 I couldn't imagine not playing with switching shot functions. You really have to take that into account to win big in the game - especially when using the 7 weapon options that you can lock in place to form a defense array.

EDIT - got the other modes added and cleaned up the format for easier reading.

Cool. :) Quick note: I think you missed Coop's 7.2 mil normal score.

Don't know if anyone else tried this or not but I was looking for a spot to rack up points by repeatedly dying and restarting at a checkpoint. It turns out that you can do it indefinitely by collecting the 1up (Randar?) each time.

normal game, hard rank
7,010,430 - all clear - ED-057

grrr... if I had taken a few less hits in area 8 I might have taken first :) for a day or so :)

oh well here are some fun facts:
In area 1 you can build up a full stock (12) of bombs.
Every bomb after 12 gives you 10K points.
In areas 3 and 9 you can use a bomb to take out some otherwise indestructible doodads in the background and get 3 more bombs.
I use power shot for almost the whole game. MDS for area 4.

Regular game

Normal game

6.057.200 -all clear- (1cc)

Lost a life at the penultimate stage 12 boss, grumble. I suppose the 1 million difference between the top players here is due to never wasting a single bomb?

By the way, I used 4 99% of the time.

My strategy was just to destroy everything. Like all the rocks, blocks, spinning triangular prisms, random space trash, the fire-stuff left behind by the enemies on area 4, etc. Sometimes using a bomb will get more points than not using it.

Yeah. I regret not using them until stage 8 (to escape those dreadful debris), especially since I get to the 12 max around stage 1... What a waste.

Edit: In Short stage 4 and Standard stage 1, there's one of those little blue Compile alien guys about half-way through the level. When you pick it up, it powers up your weapon and gives you an extra life. You can pick it up all you want; it's still there if you die and restart the level or continue at the Standard checkpoint. It's an infinite milking opportunity.

Unless you can only pick it up a certain amount of times, the only thing I can think of to remedy this is by having a high score entry requirement that states you must put the amount of lives you earned/had throughout the game, and put how many lives you had when you finally finished. Of course, if someone 1LCs it that should be pretty self-explanatory.

I get the feeling you all know this (at least Coop, anyway), seeing as it's not that hard to notice.

Yeah, I now see the "no checkpoint abuse" notice in the first post. Also, I think this board is dead.

Short / Normal
gs68 - 1,611,460 - ALL

My one worry about the game is that you can infinitely milk points on several of the bosses.

New Scores: (edited)

Short / Normal
MR_Soren - 1,777,030 - All

Short / Hard
MR_Soren - 1,656,370 - All

Short / Hyper
MR_Soren - 1,097,690 - All

Regular / Normal
MR_Soren - 6,373,760 - All

A few notes about Short Game:

It appears that you get 50,000 per ship and 10,000 per bomb at the end, so fewer deaths can make a big impact on your score. If I don't die, I typically finish with 8 lives which is worth a 400,000 bonus. There is also a stage clear bonus of 50,000 for Stage 4.

I wonder if I can get those last 14,670 points to reach first on Short / Normal? :)
