Are there any shmups where the roles are reversed?
Are there any shmups where the roles are reversed?
By that I mean, are there any shmups where you're the lone bad guy, trying to squash the mighty forces of good? An alien race decided to send a single ship to wipe out all of humanity? A lunatic steals the top secret ultimate weapon and uses it against his own people? Anything like that?
The closest I can think of are Mars Matrix and DonPachi (assuming I've got the plots right). The Earth government sends a single ship to squash the Mars rebellion in MM, and in DP it turns out you're fighting your own men in part of a training excercise to pick the top pilots.
But those aren't quite what I was thinking of. Moral implications aside, in MM you're still fighting to preserve Earth's rule. And you don't know you're killing your own men in DP until the end of the first loop.
---
On a side note, this has given me an idea for a side-scrolling shooter:
It's your standard horizontal space shooter, a very organic setting. All the levels are contiguous, one stage leads into the next. When you get to the end of the game, and you beat the enemy queen, she infects you. You become her last remaining drone. Your ship turns around, and you scroll right-to-left, taking down the Earth forces that have taken up positions in the areas you've just liberated.

Yes. It's called "The Reap" and was released for PC.alpha5099 wrote:By that I mean, are there any shmups where you're the lone bad guy, trying to squash the mighty forces of good? You play the innitial attacker in an alien invasion of Earth. Your job is to strike all of Earth's major defenses to soften things up for the rest of the fleet.
The game plays a lot like Viewpoint, with the isometric design. Very pretty game.. which for some reason doesn't want to boot up on my newer computer.

That is a cool idea. It would require some smart level design though.alpha5099 wrote:On a side note, this has given me an idea for a side-scrolling shooter:

Not exactly what alpha is talking about, but there's a flash/java game somewhere where you play as "the evil empire". A lone craft is coming to destroy you and the gameplay consists of you sending ships and missiles and that sort of things at him. I remember it being pretty boring, though.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

That's one of the most original and damn creative shmup concepts I've ever heared. Could be very good if implemented properly. What about in a run n' gun too, it could work quite well there too....alpha5099 wrote:On a side note, this has given me an idea for a side-scrolling shooter:

I think only 2 Bokan shooters were made (though I believe there was also a Bokan racing game on the PS), and yes, both of them send you, as Doronbo and her two stooges, against a whole menagerie of old anime super heroes.Ganelon wrote:IIRC, one or more of the 3 Time Bokan PS shooters involve you playing as Doronjo against the heroes.

my gosh. that idea is very similar to something i've been musing...first loop you fight as the lone human, second loop you fight as the lone alien warrior against the humans.
