What is most important 1cc or high score?
I have seen some topics regarding high scores and 1cc's and the use of credits so on and so forth. I have found out more about my playing style and level of satisfaction through these discussions and found that I am more satisfied with 1cc's and getting far in a game rather than playing for a high score.
What is paramount for you?

I voted for score... but in all honesty, this topic has been brought up again and again, and all I can really say is that depends on the game. For me, high score is a much better indicator of progress. A 1cc is also pretty tough to achieve in many modern games. And many modern games have a strong focus on score.

You start with 1CC
Then, when you really like a game, you can try highscore. But in all honesty, unless you get a perfect score, highscores don't mean shit. Because there's always someone who's gonna do better than you. And also because unless your highscore is perfect, you aren't trying hard enough. Pesronally I don't think I'd ever be able to get a (near) perfect highscore.

Nearly all shmups give you extends if you score a lot, which in turn makes them easier to 1cc. For instance, the only game I 1cced so far (besides Bakraid in Easy mode
) is Ikaruga, and even though I sucked at chaining, I tried at least in some places since I baldy needed the extends.
And as for the "there is always someone better than you", then why should anybody bother to learn skateboarding, playing guitar, or paint, when they approach it with a mindstate like "Why bother even trying if I know I can´t best the best skateboarder/guitarist/painter in the world anyways"?
I usually don´t compare my own score with others too much since I haven´t enough skill since I play for maybe 2 years. But it´s an indicator for MYSELF; similar to other activities that you want to get better in. If I really wanted to 1cc any game I play before I start bothering with score I would have to spend years and years to 1cc DDP or Batrider Advance.
Besides, it´s not like playing for score INCLUDES trying to survive as long as possible anyways.

wish i could play for 1CC but i cant.. i tell myself, "fuck the score, just survive" every now and then but still find myself taking a laser up the ass while grinding the hairy balls on stage 2 (guess which game
).
its the same with every shmup i play... so score only for me..

I'd rather 1cc a game. I feel more accomplished when I get to a new stage rather than just getting x more points than before. Either one can be fun. I play for score or completion depending on how I feel, so I do like playing for both.

lol, "trying your best" and getting fun (oops) out of the process is key.Iluvretro wrote:But in all honesty, unless you get a perfect score, highscores don't mean shit. A freind of mine who've I've played shmups with(Who doesn't bomb constantly) says that the funnest part for him is dodging hard patterns every once and awhile and enjoying the acomplishment of surviving and breathing a sigh of relief. He also says that I'm wussing out when I use bombs.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.

I don't know where this quote came from, but I'll comment anyways ;PIluvretro wrote:But in all honesty, unless you get a perfect score, highscores don't mean shit. It's not like you have to compete against the entire world. Compete with friends or simply try to best your own score. Take a shooter you really love and get as good as it as you can before getting bored with it (though how you could get bored of a shooter is beyond my capabilities for understanding).

Ok. If it brings you joy then go ahaid. My post was an explanation of why it doesn't bring me joy. "Oooooooooooooooooooh. I only scored 856321 points when I was really aiming for 856400Rob wrote:lol, "trying your best" and getting fun (oops) out of the process is key.Iluvretro wrote:But in all honesty, unless you get a perfect score, highscores don't mean shit. See I don't get that, unless there was some (official) ranking or some shit. Now if you had a perfect score if that is even possible lol) you could say "I finally owned that game completely" and sell i on eBay. Hmmmm...that would suck the fun out if it wouldn't it.

As with the last topic of this kind, I still always go for the 1CC, doing my best to avoid medals so I don't go out of my way in games I don't need to. I do try not to use bombs though, because I need a consistent playthrough pattern, which bombs slow down the process of. I also tend to not care about/get into second loops at all.
I have a competing-against-the-world feeling when going for score, which may be a reason I never go for score in any games, since I can just feel that the investment in time and energy would be too overbearing for me. The 1CC is an attainable goal, one I can focus on and consider the conclusion to a gaming experience.

