Anybody think of any rare US-released games? I presume they are sticking to CD's.

I try and have sealed copies of games that actually mean something to me. I play my used ones today, but the sealed ones are like homage to their utter coolness or something.PROMETHEUS wrote:I don't understand what's up with collecting unsealed games. I can understand people collecting paintings or whatever, but collecting games ? Just collect game data so you can play them again later.

While thats cool and all Undamned, you still can't "take em with you" when you're gone. (you know what I mean)
I enjoy collecting, but I also enjoy playing even more!!! Everything I have is opened and regularly PLAYED! Don't assume that these games get "worn out"...my discs are still mint. They only get worn out if you mishandle them, which I don't allow that to happen.
I really don't want to get caught up in a discussion such as this, because, in my opinion, those who buy games only to keep them sealed are "hoarders"...not game players. BIG difference!

They also enjoy more business if a retailer orders a reprint (which has the side effect of driving prices on ebay down, commencing tears.)

I'm not collecting sealed games, but I have a handful of sealed ones which I will keep that way. For instance Iron Clad Brikinger. I have a CD-R of the game, so there's no point in opening my sealed copy just so I can play it. Besides, considering it would suddenly be worth 200 USD instead of 500 (just guessing here, no idea what it's really worth) it would be quite idiotic to open it, wouldn't it?
Of course, keeping sealed games around defeats the original purpose, and if you don't care about having them just for the sake of having them (yes, collecting can be an unhealthy habit) my advise would be: Sell the sealed games if they are valuable, buy unsealed ones instead AND make a profit.

Collecting can definitely be unhealthy, and it's usually good to fight the impulse. Further, games are rarely a good investment.
For these reasons I don't buy games that I intend to keep sealed. What happens is that I sometimes buy sealed games that I don't get around to opening-- for the same sorts of reasons as Ceph.
One way that the collector's mentality gets a grip on me is that with my very favorite games I like to have all the various ports, and sometimes limited editions as well. Shiki II is one of my favorites and I love having the various versions of it. I don't want them sealed, though. I like to play them and look at the various inserts etc.
The other case where the collector's mentality has some sway over me is that I'm so close to having a complete and very mint collection of DC shooters. But the one I still need is Chaos Field. Can I really bring myself to plunk down $60 for a lame game I already have for the GC? Here I try hard to resist the collector's impulse, but it's probably only a matter of time before I cave in.

Collecting is a hobby...plain & simple. There's nothing wrong with that. However, I must admit it is rather irritating when titles like Blast Wind are so darn expensive.
But thats life...
I collect, but I play what I collect. I have rare titles like Radiant Silvergun, but I do play it quite a bit. Now there are other titles I've purchased like Chaos Field and Trizeal...these are examples of games that were so-so and I don't play as much...but I still plan to keep them anyway. Its not like I'm being a jerk about it, but I feel like I'm supporting the shmup genre by getting titles like these when they come out (and BTW...and they also look dam nice on my Dreamcast shelf).
Some people collect toy trains and play with them, some collect Hot Wheels....more power to them. I collect shmups and play em'...I don't see why people have a problem with that.

If you are buying games as an investment, PLEASE... stop smoking weed. Games are an awful investment. Do I need to go into why? Sure, one comes along in a short while that you know will be worth at least as much as it does now if not more, but they are few and far between. Even w/ the recent stock market debacle, I've only had my money in funds for about 2.5 years and it's still up. That doesn't happen w/ games.
I do have a few sealed ones though. They're not for investment... mainly b/c the game means something to me. In any case, I will have some way to play any game I have sealed, usually w/ another used copy.

I'm reading your reply here, and now I'm shaking my head. You seem to try to prove me wrong somehow, but how can you prove me wrong based on my opinion based on collecting sealed games verses playing games.
Personally, I think your missing my point of view, and for what its worth...yea, I do own a car. (1968 Cheverolet Chevelle Super Sport) as well as lots of other things.
The difference between me and other people I'm refering to(not Undamned) is that I buy games to collect and PLAY them...not to keep sealed so that one day I can sell em on Ebay and make a so-called "killing".
I also dispise "scalpers" at concerts as well.
Guess what? Its my choice to feel this way...you have your opinion, I have mine.
Oh, and by the way...I'm not forcing some sort of Twitch "World-View" here...I already tried that many years ago regarding Tate vs. widescreen...
The phrase, "To each is own" should be applied here in this thread.

I had to restrain myself from trashing their thread on DP when it went up. I guess that was easy enough to do since I had already made a crazy anti-collecting rant and didn't need to become DP's new kaminoBBH wrote:holy christ, that must be the most buttery forum on the internet

Btw, one reason why non-collectors will never understand (hardcore?) collecting is because to start with they seem to think a collection's value is all monetary. There's a lot more effort and passion that goes into it than can be measured merely with a dollar value.
Okay, this is my last post to this thread :P Try to keep an open mind, people. We all feel that the world revolves around ourselves (and that's normal), but it helps to keep the awareness in the back of our minds at all times that... it really doesn't.

I'm 100% 'player' in theory, probably ~70% 'collector' in practice, but I imagine that's a fairly common situation.
Not that I'd condone such underhandedness, of course, but, regarding these folks who like to drool over sealed copies, what can they realistically do to prevent an enterprising individual with a shrink-wrap machine from ripping them off quite spectacularly? Should probably ask them on their special forum, I guess, but I fear the question might be misinterpreted.
