Vasara and Vasara 2

Post by BulletMagnet »

Seeing as I've never started a HS topic before, I figured I'd try my hand at putting the call out to everyone to try these two nifty and rather obscure shmups...I've got 5 slots for the scores now, but if more people than that submit then I'll gladly extend the list.

Everything at defaults, one credit, you know the drill. I've kept separate table for the "Easy" and "Hard" modes in Vasara 2; also, the hidden character in that game (Magoichi) is allowed, the code to get him is below. I've also included the characters' names for your convenience, in case (like me) you have trouble remembering those long names, hopefully I spelled 'em right. Please submit scores in this manner:

Name - Score - Stage Reached - Prestige Kills - Character

As you can see, my scores are extremely dishonorable...slash 'em down! ;)

Edit:Scratch that score, got a better one-

I went by the names listed in the Vasara review here on shmups.com, not sure where the reviewer's source for the names is. I know that the "sword guy's" first name is Yukimura, but I used his last name instead. The gal is only mentioned in the review as a member of an assassin clan called "Saika," so I just used that..."Magoichi" makes sense though, since the fan-wielding guy in Vasara 2 has that same name. No idea what kinda discrepancy exists with the spear guy. For now I'll leave 'em as is, but I'll see what i can find to come up with a more "proper" set of names.

As for your scores, the second one is a bit too inexact to include in that form, I'm afraid...I'll add the first one to the official list as soon as you tell me whether it's for the Easy or Hard game.

Scores updated!

Keep the entries coming: I haven't had a chance to play this for a bit (I've been stuck on Garegga for a bit now), but I'll do my best to keep things current in this thread.

Been having fun with this radically different (to me) shooter. Its a nice breath of fresh air from Garegga... being able to swipe away those bullet patterns at will amuses me greatly :D

Vasara 2, Hard:

Tar-Palantir - 5,851,360 - 5 - 113 - Sandayu

Perfect run until the Stage 4 boss (where I lost 2 lives), then I recovered but died by the purple bullets of the green tank sub-boss.

Keep up the good work! I actually haven't even touched this game or anything at all in MAME for months now, since I've got a lot of console stuff to occupy me for the moment, but don't worry, I'll keep updating, and hopefully get the chance to come back to the Vasaras one of these days. :)

I absolutely love the style/presentation of this game, and thought it was pretty hard. I was about to purchase both PCBs since they are suspiciously cheap everwhere I looked, but decided to first watch some highscoring replays off MARP. Well I'm glad I did this, as the game looks flawed with the charge attack. Clearly you can finish the entire game just using the charge attack, and without firing a single shot! Maybe its just the female character that is mostly unbalanced, but I'm surprised nobody else noticed this (seeing the scores here pretty small compared to the millions you can get by just doing charge attacks).

It looks like the developers recognized this unbalanced gameplay and tried to fix it somewhat by having purple un-blockable bullets in Vasara 2. But its doesn't seem to be enough to me, and not firing a single shot makes this game not much fun IMHO.

Believe me, I've noticed...It just doesn't actually bother me, as I've just accepted it as the way it is...Gigawing with no charging and Psikyo-style gameplay, basically. When I play, I rarely let off shots except for when the screen's a bit crowded with enemies at the top, opting for the charge attack about 95% of the time. I find the real fun to be letting the center of the screen get littered with enemies and letting off a well timed charge, scooping up a nice combo/chain...milking bosses is a bit less fun, though.

Heh, that is true (I think the review of Vasara 1 on this site even mentions that), but I personally find it forgiveable...I mentioned the Vasaras on my past "Non-Shooting Shmups" topic, since "traditional shooting" is more or less discouraged by the scoring system, not to mention the ability to cancel bullets...it's not exactly unique in that respect (Giga Wing 2, the later Cottons, etc.), but I readily acknowledge that its gameplay style isn't for everyone. I still don't mind something a little different from time to time though...speaking of which, I've been considering starting a Psyvariar HS topic, which also appeared on my "non-shooting" list...
