CPS2 has two separate boards. the 'A' board is more or less the 'motherboard' and contains the jamma connector and a few other things.

The 'B' board is the game data and it attaches to the A board. Both are required to play the game.

CPS2 is encrypted, and the encryption keys are stored on the board, and require a battery to stay active. If the battery dies the keys are lost, and the CPS2 game is dead. Phoenix roms allow the game to work without the encryption keys being present; they bring dead CPS2 boards back from the dead (or allow you to stop worrying about changing the battery)

Moved to Hardware.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
