Post by PPA »

Or an era has ended with the Ps2?

Are we going to see new ports of arcade shmups on these so called "next gen" machines?

I mean, besides the Virtual Console /Live etc stuff...

What do you think?

The real era ended right when they stopped coding original stuff, and only arcade ports survived. Well, in truth they never did stop altogether... Just really slowed down. PS2 is at *four* developed-for shmups, iirc.

I hope it's not. I hate the thought of having to buy another console.

The Wii is my rough estimated guess, and partly wishful thinking. Nintendo not being a bitch about 2D gaming is another factor. And since they have the classic controller with a charming SNES layout and a nice d-pad as first party accessory, they are all set. The virtual console makes it a heaven for old-school styled gaming, so I predict the Wii a good future for shmups. Wait, there already IS a shmup in development, something that kinda looked like Sengoku Ace in the screenshots (forgot the name, but we have a thread about that here).

I hope not too. I'm counting on PS2 since DC has stopped producing shmups.

Please, don't make me buy a PS3 just to play that Play-Asia shmup.

haha..$599...I don't think you'll have to worry about "having to buy a ps3 for that game"...but maybe that's just me :) I figure at the bare minimum I'm going to buy it- but not going to expect much.

As far as WII- +1 to that. Cheap system, 'cheap' games, good setup, GC compatable- probably cheaper to develope for...I see possibly good things there : )

Having seen the screenshots, I took the liberty of fixing that for you ;)

I really hope it's better than it looks.

before going into all this shit about "this console is better for shmups than this console" the only main concern for a developer or small publisher is "will we sell enough copies to make it worth while?". and i think that regardless of what machine, in 2007 and onwards, it's just not gonna happen. if super-minted squeenix don't want to release shmups, you can't imagine there's much profit to be had for the small fish.

some people like to romanticise that games are art, but videogames is an industry. it is products that are crafted and sold for commercial revenue. trouble is, is there enough *demand* for new shooters.......?

The shmup genre is already a specialized niche genre...

As it stands, the shmup genre is already a niche genre -- made by fans for the fans -- support the companies that make them and they may very well continue to make them. Without the necessary monetary revenue to continue, then the endless cycle will have been "broken" -- meaning no more shmup titles from said respective company/software developer...so the wise thing is to support your favorite shmup developer with your hard-earned $$$ -- money makes things all possible..... ^_~

The hard-core shmupper already knows about the above info and it's considered "common knowledge" in shmup circles..... ^_~

Just like with Cave's arcade shmup titles not getting a console port ever and the only way to play them is to go to your local Japanese game center (for the lucky fellow shmuppers residing in Japan, that ain't a problem, right?) or buy the actual PCB kits to play on a Japanese arcade cab or Supergun setup is the "only" other alternative. Is it that hard of a decision to make? ^_~

I sure do know very well that the American arcade business scene ain't a rosy picture these days and in the decline, perhaps on a collision course to fade into obscurity just like everything else (compared to the current Japanese arcade business scene -- of course, they are considered two very different markets yet still cater to the VIP clientele, you, the lone independent arcade gamer)...

"The latest and greatest" -- catch phrase that goes hand-in-hand with the arcade business scene best describes what is needed to draw the existing & new customers in the door to try out the latest in current arcade gaming offerings -- plan on spending some serious yen or quarters, of course... ^_~

Guess it's time to "bite the bullet & pay through the nose" when it comes to buying those elusive Cave arcade shmup PCB titles that still haven't gotten a port (and a Mame port is still out of the question for the current Cave SH-3 based arcade shmup PCBs -- give kudos to Cave for their current encryption routines from currently happening with the Mame emu scene -- sure, the current shmup developers have to protect their current arcade PCB IPs for now)..... ^_~

Hopefully all the Turbografix games on the Wii may spark some interest from the corn fed idiots jamming buttons aimlessly like morons on Madden games.

It's kind of a good thing that there were so many shmups on the older 90's consoles. More chances to let the Wiichildren learn what a real game is.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

The days of Mall arcades are dead.

The trend is entertainment centers (Gameworks, etc).

Herd of the new Tekken 6 arcade cabs, $30,000 it cost.

I'll be damned.

They ARE an art. I think there have been enough great examples of artistically inclined games to show that not everyone is after money money money. And personally, if I were designing, I wouldn't care about the monetary value.

