Fun Power Strike story

Post by jp »

Alright, so I sit down for some Power Strike right? And I'm cruisin' alone. In level 1 I max out weapon #1 since that APPEARS to be the only way to 1CC the game since all the other weapons (2-8 ) time out. 1 doesn't though, and it can cancel bullets, so its my understanding that you can level up weapon 1 and clear the game in one life.

Now, in Power Strike, if you die, you lose EVERYTHING. Any power-ups for the main shot are GONE! And you're reduced to the lowest level weapon 1, which CANNOT cancel bullets (only maxed out). So as you can imagine, if you die in the later levels, you're finished. You WILL NOT find enough level 1 power-ups to bring yourself back up to par. And your main weapon powers up so slowly you'll probably never get that to the double shot either (it goes up to triple shot, I think it takes 10 or so power-up icons to level it up, maybe more).

So I cruise through level 1. I devastate level 2. Level 3 is no problem. I breeze through level 4. Well, I didn't breeze through level 4. During level 4 my roomate comes in and just starts talking to me... while my eyes are GLUED to the TV. But despite the distraction I continue on, wiping out wave after wave of enemies, canceling bullets left and right.

So I'm playing through level 5 and everything is going fine. And then it happens. A ship flies from off the screen and smashes into me. My little ship explodes into flames and crashes to the ground... and with it, my hopes of a 1CC.

In the split second it takes for the ship to respawn I decide to push on and see how far I can get with my pea shooter since I have racked up 15 lives by this point. If my eyes were glued to the screen before... now they've merged with it!!!!! So I'm dodging like a mad man, weaving between enemy waves and bullets doing all sorts of crazy shit like spiraling at me. Every time I see a weapon, as long as it isn't weapon 2, I snag it. With every base I kill in level 5 I'm PRAYING for the level to end and allow me access to level 6. Finally, I take down a crazy hard base, and the level is over.

Level 6 begins...

Mid-bosses from all the previous levels start fighting me one after another. Only this time, the screen is filling up with enemies AT THE SAME TIME!!! So I'm fighting fairly hard midbosses AND a screen full of enemies at the same time. So I'm weaving in and out of enemy formations and trying to align shots on the midbosses QUICKLY so I can get out of the way of their bullets that I CANNOT cancel out. The Master System is crawling now with the number of bullets and enemies on the screen...

Every chance I get I snag a secondary weapon. And it helps. But one of the midbosses (the one that chases you around the screen and shoots at you) kills me a couple of times. But I persist!!! I take one base out. Level continues. I take another base out. Level continues. I fight another base, it kills me once. I destroy it HOPING its the last one... the level continues.

I manage to snag weapon 8. I wind up against what I'm PRAYING is the final boss, for I suddenly find myself face to face with 25 turrets. Each turret spits out a fountain of bullets at me, but thankfully weapon 8 is canceling the shots! But then it happens... a stray bullet misses the weapon 8 shot and crashes into my ship. I have something like, 4-5 lives left and a pea shooter. And these damn turrets aren't going to let up! Its just a waterfall of red bullets falling towards me.

So I dive in. I weave through the bullets, get up close to a turret, unload, and run away before it fires, all while dodging the shots of the 17 remaining turrets. All the while anytime I can I try my damndest to snag a main shot power up. Eventually, I'm face to face with the last turret, and by now I finally have a twin shot at least. I show it no mercy and finish it off.

Then the floor starts falling apart. I'm like, "YAY! Victory!!!"

And then a mass of eyes pop out of the ground.

Suddenly the screen is filled with blue bullets and these weird round shots that spiral towards you. Before things get too bad I manage to snag a weapon 3. I tear through the center three eyes in no time, leaving a pair of eyes on each side of their remains.

I fly to the left and start working on those eyes, all while trying to shoot down the wave of bullets flying at me from the right. But my level 3 shot is running out of time! I manage to take out the two eyes I'm facing and I snag a weapon 5... which is a horrible horrible homing weapon.

...

I fly over to the last pair of eyes. My main shot is a bit weak, so it isn't doing much for me as far as tearing through the bullets flying at me (as they are destructible). And the homing shot is worthless as I can only fire one slow shot at a time. But somehow I take out one of the eyes (already weak I guess?) and I proceed to unload on the final eye (which is now going NUTS)... praying that my shots can cut through the column of bullets flying out of it... and suddenly...

Image

Its over. My hands hurt like hell. But it was finally over. I fought back the evil plant forces with a pea shooter. Fought my way through level 5 and, for the first time ever, faced level 6, and still came out on top.

Image

Now I just await Power Strike 2. :o :D

Heh, definitely not too shabby for my second evening owning the game though. *Well, I had it as a kid, but it had been... over a decade since I had played it*

Not bad, man. I was able to 1-life it one year ago, with weapon 1, too.

Here's a hint. Weapon 2 will cancel any bullets it catches while you're charging it. As long as you don't release the button, you won't use up a shot. And you can cause MASSIVE damage by touching the mid-bosses with the charging shot, so in theory you can clear each level by only using one shot each, with the exception of the last boss.

I should play it tonight again, and see if I can 1-CC using number 2.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

I think I screamed that at Fur Fighters o_O Awesome game and all, but the exploration and puzzles in that game were more tedious than they should have been. Waaaaaayyy too much wondering around for my tastes. And I love Metroid, so that's saying something.

No shooters have ever really given me the feeling, but the first time I played all the way through Radiant Silvergun definitely had me raising an eyebrow.

Wow, that was a fun story. :D I didn't know how it would end, but in fact, I was guessing that it would be one of those "I was that close" stories, so, I suppose that I was way off on that one.

Congratulations!

