Comics.... that don't suck

I was curious if anyone here reads Y the last man, The walking dead, or Ex Machina?

I haven't read comics for years other than Berserk. A friend of mine game me a stack to read and I'm totally hooked on all three.

The art in Y the last man blows but thats not the reason I read it...
All three of these have really good stories and writing. They don't really feel juvenile at all.

All these are great american comic's except for Oreintal Heroes and DMC.OH is Chinese and DMC is Canadian.(But you can find em at american comic stores).

Hellboy he has me starting on, Akira I have read long ago along with batman dark knight returns, the others i haven't heard of or haven't read..

Watchmen is better than all of them put together, but my personal favorite series is Miracleman.

For manga, Berserk is far and away the king.

I'm not an Alan Moore expert by any stretch, but I really preferred From Hell over Watchmen. The violent B&W art and the crazy amounts of research into that story made it for me.

Berserk, I agree, rules all. It's only too bad that the US versions come out so slowly...

I don't know if most people think there is a difference, but I don't consider 'manga's' or graphic novels to be comics, although in the same vein.
I also don't know whether many of the mentioned titles (excluding Bone) would fall into the GN category, in which case, is the reason I only put Flaming Carrot, a comic book, as a recommendation since that's the topic as described.
However, I don't think I really have any GN/Manga recommendations anyway (apart from Love Hina or maybe Initial D).

Just my two cents.

Given that you have already read Akira, next on my list of favorites on the list is probably From Hell. I know everybody says how awesome Watchmen is... and don't get me wrong it is awesome, but From Hell was very intense and interesting. If you like a good detailed murder mystery. Even if you don't think you do, I'd try reading some of it at Barnes and Noble or something. I got hooked.

I totally forgot to mention Berserk... I've read up to the most current US issue. I saw the tv show and could not deal without knowing more.

It's a shame how Berserk is so far ahead of every other manga, since there's just so much manga out there, but even compared to Western comics it's still the best long-running series in the medium. At first glance it appears to be a regular medieval fantasy story, but the levels of emotional depth and character development are untouched. Plus it has the most memorable and intense action sequences ever put on a page.

I wouldn't let the kids read it, though...lots of graphic sexual violence abounds.

Dark Horse is picking up the pace with the translations starting with volume 13 (which catches readers up to where the anime series ended), releasing a new volume every other month. As someone who's read all 30 Japanese volumes cover to cover many times, I can confidently say to those who only know the anime that it is consistently awesome. Volume 31 is out on Friday and I'll be first in line at the gas station to buy my copy.

Another great Japanese series that gets no love is Wild 7. I think it's had some volumes translated, but it's a great action series from the early 70s with kickass action that should not be missed.

I'm a big comic guy, but i feel kind of burned by the way things are done in the industry. A great creative team will be placed on the first 4 or 5 issues of a book and then leave for something else before even finishing thier story (New Avengers cough cough), it's just aggravating. Usually they get replaced with a mediocre team to add to the gheyness.

Still, i could never stop collecting. I pretty much just pick up those few issues of each series with good creative teams. I suppose the next one is this new Wetworks with Portacio - i'm betting on 5 issues before he's gone.

Man, it would have been nice for Van Sciver to stay on Green Lantern for a little while.

Not really much to add. Obvious nods to Moore (really, what more can one say?) Although I think I disagree about Watchmen being his best. I might be tempted to take From Hell and V for Vendetta over that one, but all three are essential.

Recently introduced to The Invisibles, which seems interesting if nothing else.

Hellboy (when still drawn by Mignolia) never fails, but so many of the other heavy hitters are sometimes dissapointing (IE Cerebus). Man, it is a tough genre because those who are doing straight pulp generally aren't interesting, while those who strike out away from it, often don't have the talent to maintain such an elevated position.

In the world of manga (feel the same sort of problem here), I keep pointing back to Tezuka (who I think excels more--and I suspect there would be universal agreement if all his stuff was actually in print). Very hard to go wrong with the man, even his stories for children are great.

Berzerk does seem like a lot of fun, but I don't know if it is king. I'd take Lone Wolf and Cub over it. On the other hand, I don't think as huge a story LW&C is, that it is as big as Berzerk which seems to be never ending. Greatly anticipating the next issue.

And yeah, Flaming Carrot wais great, though it seemed to get old fast...

It's odd, considering all the comics I've gone through, but I've hardly read any Batman. It's a pretty daunting property to approach, but I guess the obvious place to start is with Dark Knight Returns, Killing Joke and maybe Arkham Asylum. Anyone got some other Batman graphic novels recommendations?

DKR and Killing Joke are both totally awesome. Arkham Asylum is a turd best left to unwashed fanboys. Year One is the best miniseries aside from DKR.

Because it is the century of sensory overload. I'm sure I was thinking of Carrot Top distribution...the comedian; I've already forgotten him.

I was always into Manga over Western comics when I was younger but after picking up Batman: Year One and then Watchmen I have become totally hooked. Since then I've been reading mostly DC stuff like The New Frontier, Kingdom Come (freakin' awsome!!), and Crisis on Infinite Earths. I also really liked Batman: The Cult.

Right now I'm looking for some more 80's early 90's superheros comics before a lot of artists started drawing in more Manga-influenced style. Does anyone have any particular recommendations?
