Take note, however, that while increased speed and the smaller hitboxes have advantages, they have downsides as well: more speed, obviously, gives you the ability to get places faster but less precision to dodge tight formations. The small hitbox, for its part, makes it easier to dodge stuff, but also makes it tougher to collect items, so be especially aware of that as it relates to medaling.
Code: Select all
In Battle Garegga you get a default selection of 4 main ships and for each ship there are 4 different configurations to suit a players need(the Guest Characters follow suit). Type-A Button, Type-B, Type-C, & Type-ABC(meaning A+B+C buttons pressed simultaneously).
Here is the description of these selections courtesy of Icarus:
A (Shot) = default ship
B (Weapon) = faster speed (about 15-20%)
C (Option) = smaller hitbox
ABC = faster speed and smaller hitbox
Type A input is the default for every ship(assuming you always press A-Button when selecting), and any selections for a given ship will be listed below in the following order:
Silver Sword-Type-A
-Cannon Ball-TypeB
-Masamune-TypeC
-Shatter Star-TypeABC
Grass Hopper
-Reinforcer
-DGR October
-Diving Fox
Flying Baron
-Storm Omen
-Red Impulse
-Black Zeppelin
Wild Snail
-Iron Mackerel
-Rust Champion
-Golden Bat
Now the Guest Characters:
Gain
-Battle Valhalyzer
-Baster Sword
-S. Magic Bomb
Chitta
-Neo-Guidallf
-Magic Fire
-Jinn the Mountain
Miyamoto
-Samurai Dragon
-Ninjyutu Bomb
-Simhuu-Giri
Bornham
-Final Golgdian
-Bat Wave
-Gate of Hell

It's incomplete giving the varying colours of each ship selection/weapon-shot rounds but I figured it's worth noting since as it stands the ST doesn't have it.
I would perhaps add-in the note from BM in addition but, that's upto the ST maintainer so to speak.
EDIT: I just realized Rando's HS thread could be made more compact if it was for a single chart wherein each user specifies the main ship and the config.
So...
Code: Select all
AAA - X XXX XXX - Silver Sword - Type B - Stage 4 - Saturn
BBB - XXX XXX - Gain - Type A - Stage 2 - Mame
CCC - X XXX XXX - Miyamoto - Type ABC - Stage 3 - PCB

One small thing I thought of while playing this earlier today...when it comes to destroying certain boss parts for differing amounts of points, has anyone determined whether Gain's swords and/or Miyamoto's splashy bombs count as "option shots" or "piercing shots" when it comes to determining how many points you get for destroying a boss part? They're sort of both...not a huge deal, but maybe something worth mentioning once the ship breakdown is up.
Speaking of which, would you want any help with that, Icky? I've got a little time off from school.

It can be a big deal if you're playing with Gain. You've got to learn to weaken certain targets and then switch your options to the rear to destroy them with basic shot to get the most points. A few such targets that come to mind right away: 1st boss side propellers, some turrets on 2nd boss, some turrets on 4th boss, main fuselage of the flying platforms on cloud stage . . .BulletMagnet wrote:...not a huge deal, but maybe something worth mentioning once the ship breakdown is up.
2007/1/08 the Japanese player KET updated his Garegga site (http://www.geocities.jp/garelabo/index.html) posting two interesting run (MAME.inp format), one of them featuring Silver Sword!!! And wow, he put also a five star meter that indicates the balance between scoring and survival in the runs! KET it's a preatty cool guy!!!
There are so few SS runs available beside that on the Insanity, so this is really welcome.
To see the replay you shoul'd download the Garemame available on the same site.
For questions about site navigation feel free to ask me on this thread. The navigation is quite simple, but the site is in Japnese. I shoul'd answer your question in about 24/48 hours after you posted them.
Hope you'll enjoy

Yes, I was surprised a bit too, but you have to think that the majority of the players uses the Snail (Mackerel or G. Bat), that has the central piercing shot and the powerful bombs that make the rank go up faster, so they are forced to take few power ups and minimal option amount, usually prefering to powerup only with the big powerup icons, that don't affect the rank too much..
Differently, Silver Sword players (and similar) have less rank increment per frame due to low shot strenght and the two bullets fired at minimum power levels so they are both allowed and forced at the same time to power up themselves.
Or Gain players: they have huge rank increment due to the powerful sword option, but, if they can milk the first boss and the flamingoes properly, they can obtain one or two extends in surplus to exploit in order to manage rank.
God, if someone coul'd say that the game it's not balanced in terms of score/ship, it is perfectly balanced in terms of rank/ship.
Great site!
This site was mentioned by Icarus in his guide on this thread, and I'm here only to announce to people interested into about the latest updates. We have to thank always Icarus, not only for the links, but also for the invaluable material that he meticolously collected and reordered in this wonderful guide, with screens, description and videos; men, this is really the best shmup guide I've ever seen.
Icarus, thank you