It kind of makes me want to try that game now, just from reading your story. It was very well-written, and near the end, I was like, "wow, would I have remembered all of this down to these details?" 8)

Also: That favorite quote tends to be a popular one with me as well, usually translated into "COME ON!" as I tend not to be able to formulate spoken sentences longer than three words while playing.

(I love the "roommate talking while playing" part. Given the tremendous effort required for these games, I'd probably be tempted to set booby traps up, or something. I'm glad that you continued on.)

Haha, thinking of distractions while playing. The run of Ikaruga where I first 1cc'ed it was at work, and the fire alarm went off during the first pattern of the first boss. So I paused, checked everything out, all seemed to be ok. I came back and it was going off again. I couldn't get it to shut up at all. Turns out that the diesel battery that it was plugged into was dying and it wasn't very happy about that. So I had to go through the rest of the boss fight with that annoying fire alarm going on and off (constant would have been less irritating, easier to block out that way). It even got me killed a few times, thankfully I went into that last fight with 3 or so lives in stock.

Congratulations. I 1-lifed the game a couple of times (always using weapon 1), but never was able to recover, when I lost my weapons in level 5 or 6. Nice story.

The best part is, it's SMS, so there's NO PAUSING if someone starts talking to you, etc. Unless you keep your big toe on the pause button, or something.

Wasn't there a pause button on the actual game system unit of the first SMS revision? lol:

Great story/replay jp, intense! :)

Which is where the big toe would've gone :D
Wonderboy III let's you pause by pressing any key on the player 2 controller. I guess this is one of the few (if not the only?) games that has this feature.

Power Strike II lets you use the second button on the controller as the pause button, actually.

very cool Shmup narrative. great descriptions of actually playing a shmup and an old -school one at that. I can picture it perfectly in my head even though I have never played it before.

I reallly need to get a master system and this f-in game

Well thanks guys! Glad you all enjoyed the story. 8)

I was just so hyped that I managed to 1CC it after dying. I didn't think it would happen, and throughout the entirety of level 6 I'm just like, "OK JP, don't get your hopes up, this shit is hard, very very hard, you've never been to level 6 before, its OK." I imagine I would've screamed if I had gotten wiped out. I kinda hate how when you respawn you only have a split second of invincibility. I died two times in a row a few times because of that!

And when those eyeballs popped out of the floor and a wall of blue bullets (some of which were spiraling, oh my God spiraling bullets are evil!) started towards me... yeah, my heart sank. I was just thinking, "I may have 4 lives left... but by God I only have half a minute left with this laser shot, and my main shot is too weak to cut through all that..."

Speaking of Compile love (and unrelated to shmups), I'm LOVING Golvellius. That is such a cool game.

Looking forward to Power Strike II though. Maybe I'll have a cool story for that one too. :o I hear its harder than Power Strike though... and much much longer. 0_0

And Power Strike is already a test of endurance... then again I guess thats what Compile is known for.

I hardly played my copy of Power Strike on the SMS. I spent all my time play Aleste on the MSX. I got to the second to last level without dying but eventually just gave up on it. Too bad I sold it though..

Anyway, Power Strike II may seem a little easy at first but gets INSANELY hard once you get to about the middle of the game. The farthest I could get was halfway through level 5. It seems like every Compile game leads you on to it being easy at first. Almost too easy.

I had a blast replaying the first three levels though. They are really really fun with very very nice graphics, music, and explosions. Just wait till you blow up one of the big ships in the first level  !!

You know what sucks?

I just found out I could've gone on to Level 00. But I didn't.

Looks like I'll be going for a 1LC sometime this weekend. Gotta see the secret level! :D

Not a chance, at least not at default settings. It's true that it's longer, however.

P.S. if you buy Power Strike II but you live in the USA, you'll play the game at abnormal speed. The european version (that is, the only one) was optimized in speed for 50hz.

I just now got around to reading this. That was a freakin' awesome story! Reminds me of hanging with my friend Myles who was always really good about describing the little things in life that make everything worthwhile.

These would make great bedtime stories for shmuppers. That old hillbilly from the cover of Phalanx can sit by our bedsides and describe something like this to us as we lull off.

sms is a sweet console to own.

It's easy to find a us sms, but finding a us sms II is rare it seems. All the ones on ebay are PAL.

I own the original sms, which I'm hoping to mod with svideo, and buy a ram cart for. On the go I play my games on the gp2x, also a great way to play FM enables games.

how do you guys play your sms games?

Isn't the SMS Compile pretty much the same as the MSX2 one but without the first stage and the intro (I haven't played enough to see if the first stage from the MSX2 version is shuffled off to later in the game)?

Nice story...

On my original model sms in the late 80s I used to prefer playing R-Type with a third-party infrared wireless arcade stick that used loud microswitches (don't remember the model, and Google doesn't seem to bring up any results). I could not 1CC the game using the stock sms gamepads, only with the joystick's precision.

These days, for modern big screen play I like using a saturn virtua stick HSS-0136 connected to a modded Xbox running sms emulated. And more recently, I enjoy the experience of portable sms emulation on the PSP's great screen, with a japanese PSP Capcom d-pad attachment to make it control better and look and feel more like a classic sms joypad.

Nice read! So Power Strike II didn't pose much of a problem, eh? I suppose that hardest part was finding a copy ;)

Kingbuzzo wrote:how do you guys play your sms games?
With my Mega Drive, using a Master System converter. That way I can use a 6-button MD pad, RGB and toggle between 50/60hz (my MD is modified).

Only got a handful of Master System games, though.

Oookay, this is completely Off Topic I guess, but,

what happened to Shatterhand? He hasn't posted in a while, and I'm surprised he doesn't comment on Compile goodness!

If you hear me man, I hope everything is all right with you!
