Konami's phenomenal side-scrolling space shoot-'em-up series blew away fans of the genre with the phenomenal Treasure-developed Gradius V, and one can only imagine what the Vic Viper will look like on a next-gen platform. Unfortunately, this one may never see the light of day - 1UP has been told by a source close to Konami that the game is on "indefinite hold".

This major site affiliated with EGM magazine, claims that development on Gradius VI for PS3 is no longer going ahead...

I wonder if it's at all related to the PS3 being delayed (and how many times more will that happen?)

That would be my guess, because rumor has it that Sony is rethinking the BR technology, and if they remove that from PS3's, then any dev. kits that have already been sent out, to companies like Konami, would be pretty useless. And Konami may have had plans to make the game a BR game, which would be pretty mute if these rumors are true.bloodflowers wrote:I wonder if it's at all related to the PS3 being delayed (and how many times more will that happen?)

I would be more inclined to want to get something if it were on the Revolution...imagine playing a shmup on one of those controllers...
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Not good news but they are probably just putting it on the backburner untilt hey can either find an outside dev to make it or devote enough in house resources to the game. 2D has never been a priority for Konami with the next gen consoles so this is no surprise (trying to turn off silly "Sony conspiracy!" thoughts

That's probably closer to being right.OneEyedJack wrote:It is prolly on indefinite hold until the PS3 numbers are up to snuff. Gradius, however beloved is not beloved in huge-big numbers. Could be a wait and see until fall 2007 deal.
Konami could be merely hedging their bets. I expect it'll come out , just under better market conditions.
They figured if they can't get in done in time for the "it's a launch game, people will buy anything" rush, they'll put it on hold until the numbers are better.
I guarantee you that we'll see a Gradius 6 at some point, and probably on the PS3.

I don't blame them. $ony keeps pushing the PS3 back, and from what I've heard, the devkits cost a fortune. Have they even sent those out yet? :/Thunder Force wrote:This major site affiliated with EGM magazine, claims that development on Gradius VI for PS3 is no longer going ahead...

I've heard $ony Cambridge have a few. Makes little sense though seeing as the specs appear to change every other week.

My worry is $ony pushing back the release of the development kit and induse chaos the development schdule of Konami.Zweihander wrote:I don't blame them. $ony keeps pushing the PS3 back, and from what I've heard, the devkits cost a fortune. Have they even sent those out yet? :/
The worast case is the development team orginally planed to develop the next Gradius game become unavaliable due to the delay of the PS3 development kit...
i.e. PS3 development kit is not avaliable on schedule and the planed development team is assigned another project.

I would welcome any port of that game-it came out in 1997, and there's simply no good reason for the lack of even a PS1 port.captain ahar wrote:maybe they'll do a next gen port of Solar Assault...Dylan1CC wrote:2D has never been a priority for Konami with the next gen consoles so this is no surprise (trying to turn off silly "Sony conspiracy!" thoughts)
But yeah, considering that the PS3 won't launch until November, I doubt we'll see Gradius VI this year-unless Konami has any of it complete by E3, or the TGS.
Note to Konami-PLEASE no more loads of repeat bosses.

Looks like the cancellation is finally official.
Oh well, unless Treasure was going to work on it again this might not be such a bad thing (unless KCEJ could somehow capture the magic of Gaiden once more).

I guess that's business for ya with the next gen. Assuming the cause really was PS3 development spending, it was no doubt hard for Konami to justify the additional cost of a "lower tier" title when the system it's on is generating huge production expenses for their better selling games.by IGN Staff
January 10, 2007 - Konami's support for both the PS3 and Wii appears to have taken a major hit. The release list in the latest issue of Famitsu reveals reveals that a number of next generation titles previously announced by the company are no longer in development.
Here's the full list of cancelled titles.
Gradius Series (PS3)
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (PS3)
New Action Game (PS3)
New Role Playing Game (PS3)
New Action Adventure Game 2 (Wii)
Role Playing Game (Wii)

That's really a sad news for me, along with Einhander, Gradius was my favorite HorizontalDylan1CC wrote:http://wii.ign.com/articles/754/754308p1.html

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Those bastards!
etc
Do you chaps think this has a lot to do with the difficulty of PS3 development and the costs (or, rather, justifying putting the time/money into a franchise that now sells pretty slowly and steadily)? Could Sony be on another "pah, 2D on THIS machine?" kick?
And damn, I'd pre-ordered New Action Adventure Game 2.