Sure, they may be art, but try to tell that to the people paying to make copies of the game. That won't sell your idea. Money makes the world go 'round, whether you like it or not.

lol...fixed for internets. I'll admit the screenshots make me think about "Trevor McFur" for the Atari Jaguar....great eyepopping visuals...sorry gameplay. I'm hoping it will be fixed before release and maybe it'll be worth paying the money for a $600 machine (gulp) that plays:

1. At least one new shmup
2. Backwards compatible all the way back to PS1
3. Blue-Ray disc player
4. So far...no region lockout (according to Play-Asia) which I have a feeling will change when Tekken 6 comes out.

$600...sigh...I can't belive I said that.

A Wii sounds much more reasonable.

Bleh!!!

Just a mention of Trevor McFur OR the Jaguar might be enough to give me nightmares for a week.

That system didnt take too long to bomb, and I cant say I miss it much...

And I would HOPE that someone keeps making games like this for consoles....

What I think they need, though, is something CREATIVE, something that breaks out of the older molds.

Look at Senko no Ronde, which just hit the 360.

I got to try that game at the recent ACen convention. I musta spent 3 hours there..... and during that time, all sorts of other people would walk by, look at it, go "what the heck is that?" and the guy running it would explain it to them. Everyone who walked AWAY from that table, walked away with a desire to buy that game.

As it is now, everyone I know, knows about that game. I've got my gamer friends..... who arent normally shmup fans...... playing this excellent game with me, and wanting more.

Or even look at something like Geometry Wars on the 360's Live Arcade. That's another recent one, that's quite unique, that basically EVERYBODY knows about.

Also, I've found that alot of shmup type games like that, are now starting to appear on services like Live, or maybe the PS3's upcoming whatsit. Cant remember the name.

And on the PC, too.....

Just because they arent in retail stores as much now, dont mean they arent out there :)

A handful of pity purchases of games count for nothing.

But there are things we can and should be doing to help the genre stay alive. Lots of things.
Hopefully all the Turbografix games on the Wii may spark some interest from the corn fed idiots jamming buttons aimlessly like morons on Madden games.
Not a chance. It's going to take quality to get mainstream attention (look at Ikaruga) not 8-bit shovel-ware. Not manics either... IMHO the fate of the genre is mostly in Treasure's hands.

I understand the Trevor McFur part, as that game is prettymuch crap. But I've only met a handful of people who believe the Jag is lousy after having given it a decent chance. Seems most people who blast it haven't even played it, or haven't played it for more than a few minutes.

Well one of those games, in the context of which he speaks, is Treasure. Unfortunately I think the man speaks truth.

Folks have been saying the genre is dead for years but now it's more dead than ever. The closest thing we get to shmups on consoles right now are those arena games like Geometry Wars. No big developer has any plans for a new shmup nor is Cave porting any of their stuff anymore.

Developers will only create games if there is a market for them. If you dont buy the games, there is no market, and hence no games get made. You might feel it's just pity purchasing but if enough supporters buy the games then it creates a market, even if only a small one. Studios are often attracted to small markets as well as large ones since although the potential for super high returns isn't there it can work out a safer bet since there is less competition too. People have to learn that the biggest way they influence the development studios and evolution of the games scene is how they spend their money.

Where the hell did that guff come from? Please explain how it's Sony's fault there is diminishing interest in console ports.

Remember, sony is dissing any 2d game for PS3 even if it's perfect 2d game >> so don't except any 2D hi-res full-fledged release.... it means no cave porting stuff

That is complete rubbish. I dont know where that rumor came from but for some reason the recent popularity of Sony bashing has blinded people to the obvious truth. The ps1, ps2, and psp all have many many ports from the arcades, remakes of classics, and brand new console specific 2d games. In fact the ps2 has got to be the all time best machine for shmup collecting. Why would you possibly think Sony hate 2d? In fact there's already quite a few games either available already or in development for the ps3 which although they use 3d graphics they have 2d gameplay. Obviously it might be a while till the market opens up enough to make it profitable for 2d graphics since the ps3 is new and everyone is wanting to cash in on the wow factor of the new level of graphics which is available. This honeymoon period will eventually end and the market will look appetising for 2d games again.

Instead of looking for scapegoats for the demise of the shmup scene you've really got to look at yourselves first. Ask yourself just how many brand new and not second hand shmups have you bought in the past? If you can count em on one hand you only have yourself to blame.
