Present - Le Poison Qui Rend Fou

ABBA - Dancing Queen / That's Me :)
The Damned - New Rose / Help
Bowie - Life on Mars / The Man Who Sold the World
Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric / We Are So Fragile

etc. etc. went through dozens (and dozens) of 70s singles this week. Yeah, I'm sick of it now.

Sleep - Dopesmoker
Good choice. As far as tripped out heaviness goes, my penultimate recommendation is Nightstick. All their stuff is out of print now so get it off the interweb or all I'll have to make a cd for you. I got to see them live once a few years ago though they've since fallen apart. They played 3 songs from Blotter and it was totally worth the 6+ hour drive.

London elektricity, live at the scala. The jungle drummer is not as good as he used to be, but fuck he's still fucking amazing. The best, fastest, most skillfull and intense drumming I have ever seen.

Has gotten me back into playing the drums. He plays the kinda stuff I've always tried to play.

Aye, I've got The Key as well, mate. I think Thresholds is my fave, though - if only for Subterranean Infiltrator. :D

Some recent hauls...

Asian:

宇恆 -
Happy Day
梁靜茹 - 親親
何潔 - 發光體
江美琪 - 愛哭鬼

Metal:

Hellchild - Circulating Contradiction
Cellador - Enter Deception

The YuHeng album is OK, though not as good as her original compositions. Jasmine's album took a while to grow on me, but it's a good listen.

Kind of weak voice from HeJie, but the style of songs is a nice change from the usual. Melody is a beauty , and also a more experienced singer. Might change my avatar again...

Cellador's vocals could be a bit better, sounds *slightly* off-key sometimes, and the timing also, but otherwise a good album. The instruments sound great and really together.

Having mixed feelings about Hellchild. Japanese cars, shooters, women, snacks, etc. better than their Western counterparts, so the same must hold for death metal? I can't make out any of the words, but I don't think looking at the booklet will help. Some interesting melodies... as far as death metal goes...

voltage - building the bass castle v.1 (some standard hella-like tracks and then some really nice, more original ones)
die monitr batss - youth controllerz (partially fulfills my need for some noise rock)
faraquet - the whole thing over/call it sane (solid singles)
red house painters - down colorful hill
hella - acoustics (american release, very nice)

just started with:
meshuggah - destroy erase improve
nickel creek - reasons why (progressive bluegrass!?)
so far so good

EDIT: I just realized that Hella are from my hometown, Sacramento. Probably the only major band since Cake (members of which were friends of mine in high school).

Randomly going through my collection, hit the following title:

Lhasa Cement Plant: Chakra Full of Blood

Includes a couple of the key players from Borbetamagus, but that isn't the emphasus here. This is heavy psych improv (for lack of a better term) with emphasis on the heavy. Noisy, nasty, seriously threatening overtones. This is good ill-defined stuff that in general was missed by the 90's post-rock crowd that just wanted pleasant shoe-gazer stuff. Not only a nice reminder that I'm not giving my collection enough love, but more importantly, that the very best stuff continues to sit outside of any genre, and there's still plenty of lost gems out there.

LFO- Sheath

Finally found a copy of this on wax. Very cool designers republic art. "Freak" is a tight-ass single. Many beautiful moments on this record. If any of you like Bijork's Homogenic album check this out!

Nice website that were you can manipulate the images and sounds from the album.

That's a great list, szycag, though I can't understand why anyone would choose Confield when they could have Amber or Tri Repetae.

That's not the one, Didgeridoo was on the Classics album I think. Personally I think Ambient Works II is better, but the original was amazing when it came out.

Chairs missing is arguably a real classic of the post-punk genre (as much or more than anything by Joy Division). Amazing how they go from Pink Flag (which is arguably a real classic the the art-punk genre) to doing a post-punk album without even blinking.

154 is the surprise to me though. This was my first Wire album, and it is their third release. I think at first it seems pretty good, but give it a few more listens and it starts to crumble. Wire was moving way too fast; instead of really filling out the sound thats promised with Chairs missing, we get like 3 or 4 good songs on 154, but an album that's ultimately hollow. I can barely listen to it now.

Yeah, I just put them both there since I'm surprised to be interested at all after Pink Flag (didn't like it). I definitely get the "hollow" complaint. Sometimes it feels like I'm straining to hear something while there's obviously lots of sound. Hollow is the only way to describe it. Not sure why they needed 15-20 tracks an album. "Question of Degree" is what drew me to this pair. Strange song, easily one of the best post-punk songs I somehow missed. (fave post-punk albums: Cut, Beat Rhythm News, Deceit :))

Yeah if you don't like Untilted you wouldn't like Confield. I like old Autechre too (a lot) but their new stuff blows me away, like there's no trace of humanity left in it, I guess that's interesting to me.

Did you guys know Sean Booth and Rob Brown (of ae) are in the special thanks for Metroid Prime? I think I recognized one of the Hafler Trio guys in there too. MP does seem to take some musical cues from Incunabala. I'd take a screen snap of it but I don't have any capture software.

I really can't talk rationally about the first two wire albums (Pink Flag and Chairs Missing)...they are two of my favorite albums from this period, and are hugely influential on a lot of other scenes (of course, I only really give a damn about how it influenced New Zealand lo-fi pop). Not to push someone's nose into something they don't like, but down the road when the mood strikes you, give pink flag another shot. It is indeed a great album.

Deceit is post-punk now? Holy shit! I love post punk :)

CMoon, are there interesting bands in Providence these days that you know about? Did you ever see Arab on Radar (before they disbanded)? They're my favorite noise rock band (by far) and they're from Providence. Just curious what your general impressions of the music scene in that area are.

Listening to:
Sonic Youth - Murray St./Sonic Nurse/Rather Ripped
Oneida - Secret Wars
Deerhoof (various)
Lake of Dracula - Skeletal Remains

After being a huge Pink Floyd and Yes fan for years, I decided to get into more prog rock, and thus picked up the Genesis albums Selling England by the Pound and Foxtrot. They're both great, but SEbtP has shot straight to the top of my current favorites list.

Béla Bartók - 6 String Quartets: Takacs String Quartet -- Image
Manuel Göttsching - Inventions for Electric Guitar -- E2-E4 next, this is so great, especially "Pluralis". Reminds a bit of What Burns Never Returns or Boris' Flood.
Erik Satie - The Piano Works (Ciccolini)
Oval - 94diskont
Carl Craig - More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art -- good shmuppin' music
