Macross Scrambled Valkyrie IMO is probably the best shooter on SFC/SNES with great gameplay, decent difficulty curve and some of the best graphics on the machine.
Just I never hear anyone else mention it so I just thought I'd mention it just in case anyone one was on the look out for a new decent SFC shooter.
Macross is the best one. Second best is probably R-Type III.
And Rob, while Biometal may not be as bad as everyone thinks, it's still flawed (and I don't mean the soundtrack of the US release). We've talked about it before, the main weapon is too weak.

For an old-school memory-heavy shmup it's pretty good, with its nice graphics and weapon variety. Not a personal favorite, but I'll agree that it's one of the best on the system.
The GAM shield is basically the main weapon like the shields in Takumi games. You could clear the game just using that. The laser is pretty strong for additional firepower, though it requires a fair amount of precision. It's not supposed to be played just by traditional shooting.
That said, I vaguely recall seeing replays on YouTube of someone going through the game without using the shield, so apparently it can be done (though I'm not sure why anyone would bother).
Yeah, I linked that a few times. A better idea in theory, really, since my favorite part of the game is the shield. I think you could play only using it, not using it at all or normally. So both the regular shot and GAM are capable enough alone, together is plenty offense.

Nah, you're just a decade late. It was all the rage here back then. I think many folks here are a bit weary of 16-bit era games nowadays, for whatever reason. Scrambled Valkyrie is by far the most fluid Macross shooter, and probably the best anime-based shooter (although Area 88 is like the only real competition).

10 good shmups on the SNES? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh........ It might be better to call it the least worst.
Anyway...on my playthroughs I could never determine just what the hell was going to kill me and what would just damage me. ...I should probably figure that out...

Super Aleste, Pop'n Twinbee, Axelay, R-Type III, Parodius Da!, Gokujou Parodius, Oshaberi Parodius, Area 88, Macross, Super EDF. See, it wasn't that hard.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
