Typhoon 2001 = excellent Tempest 2000 clone

Post by kong »

I wasn't sure if Tempest style tube shooters are considered shmups on this board so I threw this in off topic.

This is an amazing freeware Tempest 2k clone. The game has the blessing of Minter so it will be interesting to see how much further the developer takes it.

Another great game inspired by Tempest is Gforce. http://www.merseyremakes.co.uk/gibber/

The freeware hits just keep coming lately.

I would call them shmups they are actually gallery shmups projected onto a polar grid. And I did like that game too.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Typhoon 2001 looks damn bitchin'!... ^_~

I d/l this little Typhoon demo and was blown away by the razor sharp graphics...damn, this Tempest 2000 inspired clone should've looked this sweet on the PS2 console hardware (assuming if an graphical overhaul were attempted on the original PSX version of 'Tempest X3' game and ported to the PS2...looks fucking sweet!)

Thumbs up to ol' Mr. Minter giving his thumbs up to this particular Typhoon 2001 demo... ^_~

The only thing missing is a really good "arcade quality" rotatary-knob spinner controller with 3-button setup and you're in Tempest heaven..... ^_~

I like how one can use the PC mouse as another alternative method of playing with this Typhoon 2001 demo. ^_~

I've also been suggested Tsunami 2010, a clone of Tempest 3000.

Tsunami 2010, for some reason, doesn't have Minter's blessing. Too bad, because it's absolutely awesome. Unlike a lot of the others, which just simply clone T2K's gameplay, Tsunami 2010 actually extends it and goes in a different direction. Scoring is based on accuracy and item-based multipliers. Picking up the particles left behind from a defeated enemy increases your multiplier, but shooting lowers it. So you end up trying to be as accurate as possible in order to minimize the number of shots you make.
