Shmups meet Guitar Hero

Post by postman »

I've been tempted to try making some custom tracks for GH, and after researching the process it's not too bad........I finished one but have yet to burn it, but I think I have a command of the process.......

Anyway, I have been trying to think of good shmup music to use for custom tracks. Zuntata stuff or Ikaruga soundtracks are just too complicated to use........if anyone has a decent hard rock style of "Challenger 1985" that would be awesome.......

I will probalby wind up doing a rocked out version of "Justice Ray pt. 2" from the final boss of Thunderforce though.

If anyone has ideas, let me know. I'd need an mp3 file of the song in question also.......

(Hey Nate/Twitch, if Vodkatron wants to cover a certain shmup theme, that would be really cool too........)

Something from Lords of Thunder would be sick. Here is an example of someone playing one of the songs on the OST (just so you get a feel for it).

http://youtube.com/watch?v=LpsNOQPJsok

EDIT: On a somewhat unrelated note - the guy playing the Lords of Thunder track in the video also does the Contra Jungle Jam, which IIRC is an MP3 available on Overclocked Remix (have to check on that one), so that's an idea too.
People I have dealt with successfully: bleem (x2), spazicon, sven666, sparky, iatneH, Dragon1952, kozo, Ghegs

I forgot all about Chris Kline! Lords of Thunder would work PERFECT as a track.........it's a lot of work to build the chart, but it should be fun........I'll certainly put it on my "to do" list. His track is a bit long at 4:49, so I might pick another LOT song to do, plus his version is pretty crazy....another Jordan almost!

Thanks!

Any song from Gate of Thunder or Lords of Thunder would do. Preferrable Lords of Thunder.

Yeah his version is crazy. I assume you would need some kind of visual to make the sheet? If not, there are plenty of other great songs on the OST, PM me if you need any MP3s from it

Thunderforce IV has some insane synth guitar solo stuff. Could work quite well.

You could use a tab sheet to build the chart, but I find it easier to just do it by ear.......

Feedback is a great program, you can listen to the song, pause it and build the chart all in one program. It's a lot of work but the result is great.

I have the LOT soundtrack, but if there are any TF 4 songs that scream Guitar Hero, send them to me and I'll evaluate them to see if they will work.............

Mp3......it has to be converted to an ogg in the end, but mp3 is the best format to start with.....

The underwater level of Lords of Thunder has a sick bass riff to it. I cant actually think of one level of which the music sucks for Lords of Thunder. There should just be a lords of thunder edition to guitar hero with the characters on stage wearing the armor from all of the bosses of the game.

All the shmup songs I'm considering:

Justice Ray (hard guitar remix)
Thunderforce 4 stage 8
Lords of thunder track 15 (Dezant)
Lords of thunder track 7 (2 mins.....I don't have the track names.....)
Lords of thudner track 21 (ending music)

At the least I'll have youtube vids when completed, if others are able to make custom GH discs I'll share the charts......

However, there is a ton of work involved in this, so don't expect any results for a while.....

There are quite a few shmup rock remixes here (there was even a scrolling shooter month). Some of the best on there are Master Hatchet's Raiden remixes, BrainCells and CHM's TF3 remix, etc... if you don't want to go through them yourself, I'll point out the ones I think are best.

http://carbohydrom.free.fr/music.html

CHM's got his own website here, and he's done quite a few shmup rock remixes... off the top of my head, Ikaruga, Twinbee, Zero Wing, etc. Several of them are also on the DoD website, but they're easier to find here.

Good luck. ;)

If you're doing Lords of Thunder, try doing two guitar tracks as opposed to doing guitar and bass. There aren't enough songs that have the players doing harmonies together.

Ok, finished a Lords of Thunder song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unAlkE78Zog

It's track 7 from the soundtrack, anyone have the name?

The synch came out bad on the video, but for the actual chart it seems to be fine. This is the feedback version, before dropping it into Guitar Hero 2, because I don't do another burn until there are lots of songs I want to replace........

If anyone actually makes custom GH 2 discs I'll share the chart if you want it........

Awesome idea.
Would love to be able to play a version of the first level of Fire Shark on GH.

Or is sega genesis music too retro? :)

Too retro??!!!

I've got a track from Gradius that's all heavy guitar'd up......

Hell, I'll even do Space Invaders if someone does a rockin remix of it....

The only quilifications for a GH chart is a strong guitar lead and an mp3 of the actual song. So if there was an mp3 of a remake of the Fire Shark music, it can be done.

Postman, that looks great so far. This is titled "Item Shop" as it plays when you are choosing items to buy for the level.

Got the final version finished, it's in Guitar Hero now:

I'll probably do "Power UP!" from the Dwelling of Duels next!

What about some Dodonpachi? Also I know it's not a shmup but the F-Zero X OST would probably be cool.

Maybe we can generate a Guitar Hero: Shmups Edition!!!! How hard would that rock!

As for DDP or F-Zero, I'd need to listen to the music again.........some songs just don't fit right with Guitar Hero, it needs to be "chartable".

Postman, that looks awesome dude, nice work. Guitar Hero: Shmups Edition would be sweet haha.

Also, you need a modded PS2 (or disc swap device) to play those discs, right?

Yes, you are generating a new burn of GH2, so a modded set is required.

Anyone can build a note chart in Feedback, but you wouldn't be able to play it, unless you had a modded set, or a ps2-->usb converter to use the guitar controller in Freetar.

Maxconsole is coming out with a memory card mod soon, should make things easier on people.......

You have the mp3 Termina? Send it my way and I'll evaluate it........

I'm not familiar with any Guilty Gear music, don't play much of the series

Guilty Gear has some awesome heavy metal butt-rock tracks. If you delve into that "Still in the Dark" is the awesomest track on the planet.

BTW, I searched and although there is a ARRANGE soundtrack to Fire Shark, I've had no luck finding mp3s. So essentially I give up hope :)
