appreciated. :D

Until next time...

Wow, 30th! Heh, I think the only reason I'm there is 'cause I participated in every week. I was planning to take the second week off but I think I received a relatively decent boost (53 points). Maybe I'll go ahead and figure out the single player ranking for those who played in all weeks.

It was pretty fun. I enjoyed all the games. My favorite was Giga Wing, which is also my first reflect-em-up. My least favorite had to be Viper Phase 1. Slow ships and I don't get along (haven't gone past 1-3 on Raiden and Raiden 3!), and coupled with the super strict scoring system I simply couldn't play (well) for points.

I was sorta disheartened with the lacking strat discussions, especially when crithit5000 set up a little forum for our team. I made a bit of an effort to get things going, but I guess it wasn't enough. Oh well, I don't blame you guys, there wasn't much to say I suppose. LDSTGT07 did great!

I'm also a little disappointed in my results. Especially Darius Gaiden...I went ABDGKPZ' and I wasted the opportunity to milk the Great Thing! I must have watched that Youtube replay a dozen times and tried 100 times but I couldn't get by 2 torpedo patterns. I guess that was a big mistake for me, especially after seeing that the only other person who went that route just happened to be you-know-who, hehe (not counting those who probably tried but got to G or something).

Don't know where to go from here. I wrote a little write-up for myself on my blog and it reads as bad as my shmup skills. Guess I'll use this as a drive to improve. My first step is probably back to Guwange as I attempt to get past 10 mil...

And everyone's comments were nice to read, whine et al, heh. Thanks to everyone, both participants and organizers!

It's a shame that I wasn't able to devote enough time to the STGT games.

I really, really did want to be able to have a good place to openly discuss the games and strats, but on my end real life beckons as always. I'm surprised I had enough time to put some decent scores in! I really should have put together some resources on Giga Wing for you fellows, but playing the game irked me enough let alone writing about it.
Kyper wrote:LDSTGT07 did great!
Indeed, I'm quite pleased with our performances, and Squirell, Tain, and Kyper definitely helped improve my scores. I'd post a score and go to sleep...by the time I woke up, it was probably obliterated by those two. I'd then work on trying to beat their scores and repeat the process while keeping up on scores here. Fun stuff, and if they're willing to be apart of next year's team then sweet. Good job, guys.

Herr posted one score in the second half of the week, and Brian C simply never showed.

Yeah, sorry about that. I was really quite useless in the last two playing weeks. (Omega Fighter and Giga Wing.)

I guess real life just sort of got in the way unexpectedly. There was a death in my family and I had lots of organizing to do. The little time I had for myself I decided to spend with my girlfriend rather than with OF and GW. I think I played both games for about 3 hours or something. It's a pity, because on my last few runs I got the feeling that I really could have gotten a good score in Giga Wing had I given it more time.

What I bemoan the most is that prior to the last week we really had the chance to beat Pele Shooting Team, but then we just couldn't make it happen. I feel partly responsible for that due to my poor participation and performance. Well, there's always next year to kick the butts of our Brazilian archnemesis.

Thanks to organizers for the tournament, and thanks to everyone for selecting such great games this time (EXCEPT to those who voted for TwinBee Yahhou, a pox upon you!). Special thanks to The Coop and other team members for sharing vital strategic information. Sorry to hear about your loss, Herr Schatten :/

And to our arch rivals, Team Brazil: Next year you'll get to see the real axé of the Oldschoolers, be warned!

Sorry, I wasn't able to play for a couple of days (although I was more worried about my unfinished thesis on the broken laptop than my GW score...), and when I finally got to play GW again on Sunday on another computer, a weird thing happened: It was much faster than before, and I just couldn't adjust to this new speed. I played first with regular MAME and then with WolfMAME on a slower (!) computer.. wtf? I think the slower speed is the right speed, based on memories of the actual arcade machine.

Differences in emulation speeds may be a bigger factor in these tournaments than anyone's aware of :(

Thanks to all organizers and participants. I really enjoyed this tournament.

I would like some kind of favor/reward for the team that leads the score table through almost the whole week. Just to benefit those who give the other teams concrete goals and motivation. The sniper posts at the end of the week kinda sucked.

I read that MARP had a rule against late submissions (they just refuse INP which are too old), but I think your idea would be even better. I'd be all for it. Only little drawback : it would just need some extra work from the organizers.

Do you plan to program or something, DJ Incompetent ? (I read "implementation").

Congratulations to everyone. I enjoyed the tournament for it being my first time as to really taking part in the high score boards here on SHMUPs. Perhaps this will be my motivation to keep on it a bit more and to post my personal bests. ;)

Oh, and thank you DJI for inviting me to your crew.

Hope things are okay mate. Like Icarus said, personal matters are more important than beating the brazilian deserters :)

Well, you guys wouldn't stand a chance anyway :) Looking forward to next year.

I guess Shatterhand was right, Gigawing turned out to be the bane of the Oldschoolers Sad I like the game but couldn't get a very good score in one week (though somehow I still went from 26th to 25th in the rankings). By the end of the week I was just getting to the point where I had a good performance on stage 1 and could at least clear 2,3,4 without dying.
I must admit I was really surprised with my own score. Like I said on the main thread, ask me for tips about scoring in Gigawing, and I will just tell you "I have no idea". I just set a goal to try to get further than level 6 that week (It was the fartest I'd had ever got before, though I would usually die at level 5). I basically played by survival and finishing the game actually made my best personal score raise by more than 10 trillion.

When I actually TRIED to memorize the best parts to score, watch videos and stuff, I couldn't beat the game nor beat my score, which became frustrating very quickly.

So is there going to be a "criticism and what to fix for next year " thread, or has DJI had enough bitching already? Also, NMK week next year, you know you want it.

(sorry for such a late reply)
I really enjoy reading about the speed runs. Contra(NES) was one game I thought I could play fast and have fun doing it (though I do not think I could do it in under 11 minutes). Everytime I play Contra I aim for a quick play through and have fun doing so :D

I regret I do not have fun playing game for score

However I did enjoy being in the STGT for the team aspect. It was fun to be on a team in this league. I wish I was able to do more and do better to help my team but it was not meant to be  The Avengers are a really 2 man show and I like to thank Davey for signing with us this season. He was truly a huge acquisition and helped our team. I also like to thank Ayanami for his leadership and holding this team together. I also like to thank the rest of my teammates and would hope to continue to play for the Avengers for many seasons. I feel we are one star player from being a top teir team and our twin towers will be a force to reckon with next season. For me I'll continue to be a role player and and offer support when I'm out there.

Thanks again to everyone.
See you next season…

I fell apart on the last two weeks, so as ya do. But I still had fun none the less and also learned to enjoy some different games while playing. It was fun and would love to do it again next year.

Big thanks to the rest of the team even though some people had a hard time participating. Sonic R, you did well man. I would not count you out of playing for score just yet. :D
