I've really been getting into Darius II lately (Saturn port). :D

On the hip, cool front, Under Defeat has also been yoinking a great many of my hours.

Just out of curiosity, what do you chaps think are our chances of seeing another Darius game any time soon?

Quite simply, my game of the year for 2006 is Under Defeat.

As for revisited classics, I really enjoyed Gokujyou Parodius.

hmm i really didn't enjoy under defeat much ...
even ibara wasn't that good for me compared to other cave and raizing games but i guess it still wins on the new shooter front..

old games would be progear (on psp) and garegga (always my fave !)

From the 2006 releases It must be Under defeat, it injected a lot of interest in my casual gamer mates as well which helped it get lots of playtime on gamenights..

Radilrgy was also good... Senko ne Ronde is also ace.. but not really a shooter as such

I suppose Last Hope has not arrived just yet (22nd Dec) so I look forward to playing that.

Wow, I expected Ibara to take this by a landslide, seems like it isn't that popular at all.

Anyway, I mostly enjoyed Ibara and Batrider this year.

Out of Under Defeat, Radirgy and Ibara, I cast my vote for Gun.Smoke.

'06: Radirgy (great for a quick go)
'05: Ibara (had the PCB since the middle of '05, so the PS2 release doesn't count ^_-)
Old: Armed Police Batrider (after taking over the score thread, the competition gained momentum)
'07: Pink Sweets (it shall be mine!)

New: Radirgy

Old: Ketsui (maybe not so old)

I'd love to say under defeat just because of the impact it made on release, but I'm going to have to give it to Radirgy for being insanely fun.

I also had the pleasure of enjoying 27" of tate Ketsui pcb goodness, and it was insanely good.

When was this? Also, how much? Did you pay those extortionist prices Dream Stars Japan or whoever were charging? ...questions remain, but that's enough question marks for now.

My most played shmup of 2006 was Mushihime-sama (PS2 and then PCB).
Second was Espgaluda II. Third was Mushihime-sama Futari. It's hard for me to pick a favorite amongst those three, so I'll just call it a three-way tie.

I dont have time to play as much as i want, but this year ive been working on Gradius II: Gofer no yabou on PC Engine CD. Ive also been playing a game here and there of Gradius III SNES, Space Megaforce/Super Aleste SNES, and Gradius V PS2.

I REALLY need a good joystick for my PC Engine.

FM-Towns

Alltynex - Definitely my favorite shooter right now. Its a doujin shooter by Siter Skain, and they did such an awesome job with the graphics, music, and especially the weaponry system. Your airplane can transform into a robot, and each form has a set of two weapons. For the airplane you have vulcans and homing missles. If you switch to the robot, you have a beam saber for melee attacks and a beam cannon to do massive damage. The game isn't perfect, there are some slight slow down. I don't mind though, the game is fast, fun, its freeware.

This is off topic, but Dream Stars Japan always gives me awesome prices on everything. I just email him with what i want, and the prices he gives me are always much better than his ebay auctions. I bought almost my entire PC Engine collection from him over the last year or so.

Well, that's cool. I'll have to try it out.

What shape was the game in (Tatsujin Ou)? $150 is still high if it's messed up or doesn't have the outer case...otherwise...that's a very acceptable deal.

@Knuckles-chaotix

Wow $150 without the case! That seems way too much, next time try shopping on YHJ (if you know someone in japan or sign up with a japanese shopping service like MailOrderJapan.com)
YHJ sometimes have cheaper prices on imports compared to ebay. I usually shop there for most of my MSX hardware.

Here is one auctions for Tatsujin Ou going on right now.

Ehh, that manual looks kinda messed up...I'll be watching that one to get an idea how much it's "worth," though! Hopefully that Stratovox will sell soon so I'll have some money to pursue the game properly.

Also, on MSX hardware, I bet that the savings on, say, a Turbo-R wouldn't be so great after you'd paid the high shipping (assuming you can find a Turbo-R on eBay that's being sold in your home country, that is).

My favorite shootie of this year was Under Defeat.

For older shooties this year I spent some quality time with Raiden DX, Keio Flying Squadron, Zero Gunner 2, Mushihimesama, Battle Garegga, Batsugun....always playing Twinkle Star Sprites when friends come by.

Senko no Ronde Revision X makes it for my year, and will probably stay that way for the next couple of years unless I see ZUN, Treasure, Studio Siesta, or even someone else do something really unique with the genre, like Geometry Wars.
