Play Magazine gives Red Star a 9.0!...
This game seems a "tad" too easy imo
Compared to this game steel dragon EX was friggin hardcore

Let alone a braindead chimp had to be playing part2

Is it possibly set on 'very easy' or 'monkey'? After Strider's comments about it providing a lot of challenge, I'm a bit confused.Atamosk wrote:This game seems a "tad" too easy imo

The first video is the first boss fight (part of an intro level, really) and the second one is the 2nd or 3rd level... I've gotten as far as the 6th level, and things do heat up a bit. However, the bullets are still moving very slowly. What makes it difficult is that there are normal enemies chasing you around during some boss fights - you need to avoid the bullets and beat up the enemies at the same time, or try to outrun the enemies whilst running through the bullet spray.
Maybe this will heat up further on, but it seems to be mainly the brawling elements that cause problems.
Oh, and there's no 60hz in the PAL version.

I have a slight feeling that this isn't the default difficulty. Otherwise I can assume harder modes are availible which is not big deal anyway.CMoon wrote:Is it possibly set on 'very easy' or 'monkey'? BTW, mannerbot, that is/was a great deal you posted, but Google checkout only allows US addresses. Oh well.

nope wasn't me... not sure how long it is but it's not short, deffinately much longer than cannon spike.I believe Strider77 has said the Xbox version had somewhere around 18 levels, and that's a techincally incomplete game so the PS2 one should have plenty of action.
the game isn't a shooter... it's not all about bullet patters. it's deffinately an action game with heavy shooter elements. the game's shooter elements are not the major challenge but the game is deffinately challenging. at least the version I am playing is. I mean it's by no means going down in my book as one of the huge video game hurdles I've accomplished. It's not a cake walk or push over either though.
I am playing the xbox version as far as I can tell and others that have played it say... it's complete.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I did not get my game today I am told to try again tomorrow(TRU)

Game Stop gets no copies this is 4 stores I try and none of them are know what the hell I am talking about! One store dare ask why I don't reserve and I say you deny me. (I had joke that anytime I went to a Game Stop and they asked me to reserve a game I always said 'Red Star' and I got the shaft).
FUCK

at least my Last Hope came in the post today

I broke down and ordered 2 copies from Amazon. I didn't feel like hunting for it with the current gas prices down here in Southern California. Plus, I didn't have any good leads as to what stores were carrying it, unlike the recently released Brave for the PS2 (nice little game by the way). Plus surprisingly, NCSX didn't advertise it and they are usually very good about carrying limited release US games.
It's grossly ridiculous for specialty stores (EB, Gamestop, Gamecrazy) to not even carry the items they specialize in (with the exception of the rare mom and pop gaming stores).

Wow...it seems not a single store is carrying this. It is starting to look like the remainder of the PS2's life is going to be these titles that don't even show up in the stores.

You'd swear this was developed by Treasure, tons of minibosses with rotating guns, Ikaruga like bullets, innovative bosses.....seriously, I wonder if anyone from Treasure's team "helped out" with this game.....
The game itself is a mixture of Cannon Spike, Final Fight, Radiant Silvergun, Mars Matrix and Ikari Warriors. You have a gun attack and a melee attack, most of the level is melee with troops until the boss, where it turns very shmuppy, as you dodge bullets and weave through laser patterns. You have a quick shield so you can absorb bullets for a short bit, as dodge space gets very limited in some places.
I really like this so far, ps2 owners should check it out. Looks like it has 2-p simultaneous but I haven't messed with that yet......
I found it easy up until about the 6th chapter. Levels are short but there appear to be a lot of them.......

Don't just dodge bullets, dance around them.
I ordered it from Amazon earlier in the week and they cancelled the order. I ended up re-ordering from CDUniverse.Jon wrote:^^^Yeah, it looks like I will be ordering this along with Raiden III of amazon or something to that effect. My local Fry's Electronics didn't even stock these titles and they tend to be pretty reliable when it comes to obscure games.I always try to avoid ordering domestic releases online.
Meh. I'm such a whore for 60hz I'll end up importing the game just for it.ReKleSS wrote:Oh, and there's no 60hz in the PAL version.

OK, my copy showed up and while I've only played it an hour, I'm pretty impressed with it--or rather, it is doing everything a game like this should.
I also fully understand why those early levels are really easy since the controls, while good, are definitely clunkier than a shmup, so precise dodging feels a little harder. Also, the game works on the principle of scaffolding, where an enemy is introduced that isn't hard to beat, then combined with another enemy or challenge, and then another, and on and on until it is creating some really hectic patterns.
All in all I'd say this is great stuff--such a pitty they don't make games like this anymore.

I dunno, RS is considered to be the best shmup out there by many fans of the genre-I don't see Red Star becoming THAT popular.Specineff wrote:I get the feeling this will go Silvergun in a couple years. Limited run, late in the system's life cycle, fun to play. Yup. It's got al the earmarks. Hold on to your copies, guys.
So, are most of the stages from a Neo-Contra-type perspective?

It doesn't have Treasure stamped on it, though.Specineff wrote:I get the feeling this will go Silvergun in a couple years. Limited run, late in the system's life cycle, fun to play. Yup. It's got al the earmarks. Hold on to your copies, guys.

You can add Warning Forever to the games it give "tribute" to, there is an enemy later that keeps upgrading.......
AND
there is a flat out Ikaruga boss fight, I won't spoil it for people, but even the boss name sounds like Ikaruga!!!
This game gets hard in the later levels, I'm on 18.......

Definitely a lot of homages in the game. Really blows away the idea that US arcade style video games have to stink.
How are people doing on the whole upgrade department. I restarted my game and am resetting if I get lower than an A on a level since this seems pretty critical to actually surviving the game.
Also, is anyone having luck with the big guy--who I like but honestly he seems way too clumsy to use effectively.

Only analog, btw, controls are cool - even that lame as me can dodge all bullet )