I have the feeling that you have no real idea what 2D arcade gaming is all about. It isn´t about beating a game, but achieving high scores. Scores have always been the focus in arcade games, rooting back in the days when game were "endless" and no matter how hard you tried, it would continue (not counting that guy who has beaten Pacman, to a point where the game just crashes). There is a good reason for looping games, because arcade games don´t want to beaten - they want you to come back again and again.Iluvretro wrote:Ok. If it brings you joy then go ahaid. Besides, the "PWNing the game and selling it on eBay" describes the mindstate of "having beaten" a game instead of playing for score. It´s the typical modern attitude towards how games should be played - "finishing" them. Most modern shmups could be played into all eternity because of the subtilities that score systems have. And yeah, shmups certainly overstrain many peoples patience and frustration limits. If all people just played for survival, many games would have been beaten and then cast aside. But people are still breaking records in games that are 5, 10, 20 years old.
The argument "just do what you think is fun" might be fine with some people, but in this case we could just leave this whole topic alone and go with "everybody is a winner in his/her own special way". It simply avoids competition.
And what also bothers me is that we are still talking about ALL shmups. There are horis and verts, console and arcade shmups, "memorizers" like R-Type (nobody will ask you what your high score in R-Type is), endlessly looping games like Gradius, games that lose their entire point if not played for score (Psyvariar), games that reveal so much more of them if played for score (DDP, Batrider), games that combine survival with scoreplay very tightly (Mars Matrix, Garegga, Progear), and games that have a very oldschool scoring system (Strikers 1945 series).
So, what shmups are you people playing that makes playing for score to tedious and pointless for you?
And let me repeat it: Playing for score ALSO includes trying to survive; score ADDS to the experience. When people say "I just play for survival" they mean "I ignore the scoring mechanics".As I said, this doesn´t apply to a lot of games like R-Type or maybe Strikers, but to a lot of games it does. All the strategy threads would be useless except for "how do I dodge this?".

SFIII3S grades the player and gives a score. Higher grade takes precedence over high score, ie my 1cc with ryu scored maybe 1.9 mil with an "A" and I have 2.8 mil scores with Ken, and no 1cc.
I try to max points from the first tho, and learn to survive at the highest level/Rank I can reach.
Does any of this make sense? CAN YOU HEAR ME????

Yes I get it. You're all real gamers and I don't understand what gaming is all about.FrederikJurk wrote:In that case it wouldn´t even matter since the score would indicate that you´ve already used a continue.Iluvretro wrote: "Oooooooooooooooooooh. I've tried to play for score and even compete with some friends though I always come out on the bottom, and it got to the point I was no longer enjoying my games. I can't even post any scores here as I'll get laughed off the board. I finally figured that if I play for FUN then I usually will get further and sometimes have a decent score to boot. I am not skilled as most at these games even though I have been playing console shooties since 1987. Maybe thats my problem, I never got into the arcade scene and I didn't get into video games until the NES days. Matter of fact I play all shooties and games for that matter with a d-pad controller where some purist here will only play with arcade stick.
I was playing ESPgaluda and have a friend who can score some mad points. Hell I even watch the dvd and saw what kind of points they were racking up. Any time I even tried to get any points in this game I'd play like shit and ended up hating the game.
I guess I play shooties because I like the "rush" I get. I can't explain it. I met others who enjoyed the genere but score was the main focus and led to unofficial scoring competitions and I got caught up in the storm and ended up not liking shooties as much as I had before and really lost myself. I wanted to get back to my roots so I had to go back to "my" basics. Play the way I had when I was in my prime and find my level of maximum enjoyment. Part of that was getting as far as I could and try to get further everytime I played. Score was secondary in that aspect for me.
I guess I may not be a competitive person as I suck in competition. I truly enjoy shooters and have a deep passoin for them though others who enjoy the genere do so for completely different reasons. I guess as always I am the outcast I never have done anything right. The story of my life.

Now, now. Thinking that way will get you a bad case of self-fulfilling prophecy.I never have done anything right. The story of my life.
I'm slightly below average in almost everything I do. That is, I can do everything I try, but never get really good at it. No need to start thinking you suck at life because of that.

Are you expecting to score well without learning techniques/stage layouts for hours and hours? Score games like this are for people who like fine details, simple as that.Hell I even watch the dvd and saw what kind of points they were racking up. Nope. I think people only care about their own scores for the most part.I can't even post any scores here as I'll get laughed off the board

Nah, least that's not how I view it...though everyone's line between "casual" ("fun") and "non-casual" play is different, I try to score as best I can via my limited abilities on every game I play, though I still consider myself playing "for fun." Others go super-analytical and restart the first stage a dozen times per play to squeeze every last point they can out of something and still consider it "fun," so there'll never be a hard-and-fast definition of this.Rob wrote:Fun, again = not playing for score. That's pretty much true: go ahead and post, it's not as big a deal as you think.Nope. I think people only care about their own scores for the most part.

I was just trying to be in the region of those good scores. alas I'm not even on the same planet. I think the dvd has like 4 mil after stage 1, i can only get 1 million. I was hoping for 2 million...Are you expecting to score well without learning techniques/stage layouts for hours and hours? Score games like this are for people who like fine details, simple as that.

I guess I had a come to a point to where I wasn't enjoying shooties anymore and had to figure out why. Thats why I started this topic (again) and been more active on the board as of late...

It's fun looking back at laughable scores and you don't get that pleasure unless you have them recorded.Sonic R wrote: I guess I'll post some more scores though I looked at a couple titles and yeah they are pretty low
Score should be a way of increasing the longevity of favorite games. Try a variety of scoring systems before giving up on the idea. I think Cave's are the opposite of fun, but there are a few others I love.I guess I had a come to a point to where I wasn't enjoying shooties anymore and had to figure out why.
