Gamefaqs Top 10 Shmups Scoring systems list

Post by szycag »

Pretty interesting list, although I don't think the Treasure duo would have topped my own personal list. There's some reference to shmups forum on here too.

Wow, he has a brain. Yeah, Ikaruga wouldn't be the top of my list (too simple). But then again, simple can be good. Personally, Ketsui, Guwange, Galuda 2, and Progear never cease to amaze me. You can understand the scoring system, and still do nowhere close to a "good" score if you don't have a certain amount of finesse. Way more than other Cave games even.

It's a good list, far better than I would have dreamed from Gamefaqs. I would have put Mushi and Galuda 1/2 on there, but I definitely agree with the #1 system, Ikaruga. IMO it is truly the best scoring system ever devised, and the only shmup to have me playing nearly daily for over 2 years.

Oh man look at all those Cave games.

Also this is a scoring mechanics top 10 for anyone who didn't notice.

OT: I was surprised at such a decent Top 10 appearing on GF. It's been a while needless to say.

I actually did one once.

It's a pinball games list for consoles/handheld.

If that InvisibleYogurt guy sees this post for some reason, I wanted to ask him if he's ever played one of the ESP Galuda games. :)

#8: Battle Garegga (SAT)

... Medals drop from enemies, and as long as you keep picking them up as they come without dying or missing one, they'll increase in value up to 200000 points.
FUCKING H4X.
Also, the higher your score, the harder the game gets, and this feature is implemented quite dramatically...
Say what?

Yeah, I like your pinball list a lot. I've never played the Virtual Boy game or the Genesis one, but I'd agree with the rest of the list. I suppose you didn't include Alien Crush because you have Devil's Crush on there. These are my favorites, followed by Kirby's Pinball Land.

The shmup list is a surprise-- odd to see that on a mainstream gaming site, with so many imports mentioned. Glad to see that interest in scoring-based games has not disappeared altogether.

I think he's trying to show off that he's played a few shooters. Ketsui, oh my God! Cannot be comprehended by the poor suckers who can't MAME it!

But if this IllegalYoghurt guy actually sees this thread, the next list might be Top 10 Assholes on Shmups Forum. I wonder if I'll see my handle there.

Honestly, now that I think about it the lack of Border Down on that list is a shame. IMO its scoring system was nuts and completely f'ing awesome. Far better and more complex than anything Cave or Treasure has ever done.

I'm also not getting how Ikaruga has a better scoring system than RS... since Ikaruga basically has the light version of RS's scoring system...
