R-Type Tactics

Post by Himuro »

Just announced for psp. I wasn't too sure if this should even be posted here, because it's not technically a shmup but...

Even though the screens are blurred to hell, the graphics look nicer than Final.

They probably got this idea from the AI mode from final, and the fact that Irem doesn't have any other games people are interested in buying. :P

Is this actually going to be developed by Irem? Because if it is, someone needs to go up to their offices and slap each and every one of their directors for lying to their loyal fans.

"R-Type Not Quite Final Because We Will Be Using The Name To Make A Bit Of Extra Cash When Our Other Projects Aren't Successful, Perhaps By Making A Turn Based Strategy Game, Some Pachinko And Maybe An RPG. And Our Toys Division Is Planning To Release An R-Series Tamagotchi-style Virtual Pet Sometime Soon."

An R-Type style turn based strategy sounds interesting, but it looks like Final's AI Mode with a generic 2D TBS interface bolted on at the moment. Hopefully it'll be halfway decent.

Why didn't we do that before for Square Enix and make Final Fantasy literally final?

In press interviews for R-Type Final, Kazuma Kujo said that R-Type Final would be the last R-Type 2D shooting game, but seemed to avoid questions regarding the future of R-Type or the R-9.

Holy shit! I nearly skipped this thread because I was sure that somebody wants to discuss tactics for the first R-Type or something
Anyway, too bad it seems to be a turnbased strategy game but on the other hand that does sound and look (from what I can tell) MIGHTY interesting. Thanks Himuro for sharing...and well, if you happen to find a better scan please share again :D
Btw, I'm glad that the "Final" thing was somehow a lie...
Edit: Kinda funny that this gets announced right after the Starcraft 2 presentation

This looks absolutely amazing.

So this is what's last week's IGN news about an upcoming "sci-fi strategy game for the PSP" from Irem's Kazuma Kujo was alluding to!

I assume they're using the engine of R-Type Final. If it's really turnbased than this could mean that they're going to crank up the eye candy quite significantly since frame rate issues shouldn't be a big problem now. Oh I can see myself starring at all those sweet biomech designs for hours :D
R-Type Final had a rather slow and ambient flow anyway, imho it's a strangely smart move to to take this slow and tactical gameplay even further. Can't wait for a proper scan! Wooohooo!....excuse my enthusiasm.

However, in the scan I can clearly read "shooting game" in kana.

This sounds like good news to me. I just hope the R-Type team is behind this.

That's kinda how I feel reading this. I didn't hate Final or anything, but to tell your fans that you're never going to do another shmup, and then to exhume the franchise's bloated corpse to put out something no R-Type fan is really interested in, smacks of serious plot-losing. You were going out gracefully and with a huge lump in your throat for a fanbase you'd grown to genuinely admire, remember, Irem?

If it goes ahead, the situation can only be remedied with a proper R-Type prequel.

It's like they're cremating the series in the pits of hell.

No shmup, no purchase from me. R-Type Delta 2, please.

Edit: someone get a clear image of the article. I want to read the gritty details.

Moved to Off Topic.

This isn't the first turn-based tactical game starring the R9. There's also the obscure Shuyaku Sentai Irem Fighter for the Gameboy. R-Type Tactic looks to be an improvement, though, as grid based gameplay should triumph over rock-paper-scissors :)

Still not convinced.

EDIT: Why did I just get the vision of an R-Type/Pokemon crossover there? -_-;;

I love TBS games. But, for some reason, I'd be more excited about this game if it wasn't set in the R-Type universe. I don't know, it just seems kind of silly.

Wild BYDO appeared!

Go, R-9!
[R-9 cry]
R-9 used FORCE POD!
R-9 made a force pod!
The wild BYDO used ORANGE PELLET!
R-9's force pod blocks the attack!
R-9 used RED LASER!!
The wild BYDO fainted!
R-9 gained 1337 exp points!
R-9 grew to level 18!
Huh?
R-9 is evolving!
Congratulations! Your R-9 has evolved into R-9A!!

Hehe, I couldn't resist.

I'm not a big fan of tatics-type games and I don't own a PSP, so meh.

R-Type Tactics Set For PSP
New strategy take on shooting classic.

by IGN Staff

May 23, 2007 - It's the most unexpected genre crossover since Virtua Fighter became an adventure game starring a bunch of punk kids, and it's coming to the PSP. The latest issue of Famitsu has a first look at R-Type Tactics. That's right, the classic shooting franchise has gone the way of the Final Fantasies, and Onimushas before it and is being reborn as a strategy game.

Like Wild Arms, Sony's RPG franchise that's also taking a strategic twist for its first PSP outing, Irem has opted for a hexagonal-based combat system. But the similarities appear to end there.

R-Type Tactics looks like a traditional shooting game, right down to the side-scrolling perspective, only instead of freely moving about and blasting enemy ships, you take turns with the enemy, making careful movements over a grid. Perform an attack, and the game switches to an effect-filled attack sequence.

The side-scrolling perspective isn't all you'll recognize from the series. The game includes similar weapons as well as boss characters who will be instantly recognizable by hardcore fans. The "force" sub-weapons play a big part as well, adding extra power to your ship.

Speaking with the magazine, producer Kazuma Kujo fielded the obvious question: why a strategy game? The answer, according to Kujo, is that the R-Type series came to an end with R-Type Final, so with the new game, Irem wants you to think "This is new." Hopefully this doesn't mean that R-Type shooting games will never return.

This surprising twist on a classic franchise hits the Japanese PSP later this year.
