Koutetsu Yousai Strahl - It's a shooter made by UPL (the most underrated of all shmup developers, imo) in 1992.

Pretty cool game, imo, but nothing that will change your life. Kind of a mix between Boogie Wings and UN Squadron. Check it out in MAME, although I think the music doesn't work.

The thing in the auction is a fan-made perfect play, counter stop DVD, btw.

ASV gone shmuping eh? maybe I should take a crack at looking into this then. If it's anything like ASV, I bet it'll be fun.

I've tried it in MAME, I thought it was okay, but nothing spectacular.

The AS series really needs a comeback, preferably in 3D and a control style similiar to Gungrave Overdose. Simple, slick, and with some touch-ups could make one fast mech game.
But that's off topic on a completely different level.

This game plays fairly well, though I hat how it likes to throw in cheapshots where playing the game for the first time gets you killed... alot. the hitbox is quite the mess, since at first I thought it was the whole craft instead of just it's body. there's also the fact they throw enemies in behind you with no reason or warning, guaranteeing you to stick with the homing weapon on some levels, or avoid sitting in the back of the screen.
Eh, I will admit though, despite it's flaws, it's pretty fun.

well, im not a fan of 3rd persen shooters at all so im of different opinion ;)

id prefer to see something with slick 2D graphics ala legend of mana (but ofcourse set in the AS universe) and a mix of strategy and action gameplay as seen in "Gun hazard"..

regardless i agree that the AS series definetly needs another chapter!!

ive bought strahl btw.. should be arriving in a week or two :P

FUNFACT: The Strahl is actually the name of the Airship you use in Final Fantasy XII.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

FUNFACT #2: Strahl is also a game akin to Dragon's Lair on the Saturn, which is why the thread title threw me off loop.

USAAF Mustang is pretty cool. Really simple, and objectively speaking nothing special at all, but just so much fun. Kinda the same thing as with Storm Blade. :)

As I said, I think UPL is one of the most underrated developers ever. Atomic Robo Kid, Omega Fighter, Gomola Speed... so much good stuff that is so rarely talked about. :?

Funfact #5: There's a port of USAAF Mustang on Megadrive called Fire Mustang.

AFAIK Mustang was developed by NMK, i don't know about Strahl but it sure looks more like UPL than NMK.

Then what use would I have for This thing? :P

Anyways, I guess that I should play Strahl more, but dammit if Garegga hasn't managed to suck me in. And I thought I hated it.

well, you can make a cool boss out of that 3d render :P

garegga is a fine choice, a better game is hard to find (i highly doubt strahl is it).

Funfact #???

Strahl is rather easy.

(At least for the first two levels. Similar to Black Heart in that respect.)

Twin Lasers are useless, as usual. Hori + homing seems to be my winning combo. Charge and Shield were fun for giggles, while Expand seemed plain useless in comparison to Homing (plus the cost...ach)

Agreed, about UPL being underrated! It's quite a shame that Omega Fighter never got any home ports; I played it on MAME, and it's awesome! :D
