Playstation over whelmedness

Post by kazamayoshikuni »

new name, not new user.....anywho

For the longest time I avoided getting a PS2 but now since most of the games are cheap I figured what the hell.

I started off my new PS2 collection with RayCrisis and R Type Final (yay for penis bosses!) and if it counts Rez. I'm not sure what's been released domestically and is worth picking up.I do have Gradius/Twinbee/Parodius on PSP so Gradius III and IV I really don't need. So......a little help for somebody way behind on his PS2/PSXness

Hmm Rtype final is ok- i think it gets boring playing the same ol levels (ok they are variations)- but cmon- how many times do you have to pay the bloody game to unlock them all?!

-get Gradius V -its excellent

- also Gradius III + IV -

-kinda struggling now... -have you got a PS1- its much better for shooters -Rtype Delta for the PS1 is better than Final- Gradius Gaiden for the PS1 (chipped or Jap) - is better than both aforementioned Gradius games too.

The PS2 is one of the poorest machines for shooters -its got plenty other games- but very few decent shooters-

-feel free anyone to put me right if you think i'm wrong.

Dreamcast on the other hand is- excellent for shooters

I'm not really into PS2-era shooters, but it has a ton of arcade ports. If you import, that is.

On the domestic front there's not much going on (even then, it's got more than its generational rivals), but if you import, it's one of the best shmupping machines ever, especially if you count the PS1 shmups which can be played on it.

DonPachi, DoDonPachi, and DoDonPachi on the PS2?

Damn, it's going to be hard to beat that.

Interesting at best.

I would hunt down Einhander, the Konami packs (Salamander, Parodius, Gradius), and Gradius Gaiden (wait, you have a PS2 right, damn it won't run correctly).

DON'T waste any money on Philosoma. It's the worst shmup I've ever played. Your ship's hitbox is waaay to large, and the final boss fight isn't even a real boss fight!

AFIK, Taito Legends 2 is out for the US PS2, so pick that up, as it's got a lot of great shmups on it.

Oh come on Dave, let the guy get Philosoma. The ending is one major WTF! :P

One stage runs slowly, but otherwise it works fine: playing on a PS1 is preferable, but I don't think I'd call it a necessity (unlike Toaplan Battle 1, or Night Raid).

Get the Japanese version of Einhander because the English version has no stage select. And Thunder Force V.

A lot of the suggested shooters so far (einhander- thunderforce V etc)- have been PS1 import games- which wont run on a standard pal PS2.

I've not got a jap or chipped PS2 yet -so i'm not up on the scene- but the PAL PS2 was very poor for shooters.

i've got a few chipped PS1s - you can pick them up for peanuts at car boot sales- well worth buying one of them to play the PS1 shooters

So the general consensus has changed to "playstation 2 is the poorest for shooters"

If your importing you have a choice of Konami, Psikyo, Cave, Seibu, Toaplan and many other brands of shooters at your disposal. If you added up every single shooter on the PS1 and PS2, you would come to about 50 titles.

Thats more than any other console I know of.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

My slim PS2 is a NTSC US PS2 :^)

I think the import Einhander is the way to go.....have you seen what the US version goes for?

I think you'll Einhander cheaper on Ebay if you shop around.

-just thought - some will probably disagree on this one- but I found X2 for the PS1 -by Team17 to be a really good shooter.
I eventually managed to complete it - and its one tough shooter at some points.
I own the Pal version and the Japanese Version (released by capcom -i think) -anyway -the Japanese version was actually a better game- slightly easier and better balanced gameplay.

Not sure what you're comparing to, but it hasn't struck me as too bad, at least by comparison with its immediate console peers. The PAL PS2 list on this board is a handy resource you're probably already aware of, but may not be (fear the astonishing continued existence of 50Hz-only ports). 505 Gemestreet's responsible for a fair chunk of the genre's PAL coverage - it's something of a shovelware shop, but seems to devote a decent amount of care to respectable PALification.

On topic, I think Psyvariar Complete's more fun than a barrel of monkeys. I believe grizzled genre veterans are often quite dismissive of it, though, and I don't know whether it got an NTSC US distributor.

Not sure what you mean by "this," so I'll just cover all 3:

Gradius Gaiden: as was said, one stage (either 6 or 7, I forget which) runs much more slowly than normal: the rest of the game is fine.

Toaplan Shooting Battle 1: I don't own it, but apparently it will not play at all on anything except a Japanese PS1 (neither a modded PS1 or a JPS2 will work, IIRC).

Night Raid: Will work on a PS2, but the controls feel loose. Some claim that playing it on a JPS1 improves this, but I haven't tried it myself so I can't comment further.

Sorry should have been clearer..... but thanks for superfast response

I'm getting Gradius Gaiden. One stage runs slower huh? I think I'll cope :)

Thanks again for the informative reply (and belated congrats for 'promotion' to mod status!)

kazamayoshikuni - I recommend Homura - released in Japan & Europe. Should be available cheap. It's good, something a bit different. The Shikigami No Shiro games are well worth checking out too (also cheap)

now I'll get out this thread.

Actually, you dont need to have special PS1 to play PS1 shmups. Don`t forget that PS2 has an option to improve PS1 picture (texture smoothing), I`m using it every time playing any 3D game from PS1. It drastically reduces that "pixel noise" on 3D objects and removes any texture pixellation effects. Of course, there is a tiny side effects... but anyway, using PS2 to play PS1 games is a very good choice for texture smoothing ability alone.

Night Raid works just fine on PS2. G-Darius (PS1) looks better than PS2 version, when using texture smoothing, but contains horrible slowdowns.

kazamayoshikuni, if you have RayCrisis, dont forget to pick up RayStorm, i thinks that RayCrisis is some sort of addon for RayStorm, so go and buy an original!

R Type Delta is must have for any Rtype fan. The original R-Types is very good too.

I don't know how you can say that? Raycrisis is a good game, every r-type game has been good i'll never forget on the first stage battleing it out 360 degrees with a mutant crab, and how in world can say rez is bad the creator is a genious. I am not trying to give you hard time but, i like all these games and have for years. :D

I love to recommend PlayStation games!

Here is my 'must play/own list':

Raiden Project
Raystorm (way better than Series Termination)
R-Type Delta
R-Types (R-Type 1 and 2)
Thunder Force V
G Darius

Japan games:

Zanac X Zanac
Harmful Park
Raiden DX
Gradius Gaiden

Philosoma is not too great for me
Grab Zero Divide for cheap and play Phalanx!
Pass on Mobile Light Force(Gunbird), Gekioh(Shienryu), Shooter Space Shot, Geppy-X

Toaplan SB1 will work fine on a modded PS1, but doesn't like any kind of PS2.

I'm enjoying Raycrisis even though I have no idea why it's game over after the 2nd level boss for me.

R Type final is HARD even on the easy settings.....not border down hard but HARD.
