Does your console know if you have a HDTV?

Post by neorichieb1971 »

I was just wondering how on earth it works. If I put my TV in 480i mode the game boots up in 480i. If a HDTV is put into 480p mode the console automatically detects it and prompts you to change to prog scan.

So how does this work?

What console detects progressive mode and asks you to set it?

Gamecube will do it on boot up. Burnout 2 does on PS2 bootup (I'm thinking burnout 2 might be a memory card thing).

PS2 progressive DVD option is grayed out when plugged into SDTV, but when plugged into HDTV the option is lit again

I'm using component cables throughout.

Maybe there is another explanation.

That's odd. My slim PS2 is dumb as hell, it always tried to play DVD movies in 480p when hooked up by component cables, despite the standard-definition TV. I can't seem to set any options for the DVD driver, either, where's the option located? Anyway, I ended up going back to the S-Video cables for the PS2 and picked up a real DVD player for the TV's component input.

Component cables have some pin on high.
Scart cables have another pin on high and so on.
Atleast I've read somewhere it would work like this.

Isnt there an option in the main options?

Pressing select whilst in DVD player mode has the option to go progressive or not. However if your already in progressive mode and you don't have 480p compatilbity its hardly any use to you

Just take your PS2 round someones house who has 480p and disable it.

Well, I don't think so. Since for most console, you need to activate the Processive Scan mode manually. :o

That seems unlikely, you should check again. Unless your component cables are psychic, they should have no knowledge of the technology they are being plugged into ;)

GC and PS2 only prompt if you've set it before and saved.

Well, how does your Dreamcast know it's using VGA or RGB and then prompts you that the game doesn't support that mode ?
It's the pin story.

Yes, because the direct connector to the dreamcast uses different pins/signals so it's obvious which mode it's in.

However, detecting a 480i vs 480p capable device over component cannot use that method. Component has no provisions for capability enumeration back to the source device. There is no pin or wire the display device can set high/low/whatever to signal back to the source what resolutions it's capable of.

Because they're different cables?

Sorry I'm late to this. I believe it detects the cables. I guess it could detect the signal, which would be like knowing the TV is HD.

Nope, its not the cable.. I use the component cables on my SDTV and it doesn't prompt progressive scan. Only when I connect to the HDTV does it prompt me.

Yes, that's very close. The DC VGA cable actually got a certain pin of the Vedio Pinout shorted. The DC console treat this as single to activiate VGA mode.

If the console found the game you try to start dosen't support VGA mode, it prompts and stop execution. :o
