Just For Fun I ~ Vert Month
Fighter and Attacker ~ Namco 1992
(Also known as F/A in Japan)

ImageImageImage

GET DOWN EVERYBODY!**
Fighter and Attcker by Namco is a very nice vertical Shmup with two fire buttons made by Namco contains 16 playable fighter jets each having different attack styles. Each plane has a "Attack Air" and "Attack Ground" attacks which are activated by pressing one of the two fire buttons. Other things I should mention is that there is no screen clearing bomb and that each plane has three pieces of amour and once all those hit points are gone it's game over. Fighter and Attacker also has very good presentation and the music/sound is fantastic even though MAME has a little trouble emulating the sound it's nothing to really worry about since it's still very enjoyable to listen to and does not effect game play. Overall it appears that thanks to MAME32's random select feature I've stumbled upon another gem... I hope you guys like it to if you've not played this yet!

[Additional Rules]
(please follow the rules state on the main thread found here!)
*Please use the original rom and not any of the clones (fghtatck.zip)
*Use one credit
*Do not use Auto Fire controllers/emu functions etc. If you are that way inclined please do use the game's "auto" class fighter jet (bottom of the Jet select screen) which comes with auto fire!
*Please use MAME defaults which are shown on the picture posted below...

How do we submit scores? Just post them here or is there another format?

OK here is my new high score which is terrable. Am I still recovering from the night before but I'm not making excuses because I'm not all that hot at Shmups anyway lol.

Danny - 69,000 - F4 - 1

I will say this in my defense though I am still expermenting which plane suits my style the most. So far it's the defualt american "semi auto" aircraft because I find it's heavy duty bombs to work wonders agasint large groups of ground enemies which is were I seem to be having the most trouble with so far, speicaly on that bloody aircraft carrier.

Nothing like good ol' zigzagging to take care of old school stuff.

I need to find me a way to handle those level 2 ships though. I hate huge hit boxes.

Cheers for all your posts guys!

Although I hate to be picky about this guys but you do need to send us those pics of your high scores just incase there is an issue. Since you guys are honest Joe's it's not a problem but for future refrance you can take pictures by pressing the F12 key which sends the pic to your mame's 'snap' folder. After that you can go to imageshack and host the file for free, it's really simple to use so please make good use of it!

So with that said thanks for entering, I am going to try and at least not come last in this league but it's looking likely at the moment heh. :)

OK updated!

Just as a pointer I find at the moment it's easier to use aircrafts with homing missles to take out annoying oversized aircraft harriers which we shall not name. Although saying that I also like using the rapid fire vulcan cannon to take out normal ground enemies. I guess life is full of choices...

Speaking of choices it's nice to see everybody is using differnt planes so far. I guess it's because while there are differnt planes they are just differnt combonations of all the game's Air/Ground weapons which are fairly balanced.

I think more experimentation is needed! ;)

I just use the autofire plane now.

Got level 2 figured out (stayed in middle and pointblanked left wing of first rotary vulcan plane). Now to find a way to get through 3 without taking any hits from the mass helis.

I like this shmup - great find, danny! I'm sticking with the 117 as well, as the others just get too tiring on the fingers.

Well I'll prolly switch to a 6 way plane, since I'm tired of being pwned by popcorn enemies.

Danny - 83,700 - IDS - 1 (pic)

Bloody typical! After spending most of the day doing some Januray sales shopping I finaly managed to totaly destroy the carrier but I was ambushed by a swarm of helicopters and was hit by a quick bullet. Ah well at least I am not last now although I'm not sure how long that feeling will last for... :)

Hey AB nice to see you, to see you... NICE!

Seriously though (with all lame quizshow catphrases aside!) man you know how to make an entrance, I was starting to wonder when you would post a score and humilate me yet again! ;)

Hi guys here is another score update by me...

Image
Danny - 182,600 - IDS - 2

About my picture, Friday was my brithday and my friend had seven old pc monitors kick around his flat so you can kinda guess what happened next...

"Happy Birthday Dan take a monitor... no seriously!"

Anyway I am now enjoying the wonders of have a perminatly TATE'd monitor but now I need the PC monitor equivalent of a scart/RGB multi box so I don't have to keep unpluging the monitor from the back of my PC everytime I want to play this game lol (nothing to fancy just one that allows me to switch which monitor I am using, don't care if they can both be on at the same time lol). I can see what people mean by TATE makes things easier though, you can see everything much more clearly so it definatly helps.

Not a bad little shooter. The carrier is a pain, as are those bombers in Rnd. 2.

Arrived late in the game so I shall have to get practicing. :)

The bombers often did me in, but there is a trick to the carrier - clear the screen as fast as possible and rush to the top of the screen and bomb those gun emplacements as soon as possible. The carrier's elevators can be gotten rid of as well, although you might want to leave them be for a while so you can rack up a few more points.

Just fly above the firing arcs of the rotating vulcans for the bombers.
