Not so hot but I actually play them a bit: Twin Cobra and Sky Shark (Flying Shark port). Both have some terrible hit collison.

Recca is my favorite. I have Life Force but never play it. I like Section-Z style games (haha SCAT) but haven't played any in a while...

Recca is my favorite, too.

Gun Nac, Crisis Force and Over Horizon are also great.

If you like Twin Bee, there's a Famicom exclusive, Twinbee 3.

Again, Recca.

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Props to everybody who mentioned Crisis Force. Reminds me of Power Strike II, a little.

Sky Shark I don't get - small scrolling window and collision seems to work against you.

Dragon Spirit would be a choice but you can get it on X68000, so that one's dead to me.

I played this one a lot and it's tough but fun for me for some twisted reason :)

I have never played the X68000 Dragon Spirit. Honestly I like the Turbo Dragon Spirit better than NES but the NES is good for what it is.

Fine reasons. Actually, I have tried Sky Shark a few times despite the ARGHness of random wingtip deaths, and it really is a better game overall than Twin Cobra. I'd rather have the full screen, but the sound is great (woohoo, the composer is one of my favorites from the C=64 era) and the thing doesn't shake or flicker. Nice!

I have Dragon Spirit (and its sequel Dragon Saber) for PCE - I assume there's not much of a difference between Dragon Spirit on X68000 and PCE?

Well, aside from the PCE version looking terrible...actually, I didn't play either version that much. Time to take a looksee at the various versions out there.

I just found something nice. You can directly play all those Famicom games (and games from several other systems) here:

Dear god, more people need to play this. *points at Avatar*

Also, I believe there's a Guardic Gaiden II out there somewhere.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Just for the record, the site I linked to didn't offer any Rom downloads. But yeah, playing games that you don't own is a no-no.

It offered them all for playing though, which still breaks the "No linking to material infringing copyrights"-rule.

And on-topic: Recca.

TGL is amazing and is Compile's absolute masterpiece. But I don't really consider it a pure shooter.

Don't think there's a TGL2 though.

Of course you are right. Being a person who actually BUYS the games I thought of it as a nice try-before-you-buy place and didn't even consider the obvious copyright infringement. Momentary lapse ;)

On topic:
Star Soldier, the father of the caravan games is a Famicom game. However, I prefer the PCE incarnations.

EDIT: The first caravan game is actually Star Force (arcade 1984, Famicom 1985).

See Takahashi Meijin play Star Soldier:

Yes, it doesn't feature auto-fire.

FAMOUS TAKAHASHI ALERT!!!!

Um, I'll be alright. *swoons*

By the way, spent some time with the various Dragon Spirits games, don't have my X68000 EMULATOR set up right now on this computer, nor is my machine working...but anyhow, the NES version is hot. All versions are pretty good, actually. Don't know why I remembered the colors on the PCE version being off (also, I didn't enjoy shooters much in the past, so I would've looked at the title screen and not much else, obviously the most important part).

Abodox, even though it's nearly unplayable towards the end. I just love the atmosphere of the game.

I'm gonna have tomatoes thrown at me for this but it would be so cool if they remade it into a third person 3d run n' gun/exploration type game.

Just imagine something like that on PS3 or 360... you're all alone inside the guts of this huge alien in an awesome looking suit and you have to make your way through all those demonic antibodies and free a swallowed starship carrying an important celestial being. Just one big ass game of seek and destroy with such an intense atmosphere.

I'd totally dig it, especially if it was sort of arcade based where a big goal was to rack up points killing enemies and using special techniques (ala' Shinobi PS2) and learning enemy shot/behavior patterns. It would have to be pretty long lasting though, and have lots of different disgusting areas to explore - and hopefully no big story to bog down the experience.

As much as I love the NES shooters it seems that sometimes you're fighting the controll responsiveness. :x
