Argh, I enjoyed that silly song during the video, but now, hours later, I can't get it out of my head!!

Well, what else should people do, if not argue about whether or not a game will suck? Wait patiently until its release?

Laugh about it and have a good time, we don't need tight-lipped military-industrial shooters ALL THE TIME.
Aye. We should be thankful that this genre isn't approaching anything near the militaristic meathead homogeneity of the Western FPS (not that I mean to take a cheap dig at that stuff), and we should be encouraging the development of singular, nuanced or just plain silly artistic approaches wherever possible.

On the difficulty, they're bound to include some sort of 'maniac' mode even if it is their attempt at a more leisurely-paced shmup, I reckon... :P

Hrm, looks interesting...very pink sweets inspired it seems. Anyone think that this might be geared toward a younger audience? That would explain the difficulty, happy-go-lucky music, strange character design, etc.. I dunno I just got a strong child-theme when watching the video.

The scoring system looks nice (very Progear-ish) but I rreeeally miss the hand drawn backgrounds and art (Joker Jun style). Hopefully Cave hasn't completely abandoned that way of making shmups but I think the last shooter of theirs to have nice hand drawn art was Galuda II :(

Haha, the character design doesn't look very child friendly to me.

This is looking like it will be pretty fun. Similar presentation to Pink Sweets with lots of on screen text and showing you the portrait of the boss before you fight it etc..

Also looks like it has a raizing style medal system, collecting those small pig heads gives 100, then 200 etc (the players keep dropping them however) I'm guessing it goes up to 10,000 like in that early screenshot with the giant pig heads, and using that super charge attack appears to make enemies release heaps of medals.

Just got back from the show and here are my hands-on impressions:

- The graphics are kick-ass. Lots of stuff animating with all sorts of details. It doesn't look high-res, but it certainly is crisper and more polished than most of their other games.

- It's pretty fun. For all you doubters it is not an easy game. I remember Valgar commenting on Pink Sweets, when that first premiered, saying it had to be cake because of an infinite bomb, but as those who have actually played the game personally will attest, "easy" is not the word. Pork! is no different: if you want points, it's gonna make you sweat. On my first credit I made it most of the way through the 3rd stage with piddly points and it wasn't very hard. On my second try, I was raking in the gold and made more in the first stage than on my entire previous run combined...and I payed the price for my gluttony come stage two.

- How to play: you can refill bombs by picking up chips in the form of little pigs walking around on the ground. Adorable. Use the lard attack to get gold medals which are worth the same as your standard Raizing game, maxing out at 10k, restarting in value when you drop any. The ability to suck them in makes things much easier, but it doesn't always work. The lard meter bar refills when you grab the parachuting piggies that are dropped by enemies.

- The ladies you play as pilot some bizarre norda-trak looking things, so this isn't a Guwange-style, Mercs adventure like some thought it might be.

- The music is good, from what I could hear. Cave boss tracks, as a general rule, are the best in the business, and they win again here. Still, I couldn't make out the stage BGM because of that stupid fucking song that I heard more times today than any sane person should want to.

- In short: it's good fun, more accessible than PS and pleasing to the eyes. The AOU version ended after stage 3 so I didn't get to see beyond that, but I look forward to seeing the final product.

Thanks for the impressions! Did you get a Yagawa-Ikeda feeling from the gameply, or just a Yagawa feeling?

I'm pretty confident this game is going to be a lot of fun. Probably a bit more accessible than Pink Sweets (which I love now, but it tooks hours and hours of play to win me over on that one).

There are plenty of comments from the peanut gallery about how easy this game is (just to pick one line of dicussion), which is ironic coming from folks with no hands-on experience. The line between opinions and reviews is a little blurry in here, it seems. I'm all for pre-game discussion, but these forums are renowned for going way, WAY beyond that.

Kudos to NTSC-J for being the first to bring actual hands-on news and not just speculation. Much appreciated.

And I'm VERY glad to hear the in-game BGM isn't going to make me stab myself in the ear.

A few pics I took:

twe - It felt like Yagawa mostly with the patterns and difficulty style (and the ship types are very reminicent of PS'), but its more of a crowd-pleaser than Ibara or PS for sure.

edit: Forgot to mention the slowdown--holy smokes does this thing grind to a halt whenever you get a bunch of medals, even moreso when they're the shiny 10k ones. It felt like I was going into kakusei mode most of the time.

I just watched the one video, and I'm sure I'll have that damn song looping in my head during work tomorrow. Mu Chi Chi, indeed.

I'm greatly anticipating this game, it looks pretty fun and NTSC-J's thoughts on the game make it sound cool.

This game looks hell of awesome.

Oh, and for those that demand military shooters, take heart: there are pigs wearing army uniforms and slinging machine guns all throughout the game.

If this blurb rings true then methinks I'll almost definitely like this, assuming I ever get to try it: PS, from what I've heard of it, seems to be a step in the right direction for accessibility from Ibara, without losing its appeal to more "hardcore" players, and if this keeps that trend going then I'm all for it. Once again, I'm most interested in how much hard system info, most specifically on the rank, we ever get to see: here's hoping.
