RQ: Battle Garegga weapon power-up level

I need some enlightenment about this excellent game from the experts here...

Just now I was playing with the super pimped version of the right most plane (I think it's called the "golden bat") and I thought I'd reached the max powerup level of this plane (shooting 4 big golden bullets + options)... all of the sudden I pick up some powerup (I didn't see what I picked up cause I was looking elsewhere) and my ship starts shooting 6 bullets! Whilst grinning maniacally, I also noticed my options started flying around independently of me shooting stuff. Grinning more maniacally, I died.

After trying again a couple of times, I can't seem to reach this powerup level anymore, it just seems to level out at 4 bullets + static options. Can anyone tell me what the conditions are to get to this higher powerup level?

Special Power Up - gained by being at maximum (5th) Shot strength, missing 5 SMALL Shot items, then picking up the next SMALL Shot item to appear

Homing
The Options have full range of the screen, and will fly right up to the nearest enemy and attack. Very useful
To get Homing, miss 5 SMALL Weapon bullets, then pick up an Option item.
