What is your internet speed/capabilities?

Post by popawell »

After doing a little experementing and examination of my computer, I got this:

Internet:
17-26 KB sec. Dial-Up connection. Using MSN internet provider.
Average page loading speed: (using the shmups.com homepage) 1 Min 23 sec.
Downloading speed: 1-8 KB sec range using Internet Explorer.

I was wondering what everyone else here has? It would help explain why some of us cannot watch movies, or are too lazy to search for something (it takes about 5 minutes to load up most pictures or documents from google at my speed!), myself included of course.

connection: ADSL, far from the CO; can't remember the effective speed cap
page speed: shmups.com homepage without cache (shift-F5): ~7.5 seconds
download speed: depends more on the server and its location than simply my connection. Typically in the 200KBps range.

It would make a lot more sense to have more objective numbers instead of page-loading time estimates.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

I'm getting 1696 kbps down, 427 up.

Just a number of tests I did on my connection about a month ago.

I'm not sure and it's been a long time since I've done tests like mannerbot and Twiddle linked to, but I do know that I have DSL. I also know that my computer can't keep up with my internet, so my internet's speed doesn't really matter.

Up: 1.6Mbps(1.63Mbps,200kByte/s) < -- this can't be right, I've done double this recently w/ a torrent.

Verizon DSL (theoretically 3Mbit down 768k up)
Speed test reports 2530kbps down, 677k up.

If they ever get around to installing it in this apartment complex, Verizon is starting to put FIOS in this area which starts at 15Mb down, and could theoretically go as high as 100Mb.

I'm having some annoying problems with my ADSL connection at the moment. When I switched from a 512k line to the "up to 8Mb" service a couple of months ago, I was getting downstream speeds of 4-5Mbps. Now, even though my router's internal stats are saying that I'm still synchronising at speeds like that, the practical line speed seems to be getting capped somewhere, regardless of the time of day. Last week it was consistently acting like a 512k line on speedtest.net and fast download sites. Early this week it was acting like a 1Mb line, and now it's 1.5Mbps.

I don't think it's a line contention issue, as that would cause the speed to fluctuate up and down throughout the day. I've been rebooting the router every few hours to force it to re-synchronise, and regardless of the various high speeds it says it's getting, practical line performance remains rigidly capped far below it. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Download Speed: 1103 kbps (137.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 85 kbps (10.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

I know the upload speed is bullshit. I get about 1KB/sec upload speed whenever I send a file anywhere.

Too lazy to check the speeds, but it's a T1 fiber-optic connection, and pretty much the absolute best you can have in the US.

God, I'm so glad I've come this far from having 2kB/s download speeds when AOL was my ISP.

If the servers are slow, your connection can't magically make it faster.

The Speedtest servers are pretty much trying to replicate a best case situation. Unfortunately, most times when you're downloading something, you're going to be pretty far removed from anything so much as resembling the best case situation.

Hell, the numbers on my connection are usually only accurate when I'm downloading a well seeded torrent. Otherwise, my average down speed is closer to 700kBps.

If you download from servers your going to get a much higher DL speed. Unfortunately much of world's internet is full of bottle necks which will not cope with 33mb/sec download speeds. Pretty much as soon as the road goes anti fibre optic.

Download managers can help.
Through FTP, Rapidshare, Zippyshare and private Torrent trackers I occasionally get around 7mbyte per second.

My advertised speed is 20 mbit/s up & down, it costs me around 21$ per month. What I get within Moscow (the second server is hosted by my previous employer, btw):

Not bad! Let's see what we get to Europe:

I strongly suspect some of these tests have used compressible data, which is not really representative. But let's take a look at the far targets...

I've got AT&T in the Bay Area. Advertized at 6 MB down, speed tests give 3 MB down, steam downloads top out at ~400 KBps. Sucks that in such a large metropolitan area there's no fios or even fast cable...

edit: LOL didn't notice the spambot. Hilarious.

Did any of you notice that this mad-old thread was resurrected by a spambot? lol

...my cable innertube surfs at 8mbit/s down, 1mbit/s up. It`s pricey, but the alternatives (satellite, wireless) suck, aside from getting a leased line which would be even more $$$
