Hey, there is an idea. A 'buyers guide' section that has a whole bunch of stickies at the top:

psx must-haves
saturn must-haves
dc must-haves

and of course

comparison between psx and saturn ports.

etc. etc.

I did, it pretty much sucks. The only shooter I can recall that has port errors as fundamental as detrimentally flawed controls and no pause. The graphics style is plain but has its own appeal, the soundtrack isn't bad - it's just those flaws combined with the least inspiring gameplay gimmick Takumi has come up with (the hug launcher, which is all about stick wiggling or button mashing, never could figure it out). Since I really like the Giga Wings and Mars Matrix, it was really disappointing.

Thanks for the input. Guess I won't be tracking that one down too hard.

About Night Raid, I think the G-Net cartridge comes up on eBay from time to time for around a hundred bucks, and the G-Net motherboard is around that same price. Doesn't seem to bad since that opens up some other options for you like Psyvariar Medium Unit, Shikigami no shiro, and Raystorm/Raycrisis...

Night Raid's control feels real slippery, which is just stupid in a manic shooter where you need precision. The game isn't the easiest to find but it almost always goes for $40-50 new or mint.
Dodonpachi and Donpachi run without music...
You're right. Both seem to use Redbook and for some reason, Epsxe doesn't seem to handle Redbook audio, or at least not my version. And I'm talking about booting it straight from the real discs. All the sound effects and other format music run fine in Redbook games but unfortunately the Pachis have all their music tracks on Redbook.

Unfortunately, the same seems to be true using a Goldfinger and PS-X-Change. I think I asked this awhile ago but anyone know if the Breaker Pro suffers from the same issue? Theoretically, a boot disc just needs tracks that are set up just right. Some games (using Goldfinger) serve as better boot discs every time.

Anyway, anybody who thinks emulators can substitute the real systems are crazy. Sure, you get nicely rendered visuals (esp. with the 16-bit emulators with their interpolated 2D graphics) but you don't get perfect accuracy and the sound is ALWAYS off. Just compare the 16-bit emulators' emulated sound (even the best of them: Zsnes, Snes9x, Gens, etc.) with the real thing and the difference will be noticeable.

That's why you buy the systems!!! Ganelon is right! PSX emulation sucks anyway, that's why you get a modded PSX or PS2. I once played Final Fantasy VII on the emulator, it's looks better, but it runs a little too fast. Then I try to play Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the emulator, the game runs way too fast and everything is mess up!!!

Okay, you must be doing something wrong. SFA 3 works perfectly for me. never had any trouble. your emulator must not be configured properly.

I have a genesis, and i use the emulator GENS for the graphical enhancements, and trust me, the sound is perfect. not off by any stretch of the imagination. Your settings must be wrong. It sounds fucking awesome going through my setup. I always crank genesis games since they sound so unique, and the emulators sound perfect.

learn to use the stuff before you talk shit about it.

Play sensible soccer in gens...then kega...it isn't perfect.

Nor is Epsxe perfect.

Nor is any emu. MAME crashes sometimes, Magic engine is buggy, etc.

i've yet to find any imperfections in the genesis games I play on Gens.

Epsxe ISN'T perfect but it's very close. And the benefit of playing on my computer and through my stereo with less hassle is enough for me to keep using it. Some games ARE perfect, though. Like SFA3, Final Fantasy Tactics, and some others.

I really don't care for the PSX emulation because I have a PS2 already.

Play more games. Try Shining Force II and try changing Lemon's weapon.

Gens is certainly better than the SNES emulators at sound but it still doesn't sound the same as the real system. It may sound "fucking awesome" but it sure doesn't sound 100% right. If you need proof, go ask at any knowledgeable emu forum and hear what they have to say. Not to mention the Sega CD emulation is even less perfect with different loading speeds (oftentimes longer) and sound quality.

Emulators also suck if you run stuff in the background since it may sap your speed at random times. No worries on the real system. Here's an article discussing the deviation of emulators to the real thing if you wish to be enlightened: http://www.the2d.com/content/view/125/1/

I'm too stubborn to believe you.

Yeah, they slow down if you have stuff going in the background. But why would you want to do that? I have a genesis, I know what it sounds like compared to my emulator. And i'm very picky when it comes to sound. more so than anyone I know. I'd be able to tell the difference.

And I don't want to play shining force II. my friend played through it this year and didn't say anything about any glitches.

I once played Super R-Type on my SNES, when I try out the same game on ZSNES, there is a big difference with the sound!!

you probably didn't change the settings or something. While i'm not a big fan of SNES games, the SNES emulators are probably the most faithful, compatible, and reliable of all.

Well, Lemon is one of the last characters you get and not the most useful either at that time some people might never use him.

Meh, if you feel that the games are perfect enough, more power to you. I just can't shake off the feeling that I'm not playing the exact real game. Any weird graphics glitches and sound blips make me grimace, unsure of whether it was the game itself or less-than-perfect emulation.

I wholeheartedly agree, CMoon!

Since this is a PSX thread asking for good shooters (and platformers and fighters), I'll respond with what I consider the best of the best for the Playstation (PS1 - though I'd probably recommend getting a PS2 nowadays - even though I love my Saturn dearly, I'd say a modded PS2 capable of playing all manners of PS1 and PS2 shooters gives a shmupper the widest variety and quality of shooters of any console - the only contenders would be the potentially dethroned Saturn and the PCE with CD).