Might want to note that KET has removed some tasty replays from his homepage, most notably the NO OPTION ALL and the NO MISS, instead focusing on score-based inputs now. mog-rep.net still holds those two replays however (page linked) - the NO MISS is the replay whose screenshot shows the Iron Mackerel with five Extends left at the ALL (fifth one down), and the NO OPTION ALL with Golden Bat is the one below that.
The most interesting replay fresh up on KET's site is the Bornnam 16.4mil all, higher than WAT's replay on the Saturn version of Garegga.
As usual, you can use KET's personal version of GareggaMAME 0.90.3, found on his homepage, Garegga Laboratory, to run these. You will need the Japanese version ROM of Garegga (battlega) as well as the parent set, as usual.
This Japanese MAME replay site has some Garegga inputs as well, notably a higher scoring Chitta ALL at 15,815,690. I assume it's by KET as well, but haven't checked yet.
I wonder when he'll release his new Chitta record.

What a wonderful Garegga player that KET is, he shows great knowledge of the game besides pure skills... the really impressive thing is that he can clear the game with all the ships, being capable to manage rank in order to play both score balanced runs and survival balanced ones, and then also to express the score/survival balance with a five levels counter!!! He feels the game and controls all of its aspects probably much better than his own body (not that many of us human beings coul'd control it 100% though), but he is also very humble, since the counter never reaches "5" towards score.
I bet Garegga is the only game he played in years...

To the best of my knowledge once you finish the game you unlock pretty much everything...I know that the difficulty level doesn't matter, but I'm not sure if doing it on one credit does. The most important things you unlock are the aforementioned replays and the ability to enable the arcade version's slowdown: there are one or two other things IIRC, but those come most immediately to mind.MovingTarget wrote:I heard somewhere that there are unlockables on the Saturn version of Battle Garegga such as replays. Can anyone clear this up for me? Whats unlockable, requirements etc...

What I did was crank the difficulty down to "training" (yeah, yeah, I know
) and 1CCed it: the scores are kept separated by difficulty level, so it didn't get mixed in with my "arcade" scores, and it also unlocked the slowdown option to make my arcade runs a bit easier, not to mention gave me a bit of practice on some of what to expect later on (and the replays for the full picture). It also unlocks all of the "score attack" stages, another decent bit to help you practice.

When we're on the subject of the Saturn port, what does ED/Edit mean in the HS list? I play on defaults (except having enabled english in the menus, disabled continues and enabled the Guest players option) but still all my scores get ED in the HS list, instead of Arcade which I guess should be standard.
Simply put, because you aren't playing with the overall defaults straight out of the box. If you used the command to unlock the guest characters while keeping everything else default then your score would goto Arcade rather than Edit. I don't see why it should matter anyway, where your top score is placed shouldn't change the outcome.Gakidou wrote:When we're on the subject of the Saturn port, what does ED/Edit mean in the HS list? I was messing around with this today, I kept having to get high scores to see if they appeared as arcade or edit!
Finally came to the conclusion that easy menu mode has to be off, even if every other option is set to that of the arcade settings. Its a bit stupid really. Then when easy menu mode is off you can select the mode and it automatically adjusts the settings.
Bulletmagnet, thanks! I'll give training mode a go
Is arcade slowdown emulation allowed for the highscore tread?

I would assume it is, for the reason MT mentioned...in any case, there's really not a heck of a lot of slowdown anyways, even when it is enabled, though I personally like having it there to tilt things just a bit more in my favor (it certainly doesn't make the game a cake walk to say the least, heh heh).MovingTarget wrote:Is arcade slowdown emulation allowed for the highscore tread?
I think it's only listed in the "Easy Menu" options, as "Wait"...IIRC, unlike most other ports, though, in which putting "Wait" to "On" means that slowdown is enabled, in Garegga you need to turn it to "off" to enable it, for some weird reason.i've never seen the option for the pcb slowdown so i dont think credit feeding unlocks that

When I miss the 1up I look like your avatar.
Having a bit of difficulty with that bit right now, always destroy it either too quickly or not in time.
One thing I realised today about medal collecting and rank. Say you were to accidentally lose a medal just before stage 2 boss, would it be a bad idea to collect weapon'd railway track medals at the start of stage 3? Considering that they will all be sub 500 and its those lower medals that give the most rank increase... I give that example because its one of the places you can get a lot of the same medal.

That's crazy. I've never heard of such a feature before.BulletMagnet wrote:To the best of my knowledge once you finish the game you unlock pretty much everything...I know that the difficulty level doesn't matter, but I'm not sure if doing it on one credit does. Any idea where these replays would be accessed once unlocked?
And is it confirmed that credit feeding to completion can infact unlock all of the above?
