Recommend me shmups like R-Type & X Multiply!

Post by ezcid »

I really like the graphics style of games like R-Type, Xenon & X Multiply - those organic dark alien worlds.

I'm looking for more modern (heh) games with the same feel as those games. A shmup with the gameplay & intensity of Mars Matrix combined with the style of Xenon or R-Type is basically what I'm looking for.

I'm struggling to come up with anything, so I'll take the cheap route, R-Type II on the "R-Types" compilation for PS1...

You might want to try Pulstar for the Neo Geo then if you like your dark and moody hori's. Blazing Star on the Neo Geo is not so dark but it's a wonderful game so I would strongly suggest checking that out to.

Border Down. It has both new and old aspects - memorization like R-Type, intensity of Red Routes. But you'll need a DC.

Last Resort for the Neo-Geo.

The CD version has some really good redbook soundtrack.

Also there's Xexex (play the Japanese version on MAME please).

An awesome dark and stylish shooter is Einhänder on PS1. I think it's the most atmospheric shoot'em up I have played yet. It's graphics still look very good, even if it's on PS1. Also it features an amazing soundtrack and has pretty neat gameplay as well. check it out on youtube or somewhere.

Here's a gameplay movie

If you want a dark, gloomy atmosphere, Gynoug/Wings of Wor is probably right up your alley. Of course, none of these games are really recent...

you might enjoy Cyvern (arc) as it partially has that bio mechanical feel. It's manic, too.

About a year ago I started a thread called "R-type type shmups" and I got some very interesting results. I couldn't find it on a search just now; perhaps someone else can.

Try R-Type Leo if you haven't already. A lot of R-Type fans hate it, but IMO it's the best in the series.

Then there's always the various Thunderforce and Darius games. :D

Thanks, there's some good suggestions in there. I already have the R-Types & Border Down (= great stuff, ofcourse).

I'll see if I can dig up your thread, prof. ganson.

Blazing lazers for Turbo Grafx. Its got a great mixture of environments. Awesome music, great selection of powerups, 9 levels. It feels like your playing a vertical version of Life Force.

Biohazard Battle for Genesis is one of my favorite R-Type clones. Great atmosphere and music.

Rayxanber III (PC-Engine Super CD-ROM2 / Turbo Duo)...quite good.

Rezon (Arcade) ...not terrific but it's an R-Type ripoff

Bio-Ship Paladin :)

even the MegaDrive-Genesis version looked really cool.

space battleship-gomorrah is bio-ship paladin just in case there was some confusion.

sven666: any others you had in mind ?

Don't forget about Irem's own Dragon Breed, it has the R-Type look & feel but with dragons and monsters.

Dragon Breed was one of my favourite games to never get a sequel. I'd even suggest being done in polys would suit it, if they had sufficient detail.

That would be a nice game, but the organic dark feel is kind of old school. So we have to wish for one from some doujin team.

A game not yet mentioned is Salamander 2, not dark but at least with an organic theme.

I haven't played it yet but someone gave me a disc for the ps1 called SHOOTER Space Shot and the screen shots on the back looks like it could be a R-Type style game. And R-Type Final on the ps2 is pretty nice. And what about Gradius V is that close enough to R-Type?

agreed

[EDIT, because I was silly to blab it out. I'll fix my bad habits now.]

I have never played Biohazard Battle, but man it looks sweet as all hell. I might need to pick that one up on Wii VC.

So far, I found PULSTAR and LAST HOPE (on DC) to be the most impressive.

LAST HOPE will definitely keep me busy for a while, it's pretty challenging, and PULSTAR's second stage was just the gfx style & feel I was looking for.

When I'm done with those, I'll check out BIOHAZARD BATTLE, RAYXANBER III and DRAGON BREED ('you gotta have dragons man, you gotta have dragons').