Console Exclusives (to my knowledge):
Raiden DX (If you think the PSX can't push sprites like the Saturn, just play this for a few hours)
Gradius Gaiden (possibly the best Gradius in existance)
Toaplan Shooting Battle 1 (you _need_ retro-Toaplan - great stuff!)
Zanac X Zanac (Compile makes a comeback! Legendary 16-bit shooter in a 32-bit package)
Namco Museums (for old-school protoshmups Galaga, Galaxian, Bosconian, Xevious, etc)
Einhander (some love it, I'm on the fence)
G Darius (the biggest and baddest boss battles anywhere... too bad about the slowdown)
Raiden Project (the next best thing to Raiden DX - I'd still recommend it as you get Raiden 1 and 2)
R-Types (good faithful 2 pack of older IREM goodness... R-type 1 and 2)
R-Type Delta (some love it, I'm on the fence)
Harmful Park (hard to get cute-em-up)
RayCrisis (I don't care for it...)

Superior:
Dodonpachi (minor improvements over the Saturn port)
Donpachi (major improvements over the Saturn port)
In The Hunt (minor improvements over the Saturn port)
Raystorm (minor graphical improvements over the Saturn port)
Strikers 1945 (II) (slightly less slowdown in TATE mode, slightly sharper graphics - get the import for TATE mode)

Inferior:
Geki-Oh: Shooting King (get the Saturn port)
Gunbird (get the Saturn port)
Konami Antiques MSX Collection(s) (get the Saturn port)
Soukyugerentai (get the Saturn port)
Thunderforce V Perfect System (less slowdown and bonus material, however, so this is arguable)

About the same:
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Capcom Generations 1: 1942, 1943, 1943 Kai
Capcom Generations 2: Vulgus, Exed Eyes
Image Fight/X-Multiply
Parodius game packs
Salamander Deluxe Pack
Strikers 1945 I (only by rumor... I've never played the PSX version of I)
Twin Bee Deluxe Pack Konami 1995, fairly rare Pack of the original plus the arcade Twinbee Yahoo.
Sonic Wings Special (I've heard the PSX rev is better but I can't tell for sure)

As for other genres you mention... Fighters: skip them onthe PSX and just get Saturn revs. They are vastly superior in all cases that I can think of. Capcom and SNK were well represented on the Saturn. For 2D platformers - the PSX doesn't have a huge selection that I can think of at this time... Rayman is nice (so is the Saturn port), Castlevania SOTN is absolutely required (awesome visuals, sound and music with some fairly old-school Castlevania gameplay). I'm sure others will come to the rescue with good 2D platform games.

Pretty much everything llabnip said, but add the Strider Collection. (contains the original arcade version of Strider, along with Strider 2...not to be confused with that "other" Strider game by US Gold on the Genesis)

[quote="Also any good 2D games I should get
I only want Shooters, Platformers and maybe some Fighters[/quote]

Good 2d Platformers for PSOne:

Rayman
Lomax
Gex 1
Skull Monkeys
Oddworld Odyssey
Oddworld Exodus
Mickey Mouse (conversion from Snes - better on PSX)
Soccer Kid (amiga conversion)
Bubble Bobble 1 & 2 (Rainbow Islands too) - for oldschool maniacs
Castlevania Chronicles
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Earthworm Jim 2 (Is First One Available??)
Heart of Darkness
Hercules
Johnny Bazookatone (for me - it sucks)
Lode Runner - for Lode Runner maniacs
Mortal Kombat Sub-Zero
Strider 2
Tomba 1,2
Pinobee
Unihara Kawase Shun 2nd Edition

Other good 2d games:

Rapid Reload
Metal Slug X
Capcom, Konami, Activision, Williams and more - Collection - for oldschool lovers
Buster Brothers Collection - Pang Collection
Loaded (very good shooter, something like Gauntlet. Beware - sequel Re-Loaded is total shit!!)
Mr Driller
Silhouette Mirage

I've bought PSX two weeks ago (25 euros - from my sister) and I'am very happy with it.

Solid 3d fighters (Tekken 3, Bloody Roar 1,2, Ehhrgeiz, Star Gladiator)
Some very good 2d fighters (Street Fighter Alpha 3, Guilty Gear, King Of Fighter 98, Mortal Kombat Trilogy), a lot of good or average 2d fighters (Darkstalkers, Marvel vs.... X-Men and more)
Good 3D Platformers like Crash 1,2,3, Spyro 1,2,3, Medievil 1,2, Klonoa, Pandemonium ,Pitfall 3D
Very good 3d shooters (Apocalypse, One, Expendable)
Thera are good 2d rpgs and 2d puzzle games on psx.

But i bought PSX for shmups!!!: Look for Xenocide Files or posts above...

If You like 2d games and 2d or 3d shmups - Buy PSX :).

Greetings from Poland (sorry for my english).

I am down with the PSone as a viable game system for any genre.

I have the newer ones, but for the past several months, I have only been interested in the first Sony console. It has taken on a sort of NES-like vibe in my eyes. A powerhouse back in the day that oozes with classic titles. That being said, I do prefer to play these games on a PS2 though.
