Is the Wii going to be the new shmup console of choice?

Wii has two strong points: ease of development and cheapness of hardware. Meaning that if I, for instance, wanted to buy a console for shmups only, Wii would be an easy choice: it's the cheapest current gen console available, and it has the most freedom when it comes to controls. Of course, it's an obvious wish for shmups as a particular genre to be released on it for those reasons (however, I personally don't own any modern console, nor planning to buy one any time soon).

Same here. The only reason I would want a Wii is Sin & Punishment and Brawl. Other than that, I would much prefer to get a DS first.moozooh wrote:Wii has two strong points: ease of development and cheapness of hardware. Oh yeah, DS surely gets some love with its own Ketsui port, new Bangai-O and other good games being in development (or already out). However, it's kinda less convenient to play shmups on it, what with the low resolution and stuff. :\

I don't care about that. As long as I get to play that...and a few other non-shmup related things.moozooh wrote:Oh yeah, DS surely gets some love with its own Ketsui port, new Bangai-O and other good games being in development (or already out). Isn't Dragon Quest 9 coming out on the DS?

I do think that the Wii will be a good console for shmupping... on the import side of things.
Right now there's nothing on the horizon, barring VC releases, other then Star Soldier R, which those of us in the US probably won't get-just like we didn't get Hudson's other Star Soldier re-makes.
Nintendo owns Japan right now, so there will probably be more shmups then just that one, but, again, aside from modding or getting a JP Wii, we'll probably never see them. Nintendo's focus on the Wii over here seems to be releasing a few good games, and letting in tidal waves of crappy titles. They want mini-games, and a few hardcore releases, but I don't think that, outside of the VC, they are at all interested in releasing shmups for the Wii in North America.
On the VC side of things, Turbo Duo games are supposed to be coming, but even then, will people have to buy discs and download the games onto a disc, to play them on their Wii's? Without discs, all you have are ISO's, so that could end up being a problem. (So too could the Wii's lack of memory expansion, which Nintendo will have to deal with sooner or later)
Most of the VC shmups so far have been great releases, but unless they can get some more Compile and some Techno Soft shmups, as well as imports, I don't see the service as being that great for shmupping.
So, no, I seriously doubt that the Wii will end up being the new console of choice for shmups.
