Lightning Volta
wtf unplayable
That's what I thought at first, until I hit enter after loading it. I was stuck on the title screen for like... 10 seconds lol. Then I played it, and wtf there's practically no dodging involved. Everything is like lol safe spot. Pure memorization I tell ya.
I knew there was something fishy when 99% of the level 1 bullets went straight down.
Seriously the whole point of playing shmups is dodging, and wtf the patterns were either utterly pathetic or impossible to dodge w/o safe spots (safe spots which made them utterly pathetic).
It's like nobody bothered to playtest it.
Oh and did I mention there's no aimed bullets?
Major source of wtf.
Aimed barrages are like... the essence of shmupping.
edit: lol grammar check

There was a game I played on my friends modded xbox. Homebrew. Explained as "Classic Arcade Vertical Shooting". My friend hadn't played it yet so I booted it up and tried it.
I beat the game with 45 extends.
On the second loop (which is identical to the first) I got to the 4th stage (of 5) without pressing a single button except the fire button.
Horribly unplayable. It was ridiculous. You even had a health bar. You could take 3 or 4 hits with a full healthbar and you could get powerups to refill the bar. Powerups rained down upon me. Extends were dropped every 15 seconds.
Too bad I can't remember the name of it. It was the worst game I have ever played. I almost cried a little.

This topic reminds me of another shmup called Asuka & Asuka. There are hardly any aimed bullets in the game, most of the enemies just shoot in a pre-determined direction. And some enemies will shoot at you even though they are off screen. And the boss fights are boring as hell.

Last time I played A&A it was only for a few minutes; not long enough to appreciate how terrible it is. I had even forgotten about the shots that don't hit the top of the screen (always an alarm in shooters, I think, even if it's an attempt to model reality it's a poor shooter feature). Also, this horrible noise came from my headphones whenever I shot; oddly the sound is for a continuous-fire gun, but you can fire faster by tapping.
This time I still played for just a few, but kept getting smacked by ships.
I would rather play Arbalester, honest (and actually I just did, 405K...boring as hell and the worst powerup progression ever, but still better than A&A seems to be).

Yeah, the firing sfx for A&A are terrible. And, yes, the default gun has limited range. What the hell? The first time I played it, it was only for a few minutes. But then, I played it again just to credit feed and see if maybe there were some cool levels or bosses. But nothing redeems it. And the 2nd level with the dinos firing at you from the ground reminded me of Dragon Spirit. lol
