Hmmm, thanks Lawfer. Finally something that looks like gameplay shots though I'm a little bit surprised that there's actually not much going on. Too bad, would love to see screens from a bossfight...
Anyway, really nice hud design and title screens :D

I dunno now; something about those shots scream "doujin" (which it technically is, but still...). Very nice in-game res there though.

The guy who posted those screens said that the game is still in development and that we should disregard the inequal quality of the screenshots as it is not what the final product will look like.

But I agree it looks very doujin-like

It looks Naomi-ish to me! Come on Sega, let Dreamcast GD-ROM die with the BANG that is Broken Thunder! Not the whimper that is Karous.

What Dreamcast game has a "Quit" option? It's obviously for PC.

Yeah, looks totally for PC. That is, it should work on everyone's PC except mine. I think it's about time for me to get a new one.

Thank you, Lawfer! :)

Look at that explosion on the far right in the first shot. That looks pretty good. I also really like that illustration of the girl in front of the ships; She looks really nice for some reason, I think it's her eyelashes and cheeks.

Oddly, I think that it's the high resolution that lends the "doujin" feel. I think that the usage of actual screen shots for illustration of the shot types is unusual too, but then, I haven't played the previous games in the series (if this is truly the continuation) so maybe those have that as well. Increased detail (at least in the menu systems) with higher resolution is probably something that most developers would go for, if they knew that they wouldn't have to worry about text being read on a low-resolution screen, for example. It looks different from most that we've seen in the arcades and on consoles, and since it hasn't been ported from (and perhaps won't be ported to) a console, like most doujin shmups, this is the way that it is styled.

The true representation is going to be in the gameplay, of course. I think that it could look like anything (well, almost), but if it plays like Thunder Force, then that's that. I'm looking forward to it.

I just noticed how there is a visible plane as the ground in those in-game screen shots, which extends in a fairly level fashion out to the 2D background image, which then has a higher horizon than the 3D-rendered ground would lead one to believe. Overall, the game looks great, work-in-progress or otherwise. I have a PC, I'd buy it!

I was wondering, though... In other discussions, it was said that shmup developers usually don't want to port their games to the PC platform for piracy reasons. Unless FN&AG are doing it for the love of the game, wouldn't it be prudent for them to work out some sort of arcade or console release, instead of PC? I suppose that sort of thing costs a lot, and that this was the best option for them... I only hope that their work is well-received and supported.

I was going to ask you what you thought made it look like a NAOMI title, but those thin shots do sort of remind me of Psyvariar 2. My first impression was "cool! that's so doujin" like most here, and I still feel that way. Melty Blood showed that games can go from PC to NAOMI, though, so maybe that will happen.

Also, Karous is a great fun. I played it last night, and I think that it's a great sendoff. Under Defeat should have enough "bang" to last a few years, anyway.
JoshF wrote:What Dreamcast game has a "Quit" option? It's obviously for PC.
Actually, Karous has an "Exit" option, if that counts. Exelica might have "Quit," but I'm not sure. I agree with you, though!

Well, yours and mine. I haven't upgraded in years, but now I have one more reason added to the pile. 8)

yeah and they look a hell of alot better than the current "official" releases this year especially for early beta stuff... I'm excited at least.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Right now there are no plans for Broken Thunder to be ported on ANY consoles. I don't think they have confirmed as YES Broken Thunder WILL BE on PC, but well the first sentence speaks for itself...

Yes that illustration looks really good doesn't it? I thought the same thing when I got a closer look at it.

Menus: decent.
In-game graphics: crap.

Everyone always says that, and they never improve/change once it's eventually released.

this looks like crap. I mean, why exactly use such a horridly bland environment? the ship graphics themselves look nice, but after that I'm really not feeling the epic power that the opening video gave us. if you're going to build a game with focus on anime-esque style, you really need to make sure that style and use of frantic action is held throughout.
unless they mde the "level" specifically to show off what little they actually have done, or just show off the ships. whatever, it's definitely not up there from the looks of it.

It's the surface of the moon. We can't expect crystalline towers nor lush-green forests, can we?

actually, yeah, yeah you can. who's to say you can't have a city on the moon? something to make it look a whole lot less drab.

So if the level was just a giant checkerboard, that would be ok, because what else could a checkerboard look like, right?

And it does look like shit even for what it is. Two looping 2D parallax layers and a flat plane for the ground. Come on.

Complete lack of ambition is no excuse. There should at least be some interesting stuff going on in the foreground or something. Everything looks so bare, so simple... It's not very promising, but here's hoping I'm wrong.

I love the amount of trash talking and conjecture on the project as a whole going on from two screenshots

jesus... if it's that awful go play THE or Rajirugi and cream your pants over it but get out of this thread.

I love how folks who never post ONLY post when it's to trash talk.....

Sparse backgrounds didn't seem to do TFV any harm in the popularity stakes:

I think it looks nice enough, let's wait until we see more in game shots before we dismiss this as shit. I'm just pleased to see some evidence that the game is still in development.

Those two screenshots both look a hundred times better than the city level from Thunderforce V on PS1 i can tell you that.

Actually... upon closer inspection they don't look that bad at all. The space in the background is very detailed and peppered with little stars. The surface of the moon could use some work to make it a little less blurred and the ships could use a bit of solidifying but otherwise i think it's pretty cool. Cool hud too...

Now... about that copyright information...
They are using designs and words and ships straight out of Thunderforce. Craw, Syrex, Fire Leo... all that stuff. Aren't they going to have to credit someone at somepoint or something to produce this title? I mean... it is supposed to be sold right?
