Just For Fun I ~ Hori Month
Prehistoric Isle in 1930 (1989) ~ SNK
ImageImage

Well it's a bit of an old school finish to what I consider to be a enjoyable experiance. Today is a pre neo-geo SNK shmup experiance by the name of Prehistoric Isle in 1930 and yes it is the sequal to "that" Prehistoric Isle. Anyway due to me being ill (hence why I am writing this now!) so I've only played this just a little bit to know that button 'A' is shoot and button 'B' is change your orbs position. Depending on the orbs position of your plane will change what kind of attack the orb will do. Oh and make sure you shoot the dino eggs to get the power ups and not fly in to them which is the mistake I first made. All in all not a bad finish to the league I'd say.

Rules
* Do not use continues, auto fire, save states, cheats blah blah....
* Use the orignal ship only please (prehisle.zip)
* please use MAME defaults as shown below

Gone in 30 Seconds

Post by DEL »

Time to play this again.

Back when it came out in the arcade, I used to die on the Last Tyrannosaur Boss, and now that I know how to take him down, I can't reach him again :? . Typical.
Anyway, its time to dust this one off.

Edit: By the way, this game wins the prize for most rapid collapse of game. ie. Dying at certain points will see all your planes disappear within 30 seconds.

Yeah, you have like, no firepower wihtout that pod, and whoa lack of speed kills too.

I dunno how I'd even handle inquiry 3, lol.

Yep, and on top of that, you have almost no respawn invincibility time :? .

Totally agree. It's an all or nothing game. Completely unforgiving if you lose your weapon pod, a bit like Side Arms in this respect, but at least you didn't move at a snail's pace in that game.

I still keep getting killed at relatively easy parts of the game too, which is really infuriating.

Ah glad to see some people enjoy the emulators choice. Personaly I think this game is pretty good if a little unfair at times. Anyways I'll try and put a btter score in this weekend once I deal with some my other "commitments" but don;t worry I will update this thread at least once a day! :)

Thanks to everyone who has posted a score so far! :)

Great game. Just a bit frustrating from time to time...
I hope I'll be able to play this some more. Got exams and stuff coming up soon.

Got past the ST5 Stegosaurus, started to descend & got crossfired out. My old strategies are shrouded in the mists of time :? :?: .
That Tyrannosaur needs to die once and for all!
I'll be giving it the odd credit this month.

I will try to play some of this game to make up for the lack of submission last month.

One can only hope that AST-DGN (a.k.a. Raiden Fighters 2) doesn't submit his 78+ million score. ;)

ArrogantBastard - I think you're getting Prehistoric Isles I and 2 mixed up. The Prehistoric Isle I (this one) completion score is around 1.4 to 1.5mil. The 78 mil score is for number 2.

RF2 has completed both games of course.

 I'd rather it was Jck than me on this skanky cheap death game. Those point blank deaths from small pterodactyls circling you and firing into your face really boils my blood. Somehow no matter how experienced you are on this game, those damn birds really stick it to you  .

Damn birds, all I need right now is Birds!

Holy shit, DEL. You've topped us (and Jck, too ;)), and I don't think I can compete with the #1 slot anymore. But that's not going to stop me from trying and submitting my score. ;)

It IS a skank! It annoys the hell out of me, but its a good game at the same time :? .
I tried to squeeze as many points as possible.

ArrogantBastard - Thanks :D ! Jck was stiff competition last night, but I beat him in the end.

General Tips:- Success in this game is totally centred around correct use of the rotating pod.
Inquiry 3 - Have the pod diagonally up left \ for 80% of the stage. Stay low over the water.
Inquiry 4 - *Beginning sections -> its useful to have the pod directly behind you.
*Pod straight down for the Archelon mid Boss.
*The next bit with those option stealing purple jellyfish is the trickiest! -> Have your pod directly above you for this.
*Inquiry 4 Boss -> have pod diagonally up right / , stay below it and dodge upwards when the arms come forward (Not Downwards!!).
Inquiry 5 - Start with / diagonally up right to clear the first wave. Spin it back to \ for the next rear pterodactyl attack, then to straight up or straight down for the Bat attack.
* Straight Forward for the next bit with the fire firers.
*Inquiry 5 Mid Boss -> Pod straight forward and stay back.
*Lava Section - Stay towards the top of the cavern and have your pod Straight down.
*Last True Boss Tyrannosaur  - Arc over his head when he comes forward, look out for his flame from mouth attack as you pass round.
-> 1,000,000 bonus for the CLEAR :o .

Congrats on the score DEL, that's some serious good work.

There is no way I'm going to be able to complete this game without losing my hair; but if I could get over 200,000 I would be very happy with that.

I shall try those tips out on this enjoyable, but skanky game.

Thanks Infintium. I guess you'll need help on Inquiry 3. Here's a more detailed rundown of 3:-
Start with / pod up right. As soon as you get over the water, swivel to pod up left \ and keep it there. Stay low in the middle over the water, destroying the sharks as they jump out. Make sure you keep your pod \ up left to destroy the wall crawlers with the reaching arms as soon as they appear. Switch back to up right / just before the 'Unknown Dinosaur' and keep it there. Stay bottom left of the screen and let your pod / shoot diagonally at the Boss.
After the Unknown Dinosaur, keep pod / up right and fit yourself in the bottom left corner, this will take out all the pterodactyls appearing from behind. Again switch to pod up left \ , destroy the wall crawler appearing from diagonal left (very important!) and switch back round to pod up right / , keep it there until you reach 'Ancient Coleoptra' and swivel pod straight down whilst keeping your plane at the top of the screen. Once the Coleoptra's first form is destroyed, switch to pod forward, stay at the back middle of the screnn and don't move while its drones circle you.
And that's it  .

WOW nice one DEL. I've actualy gotta start playing this game properly. I have not been able to since at the moment I am sharing my room with my sibblings and they tend to hog by pc/consoles/internet a lot.

Cheers for sharing those tips with us as well.
