He did so well in Konami week, I want Turrican to play for one more week at least.

Plus, you can't possibly expect anyone who hasn't touched the game before to master the silly scoring system of RFJ up to a competitive level within a week. Raiden and Viper Phase 1 are the sane choices if you don't want to give RF veterans an unnecessary headstart.

I just tried out VP1 for the first time. I got 99% of enemies on the first two levels, which gives some multiplier of x50 at the end of the stage. After reading this comment, and noticing there's space for an extra digit in the multiplier, I have to ask: does 100% give you x100? If so, this will be one shitty week. Trying to kill every single popcorn enemy in existence with a ship that takes five minutes to go from one side of the screen to the other does not sound like my idea of fun.

Go to the INH website and check out the sample video of their Viper Phase 1 DVD if you want to see 100% be done on stage 1.

Lets not forget the fact that the hitbox in the game is seemingly every pixel of the ship.

Even Raiden 1 and 2 at least had some graze area around the ship.
