i'm a lot like you in this. suck at hori's, and i think i don't actually like them. wait that's not true. i really like some of them, but i don't enjoy playing them much. it's not so much in the gameplay differences, but really in the orientation. somehow in verti's i feel much more attached to the craft, allowing me to play by instinct. like seeing your own feet run, or something. my feet don't run from left to right, at least not from my perspective. in a hori my craft stays a separate thingy on a screen and control remains almost purely cerebral.

eretsua and i played through most of Gradius V a while ago in tate-mode. one of the power-up schemes is symmetrical, and if you use a fully programmable pad (i.e. inc programmable d-pad) it's no problem really. we used his arcade stick and that was somewhat awkward to play on it's side, but doable. i enjoyed the game a whole lot more that way and actually played a lot better.

Same with me, I seem to play better at vert games then hori. For example I can't seem to do well in Progear even though I liked playing it, where as I can do pretty well (for me anyway) in Espgaluda 2 which I've only had for about a week...
I prefer verts and feel like I'm more accomplished at them, but it isn't like I really get much further in either (I always seem to get to level 3 of a shmup then hit a wall (figuratively in verts, literally in horis!)

Eugenics: you know it's right!
But I suck at Treasure shmups. I don't know what they have of different, but RSG, Ikaruga and Gradius V kick my ass so hard.. I can't understand, I see people 1CC Ikaruga or RSG.. I know I am not exactly the best shmup player in the world, but I hardly call myself a crap one (Above average would be my Rank I guess), but for some reason those games are too hard for me. I have trouble clearing the 1st level of RSG still today.
TATE all the way!! Well, not TATE, since I use a standard TV. Anyway I guess not by much. But they tend to be shorter, so less time getting aggrivated in the stages.
I'm a big fan of symmetry. I find vertical patterns far more appealing than horzi patterns. For some reason it's also far easier to dodge patterns coming down than from the right...for me.
Hori's. There pacing is much slower and better for me. Also, hori's have come to be associated with obstacles/walls, which I find most vert's lack. I feel I have a sense of accomplishment when getting through them.
"My taste are for hori shmups. I like having to avoid obstacles."
Bah, I'm the other way around. I hate the feeling of being killed by a still obstacle... a bullet seems honourable, but a wall just sucks At least you won't give the enemies the satisfaction of getting the final blow!
But despite the preference (and therefore my improved performance) for verticals, its really not a concern. I mean, I'll play free moving shmups (uhm... "shmups") as well!
Hori's feel more accomplishing when I finish them. I mean, I didn't 1cc U.N. Squadron, but I had a hell of a fun time beating it on the hardest difficulty... which took me a lotta practice to do. Also like avoiding obstacles, it's a different sense of urgency to avoid a wall.
I maneuver worse in hori's than I do in verticals, it seems. I like a good hori, I like a good vert. Nuff said.

I feel I've got the same mediocre skill in both, generally, but I tend to enjoy horis more and thus push myself harder with them. Like others said, I enjoy the denser level designs they usually offer. Dodging bullets in horis is just easier for me as well, even in uncharacteristically manic ones like Progear.
I'm a huge fan of run and gun action games, play them fairly well and have spent far more time on them than shooters in general, so it's probably an extension of that.
I personally find the 'avoiding obsticles' element present in a lot of horizontal shooters annoying- I'd just rather shoot enemies and dodge bullets rather than worry about crashing into narrow corridors I have to navigate down.
The only horizontal shooters I like are those that lose that altogether (like Sengoku Blade- where the strat guide on that btw?)
I just thought of another reason why I like Horizontal over vertical. The tanks. I don't like the idea of being able to shoot a tank in the middle of the air. In horizontal shmups, you have to get down to their level without crashing to the ground unlike verts where you can instantly destroy them no matter on what altitude you are.

i like vertical shooters because in horizontal shooters you run into things

I'm better at horis, since I like them more and put more time into them. Hell, I don't even need enemy bullets in a game, all I'm after is a huge labyrinth of shifting industrial corridors that you have to inch through with utmost precision. My fave moments in in my fave game (Gradius V) are the bits where you find yourself crammed into an unbelievably tiny space with death on all sides (level 6).
