Maybe he was going for extra "per-shot" points or something?
The guy doing those original mode replays likes to play difficult challenges. In Espgaluda 2, for example, he only played in "max kakusei-over" mode from start to finish. I think he's the only guy to have 1CCed Galuda 2 that way thus far. So, I wouldn't read much into any scoring technique in those vids, he's just a masochist!

I'm ordering a Mushi 2 kit tomorrow guys! Will be happy to answer any Qs you might have after it arrives. :D

Either you're correct and Abnormal Type is weaker than Normal Type, or Reko is the lower powered of the two main characters.

Well, the name of his site is "Aka souko" which is the Japanese term for "kakusei only". I believe he got to Arrange mode 5-2 in the original Galuda that way (someone did anway).

Reko's abnormal shot is incredibly weak. In one replay, the guy is unable to even kill the first midboss before it flies away. Not sure what the idea was for it, but everyone I see pick it at the arcade never tries it again.

In regards to the soundtrack, I think it's way better than the first game's. The boss music alone wins, but stage 5 is good stuff too.

twe, congrats on your purchase! I don't think it'll let you down.

I think the music is great too. Stage 4's music is my fave.

Reko's normal type is the best ship in the game. Very strong pierce shot (you'll skip entire patterns in most bosses due to her killing them so fast) and the normal fire covers the whole screen when fully powered. The downside is her speed, but I'm trying to switch from Palm to her since she gets so many points.

Still, I made it to the last boss today with 2 lives in stock but couldn't sink her. Probably would've been a good idea to not die 15 seconds into the first level...

Maniac seems to be most popular, with few people bothering with Original anymore. I saw another guy beat it today and while he did get an ending and an ALL by his score, there was no staff roll. So either you only see the credits after you beat Maniac or there is some more to it. My guess is it's like the first game where Maniac has a true final boss, but Original doesn't. I'm not familiar with the series' story, but the guy that rides the true final bug in the first game is present in the Epilogue.

btw, Mak Japan had a Futari kit they were selling for 238,000 yen, so twe you got yourself a bargain.

I noticed that Reko (Abnormal Type) seems to move at a constant speed regardless of whether she is using Shot or Rapier, which is interesting as in most Cave games using the Laser-type attack would slow the player down to over half-speed. It makes Reko Abnormal's basic strategy more bullet-leading rather than precision movement through patterns.

It doesn't surprise me that most players would be playing Maniac given the more traditional Cave-styled gameplay and a more interesting scoring system. Original does look like fun though.

Takes Mak ages to mark anything down... this isn't a shocker. Not a good place to buy 6-month old PCBs, for sure.

Thanks for the info on othe game. Will be nice to finally play it in a couple of months.

Pay closer attention to Abnormal Rapier... it actually causes Reko to move faster than Abnormal Standard shot.. The Abnormal shot type seems to be a complete reversal of the Cave Normal shot mechanics.

It was just posted on 2ch that Ultra mode has been unlocked at HEY arcade in Akihabara. If this is true then I'm going to be REALLY happy with my new kit. I just hope unlocking Ultra mode doesn't f'up the hi score saving this time.

So much for "no Ultra Mode", then. ^_-

Any idea what unlocks Ultra, twe?

Dammit why couldn't they have unlocked it when I was there yesterday...

Still, I really hope it's true. If the weather wasn't such shit I'd go right now but I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

No clue yet, and no real confirmation, just a guy posting on 2ch a terse message consisting of "ULTRA MODE HAS ARRIVED!!!! UNLOCKED AT HEY!!!!!!!". It's probably some code like in the first game. Or maybe you have to beat Maniac without dying or bombing, or something silly like that. Anyway, NTSC-J could hop down to Hey soon and let us know.

Might as well start watching the usual replay resources, as I'd expect a nice flood of Ultra Mode related material to appear soon. I'd imagine it to be as absurd as Mushi's Ultra was, and then some.

You know what, there is some indirect evidence that this probably true. This is the fact that the credits don't roll after the ending when you beat Original or Maniac mode. It's the exact same situation in the original Mushi, no credits roll after the ending unless you beat Ultra. So there had to be a loop or Ultra mode, and right now it seems Ultra mode is the more likely scenario.

I also figured there had to be something extra because there's a clear setup for a TLB that doesn't trigger at the end of the maniac videos I've seen. Good thing my suspicion was correct!

Good news, but I'm still cold at the game. On the game system, in particular. If he's really totally gem-based, well, I'm not liking it so much. But anyway this is still Mushi, so after ULTRA we can expect some new on the gameplay (like a new piano mode, lol)

My curiousity got the better of me and I decided to run by HEY before closing time tonight to see this ULTRA mode.

And hooooolllyyyyyy smokes! ULTRA mode is fuggin cracking all over the place! Just try to picture the hardest, coolest, sweetest patterns one can imagine then drop some acid and try to imagine some more! Easily one of the greatest things displayed on a 29" monitor, ULTRA mode in Mushi Futari is one of the highlights of my life. Bless you, Cave.

haha, I kid, I kid. There's no ULTRA mode. Someone at 2ch sucks.

It's just that, except that it's a 2-player play contest, not double play.

Ahh, I see.
Remind me never to use Babelfish again. :P
(Doubleplay would be more interesting, however.)

I thought maybe I was blind or missing the obvious last night, but Danmaku Gata mentions the Ultra mode rumor, saying that despite what the person on 2ch is claiming, there was no Ultra at HEY. So like I said, someone is being a dork. I think we'll just have to keep waiting until some concrete proof comes up that such a thing exists.

Quick question.
Which came first: the code for Mushi's Ultra posted on websites and Japanese BBS like 2ch/arcadeita, or the code printed by Arcadia?

That's a good question Icarus. I don't remember Ultra mode being 'revealed' until at least a month after the game's release in the arcades. Makes sense, as Cave would want people to play Original and Maniac mode first before delving into Ultra.

We'll just have to wait and see!

On the Japanese wiki page for Mushi Futari, there is an "Ultra" mode section up now. There is no confirmation of Ultra mode posted there yet, however they point out a grammatical clue which I found pretty convincing: when you choose Original mode, they use the word motto mo (最も), which means "(the) most", when they say "this is the simplest (lit. "most simple") and easiest to play of the modes". It's a superlative form only used in plural (i.e. more than dual) contexts. Only having Original and Maniac modes would be a comparative (dual) context, and you would only expect a comparative grammatical construction in Japanese, most likely using yori (より), "(more) than". You would need at least one more game mode (=Ultra!) for motto mo to be grammatical in Japanese.
