Make it R-Type Delta and I'm sold.

I'll lol if they use an R-Type stage instead of a random number generator to determine damage and stuff.

@Icarus
As far as I know you can already play R-Type Delta on a PSP with a 1.5 firmware through emulation. I guess the R-Types compilation should also work.
Something like the Metal Slug Complete UMD with all the R-Types (including Leo) would be still cool though :D

That would depend on how good the emulation is. I'd rather have a decent port or 99% emulation quality than some shoddy bugridden attempt at running PS1 games on the PSP, especially for something like the divine R-Type Delta.

I've played Ace Combat and Intelligent Cube on the PSP via the Custom Firmware, and it's 100% accurate. I am almost sure R-Type Delta would look just as nice as it would on a real PS1.

Low res aside, those screens look even better than I'd hoped. For a concept that could easily have passed as one of Irem's annual April Fool website gags (I wouldn't be surprised if it started out that way ;)), those screens have a sense of seriousness to them; which hopefully means RTT will be a real part of the series, not just a quick throwaway project.

In some ways, with this game Irem brings the series one step closer to depicting in-game mass battles of fleets of R-9 derivatives, like Irem hinted at in their FMV intro for R-Type Final.

obviously it isn't going to be a shmup, but some people are thinking/hoping there'll be shmup for some of the gameplay. apparently there won't be
R-Type Tactics
Publisher: Irem
Platform: PSP
Genre: Tactical Simulation
Origin: Japan
Release: Fall 2007

Irem revealed that R-Type Tactics for PSP is not a shooting game, it is a turn based, sci-fi tactical simulation war game. The story takes place in the 22nd Century, you take the space jet "Force" and battle against the alien forces who appear in the galaxy. During the battle you must locate the weakness of the enemies to give them critical blows.

I'm a bit late on this, but I agree with Icarus's earlier statement - this is bull when they just go back on the idea of 'R-Type FINAL,' even if that game was (supposedly) not excellent.

But, whatever...

Amateur translation by me:

If someone could tell me what the hell the really small type in the screenshots say, I'll translate the text and give proper credit. Page 2 coming as soon as I get off my ass to do it.

Sorry guys to rain on the parade- i'm not excited at all- i think its terrible news- as a shmup fan- i'd rather play a new R-type game- with new levels- graphics and gameplay- much the same as Rtype 2 led on from the original.

Instead of the overblown 100+ ships to unlock- i'd rather have 100+ -original style 2d scrolling levels in the same style as the original.
-it'll never happen.

This turn based strategy leaves me really cold- sounds like a pile of nonsence - IREM are trying to sell an old turn based concept (which some people enjoy- tho not me)- and repackage it as something new. -Sounds like complete kack.

I wouldn't be too surprised if eventually some crafty soul grabs the graphics and sounds and puts together a doujin-shmup version of this...

And why is this going to be on the PSP and not the DS? I mean, strategy games SCREAM touch control.

Seems that Irem has been comfortable in Sony's systems since R-Types b y now. And that means lots of releases: Delta, Subrebellion, Final, Zettais, Bumpytrots...

Surely you don't wanna a little developer to risk to split their resources into a variety of platforms, do you?

This was an extreme pain in the ass to translate (just like the first one.) It took me about 6 hours to complete, and some parts sound awkward like hell. Btw, I saw some of the interview when doing it. It looks good but too bad it's not a shmup.

Type "RTYPET" in the textbox and click the button.

Thanks... I miss the required plugin to see the movie, but I'll be more than happy if someone who understands spoken Japanese writes a brief comment here :)

Once again UFO, thanks for taking the trouble and translating the second page. The customization part sounds pretty deep, mixing human tech with bydo parts and all. Seems that people who can get over it that it's not a shmup anymore can look forward to a fresh new chapter of R-Type.
The interview shows some ingame footage, not much though, and a few seconds of what looks like a kickass cutscene.
Hope this sparks some major interest for the R-Type franchise so maybe one day it can return to its shooting roots in some way. Something like Pulstar on the PS3 maybe...

It looks great and while I like and applaud Kujo-san for playing around with the Bydo/R-type theme i fear a strategy game isn't the right type of game to 'popularise' the R-Type universe.

Cheers UFO.

I think it's got pretty good odds of making it over after Advance Wars helped popularize turn-based strategy games on handhelds last generation. Ignoring the R-Type name altogether, a tactical game where you command high-tech starfighters against Geigeresque monstrosities (or vice versa) sounds pretty unique.

Well, most of the R-Type games have found their way out of Japan, hopefully this will end up in North America or Europe. If not, I'll probably still import it, but it would be nice to be able to read everything.

Yes actually. I'm the blind artist that made those screens. Oh and through severe head beatings, I've come to think of shmups as a great platform for strategy games.

You all who hate the psp- will you play this on the new version? (tv-output- among other things). The D-pad might still be crap, though :P
