How did you score 38 million in Neo, Zach? I thought my score was pretty damn good already...

You know how you usually end up with four billion lives in reserve and you don't get a bonus for them at the end of the game like in Zanac? Make your own life bonus: anytime you've got a really good combo bonus going, start killing yourself and ramming the six boxes that always appear upon death.

This is especially good in the last level; build up a good combo before the second fortress, then start your suicide run. Time it out, then just ram everything else to death (especially the Zanac clones, they take quite a bit of time to take out this way.) Pretty much ignore the final boss; contrary to my FAQ its forms do eventually time out, but you'll still have a lot of time to nail what should be 15000+ point boxes at this point.

Damn, that's a nice score, Zach. I would love to have a score to post, as this is one of my all-time favorites, but I find keeping a chain going pretty tough. There are just so many items on screen.

One question: What is the FC Custom? How do you access this ship?

OMFG I didn't know that.

Thanks a lot for the tips. I will try it someday.

From the FAQ:

Code: Select all

[XIV.1] Obtaining the FC Custom
==============================

There are two ways to obtain the FC Custom ship:

1. Save game data from the original Zanac (you don't even have to play
it), then create a player file in Zanac Neo and play 20 games using
    it.
2. At the ship select screen, press Left, Left, Up, Up, L1, R1, L1,
    R1, L2, R2.
I probably need to reword the first one a bit (having created the Neo file first is OK, you just need to have both 20 games or more on it and some original Zanac data saved.)

Wow, this FAQ is insanely rich. I plan to print it out and study it carefully. I especially like that you begin with quotes from Haugeland and Turing. (I've taught articles by both. I especially like an article by Haugeland titled "Objective Perception.") In any case, thanks a lot-- this will help much.

Interesting. I never knew that the A.I. would react to what weapon you are using. I basically stuck with Weapon 1 on the Hammer Duke for the entire game. I suppose having such a narrow field of fire forced me to learn how to manipulate enemies quick-like.

Wayne Yoshida did that, as well as probably anything else cool you'll find in the FAQ. :)

I hope to improve on this score soon. Perhaps posting this will give me further motivation to do so.

Thanks, twe. Up until a few weeks ago I completely ignored this part of the Forum, but now I'm completely hooked. I have scores listed for Gunbird 2 and Shienryu as well. I'm also working on Strikers 1945 I and SnS II, but I'm only getting to level 4 in these at this point and I want to do better.

I think I'm going to focus on some other games now, so I'll mention my slightly improved score:

MadSteelDarkness - 9,831,550 - 404 - N/A - FC Custom

I finished with 15 lives to spare. I need to try the suiciding trick (and learn how to chain better), and see if I can't improve that score a smidge.

OK, I am definitely going to stop playing this for a little while (trying to convince myself). I have to get back to Strikers.

Here's a really old score of mine that I'm trying to improve on now.
Zanac Neo
gameoverDude - 25197630 ALL - 999 Hit - 30 MC - Knife Edge

My favorite KE weapons would have to be 4 (Drill Missile), 7, and a fully powered 6 (the triple grenade). Triple grenades make it hard for anything to get away when timed right, thanks to the hellish damage they do.

I kinda figured this now, and kick myself for not trying it earlier. Plasmablood has a fuckton of lives left over at the final boss, thanks to going No Miss all the way. Cashing out remaining ships at 90K (6 x 15K) a pop sounds like a good proposition. I think the last boss' hidden timer would be long enough to allow killing off most of 50-60 ships or so. Charge shots here aren't too great of an idea unless you're ready to do the last boss in.

The Zanac clones are best finished off with a charge shot. IINM, doing so will help your jackpot considerably.

On the first boss, it's probably best to LEECH. Those spinning pink discs that come out can add up as you keep whacking them.

I almost broke my old record- the one I got tonight was only around 300K short. Being a bit rusty due to not having played in awhile, I failed to Full Combo a few of the stages. I did some serious leeching on the final boss and can now see 30M+ being doable with an FC on every stage.
