I couldn't agree more.
No matter how hard I tried to like the game I just couldn't get over how slow and plodding the pace was.
For the five bucks it goes for nowadays I'd say it's worth it just to look at the graphics, though the platforming's nothing special (though I still preferred it in that sense to Rayman). To anyone who bought it at full price way back in the day, that's another story.

I thought that was Final Fantasy VII.
Haha...you live under a rock, friend? Over-rated- hell yes, of course! I agree with you on that part. Worst game ever? HARDLY. With this being said- I am not fond of rpgs, but I can appreciate a ton of what this game gives. Not neccesarily the fore-runner of more than a few things- but it does bring alot of greatly refined things to the table. What other rpg that year came close to the quality on that game?

end rant-

----
now...on topic.. : P

Does Rolling Thunder count as a platformer? (if it does, does Elevator Action?).

And screw Adventures of little Ralph- that game kicks my ass! (but is a beautiful game!)

I know. I find it quite funny when people think DKC2 is anything but the best 2d platformer ever too :)

Arcade: Bubble Symphony & Memories, Shinobi, Rolling Thunder 2, Shadow Dancer, Osman, Quartet, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Jigoku Meguri, Rainbow Islands, Magic Sword, Bionic Commando, Marchen Maze (with a "Viewpoint" perspective rather than side-view, hopefully this doesn't DQ it)

SMS: Kenseiden, Alex Kidd in Miracle World

Gen/MD: Strider, Gunstar Heroes, The Super Shinobi I & II, Contra Hard Corps, Mega Turrican, Rolling Thunder 3

TG-16/PCE: Bonk 1 & 2, Parasol Stars

SNES: Contra III. Magic Sword near-misses on this system because of the crippling slowdown.

Neo-Geo: Metal Slug series, Magician Lord

PS1: Strider 2

PS2: Quartet (System 16 arcade port, may be only 2 player here but it's great), Contra Shattered Soldier (Screw Neo Contra, play this)
Kinect? KIN NOT.

DCK2 has some gorgeous graphics and tight level design. But when the gameplay is as incredibly simplistic as that of DKC2 (or any DKC game), the overall game is held back a great deal. Really, take away the graphics and you'll see that the gameplay is straight out of the early NES era.

lol..yeah it is...but reading these books and remembering that far back- I could swear DKC had an impact and helped move some SNES's for all get go...prolly why it's remembered as being so great.

DKC2 is my favorite 2D platformer, I haven't played Yoshi's Island yet, but I'm really enjoying DKC2.

DKC was great, but by the time I all cleared DKC2 I was pretty jaded with the series. Haven't played DKC3 to this day. At a friend's maybe once or twice, but I couldn't justify purchasing it.

I won a DKC competition at a local blockbuster. I got two free rentals a month for a year and this glow in the dark plaque thing. I was the only one competing at the store that broke three grand. That was nowhere near the national high though.

None of the DKC games are "best of" anything, except maybe "best Rare games". They were technically impressive and kept the SNES alive with classic style gameplay when polygons hadn't quite hit their stride yet, but people wanted some taste of that next new thing gimmick. But then they had to release two brainless sequels that further accentuated the game's flaws. As for Donkey Kong 64, please shoot me in the face.

How do you guys like Adventure Island? I've been playing the first SNES one, as well as a ton of Bonk's Revenge.

WTF are you niggas on about?

Take away the graphics, you still have fluid controls, secrets(75 bonus barrels, 40 DK coins, Hidden Lost World), and the amazing soundtrack is better than anything Mario has ever cooked up.

Yoshi's Island isnt even all that great. Seriously. It became a chore halfway through.

Oh, and to that guy about DKC importance, I know the original sold 8 million copies so...that might have helped :)

Haven't had time to play it yet but I've read some favorable reviews:

"Noitu Love and the Army of Grinning Darns"

And it's FREE!

http://www.konjak.org/nlove.htm

EDIT: Gave it a try, very nice indeed. unfortunately it's running in a tiny window, so you'll have to change your desktop's resolution. This definitely should have been a console game.

If anyone played the PS2 remake of first one... still remembers the difficulty of final level  that's got to be hardest level in the whole game, if you die at the boss, you begin the hardest level again

except it's not a 2D platformer, but more of a scrolling beat'em up.
Damn overrated too, it was one of the reasons for me to buy a Saturn, but the game wears out very quickly. It's full of slowdowns, it's cheap, unbalanced, repetitive, plays a lot like their older Yu-Yu Hakusho game ....

It's a good game, make no mistake, I would recommend it to anyone, but It's very overrated (Like nearly everything made by Treasure, except Gunstar Heroes which is just fucking amazing even today), and recgonizing this was the 1st step for me to stop with the Treasure Fanboyism.

The game borrows and combines elements from RPGs, action/platformers, fighting, and a beat em up games all in one. I love the story, music, graphics/artwork and above all the gameplay.

Yu Yu Hakusho is my all time favorite Mega Drive game and one of my favorite fighting and multiplayer games. A blast on competitive two versus two matches and totally underrated.

Ok, I agree with that and take back my comment about every Treasure game being overrated.

Their Mega-Drive library is damn impressive.

You might as well ask if there are any 2D platformers AT ALL for the Dreamcast! Now, let's see: there's Bangai-O, which is awesome; Goin' Quackers and Super Magnetic Neo have some 2D-ish areas, but neither is great... oh well, there's NES/SMS/MD emulators, lots of 2D platforming there for sure.

Astal is quite possibly the most overrated/worst game ever.

it's one of my favorite saturn games, love the visuals, music, and gameplay (it's simple granted).
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
