Favorite shmup explosions.
So how about it? A pretty relevant topic considering shmups are all about blowing up stuff (and I just feel like posting something fun), so which of your fave shooters has the most entertaining explosions? It can one, two or as many as you want. My picks:
1.Radiant Silvergun: Big, bright and crisp, the explosions in Radiant are as dramatic as the game and it's soundtrack. In typical Treasure fashion, if it's a midboss or larger enemy they are usually very large and repeat andbosses explode in slow motion for a nice effect.
2.Battle Garegga: Gritty, detailed hand drawn madness, the explosions in Garegga usually spew out a ton of satisfying cloud and ash while spitting out the either much loved or much hated debris which is a trademark of the game. My favorite explosions are after defating the stage 3 factory rolling tank boss (love how the top of the tank blows up in one big, square chunk first then the rest underneath goes) and the biomechanical squid boss at the end of stage 4 (love how the explosions go all over its turret points and hull, boom-boom-boom)
So what's your fave shooter 'splosion/s?

As much as I love Silvergun, the explosions in that one never impressed me much...a lot of them seemed to go "squish" instead of "boom," in my opinion. Ah well.
Cave's already been mentioned, their stuff's certainly never wanting for pyrotechnics (though it seems to me that they sometimes utilize the unfortunate Psikyo-esque technique of recycling explosion graphics...): offhand I also have to say that I like Shienryu's explosions, nice and big and loud. The huge slowdown-laden boss explosions in Ikaruga and Psyvariar 2 are also nice to watch.

Same here! I also love how your ship scrapes the ground on that part, kicking up dust.MovingTarget wrote:but the trucks in Souky's level three do a nice rotating in your face explosion
Yeah I know, minor enemies don't go out in a blaze but bigger ones (like the 3 rows of bigger red fighters you encounter early on) do and of course bosses.BulletMagnet wrote:As much as I love Silvergun, the explosions in that one never impressed me much...a lot of them seemed to go "squish" instead of "boom," in my opinion. Stage 3 is fave level in Souky actually. I love the dramatic, booming music as you descend through the clouds early on. I also love the way the heaviers fighters blow up. EDIT: I even like the evil tank boss with his dual flame throwers. Also, i think it's nifty how the "camera" does a close up on the bosses when they explode.

In truth the boss explosions never impressed me much either...I felt like I was watching some wonky Spirograph pattern spinning around where the boss used to be while a bowl of Rice Krispies got milk poured on it somewhere offscreen. Once again, ah well.Dylan1CC wrote:Yeah I know, minor enemies don't go out in a blaze but bigger ones (like the 3 rows of bigger red fighters you encounter early on) do and of course bosses.

But yeah, to each his own.

Does it look as cool in the Genny cart? Cuz I really need to buy some more Genny shooters (let alone Toaplan games, only Toaplan shmups I have are Batsugan and Kyu Tiger PCE)8 1/2 wrote:This is slightly ot, but the all time greatest bomb is the Truxton skull bomb. I'm starting to like the random explosions that happen when you kill the small enemies in Garegga (From my personal experience, I once dropped several stacks of coins on the ground, and the way the coins spread out after it hits the ground actually reminds me of how the normal enemies explode in Garegga o_O)
Yeah, Garegga is hard to top. I love how the smaller enemies even give off big circular tongues of flame and smoke (same as the 'splosions in IbaraSFKhoa wrote:I'm starting to like the random explosions that happen when you kill the small enemies in Garegga (From my personal experience, I once dropped several stacks of coins on the ground, and the way the coins spread out after it hits the ground actually reminds me of how the normal enemies explode in Garegga o_O)

I love the ones in DoDonPachi, especially the huge ones that roll all the way up the screen, like the exploding building in Stage 2, and the large carrier ships in Stage 3.
The multi-segmented ones in Garegga are also very stylish.
Somehow I also like the ones in Gunstar Heroes, Contra: Hard Corps, and Metal Slug.

Raiden II. Stage 1 boss. Oh hell yes. I love it when huge craters are left by the blasts.
Pretty much all the boss explosions in Sonic Wings 2/3.
Strikers 1945 Plus. GIGA POWER!
DDP and Giga Wing tie for being the loudest.
To whoever said Shienryu, I agree, but if you look closely, everything implodes. Like, instead of the blast animation starting small and forcing outward, it starts large and shrinks. I'm not really complaining, but it's a bit odd.
Edit: Oooh! Oooh! Layer Section! How could I forget? KABOOOOOOOM!

Yes, yes, yes--the Truxton 2 bomb. It is more like Ryu's super fireball and has to be used tactically. It will eat bullets, but only those in its path. Better yet, it will keep drilling through enemies as it ascends. I LOVE that bomb--it needs to show up as a homage in some other game.

Picked up raiden project today, and yea the explosions were nice n bassey
I havnt played much of it yet but its a lot of fun. I love the way the levels are joined together. Maybe they arent all the way through? never got far. Also I love just blasting away, none of that laser crap like in souky(i'm still in love with souky though, as it was my first propa vert shmup, even though it doesnt really seem like a propa vert shmup.....
