About
The Shooting Game Tournament 2006 is a friendly score competition among users of shmups.com. The score validation works like in the hiscore threads. So you just play the game on PCB, emulator or any console port and post your score which you don't need to prove. (However if you are a troll be prepared to be asked for snapshots or other verifications)

Starting Date: Monday, 21st August 2006

Playing Week #1: Horizonzal Week (21st August - 27th August)
Playing Week #2: Raizing Week (4th September - 10 September)
Playing Week #3: Retro Week (18th September - 24th September)
Playing Week #4: Psikyo Week (2nd October - 8th October)
Playing Week #5: Hidden Gem Week (16th Ocotober - 22nd October)
Playing Week #6: Cave Week (30th October - 5th November)

There will be one week break after each Playing Week.

Rules

Players and their Teams

To handle all the joining players, they will be divided into teams. Every team consists of a minimum of 4 players to a maximum of 7 players. Each week every team member can play, but only the best 3 scores of a team will count for the overall rankings. (a ranking independent highscoretable will be displayed as well) So the teamsize is esspecially good in cases where a player skips a game because he don't own / can't emulate it or is just busy with real life. So in a team consisting of 5 players, even if 2 players skip a game the team can still get it's full 3 ranking slots and don't lose on points.

How can I join? Just post your desire in this thread.
What decides what team I am on? The teams are mainly based on regionals, but sometimes they depend on random interests.

Game Selection

Each Playing Week will have a certain theme, for example a certain company, subgenre, game series, system, release date. All potentially interesting and probably easy to access games for this theme will be put into a pool. Now roughly 2 days before this week starts a special voting thread will be created. And the game which gets the most votes will be played.

Might be fun, but with so many Japanese PS2 and PCB game players, I can't help but wonder if I'd even be able to take part due to a possible lack of owning the actual game

At this rate we can get more than 2 teams. Smaller, maybe. I think that would be more interesting (4-5 or so?).

hows bout keeping the country vs country aspect of it all, would be kinda fun :)

for overall brackets only the top scorers from each country count or something like that?
that way we can have a player bracket and a country bracket (and italy may still become champions after all ;) )

ed: i like the idea of keeping it biweakly as well.. ive got to juggle a personal life and a job on top of my shmupping ;)

I will contribute. And perhaps having regional teams might be a good idea.

Now this sounds like fun! I'd like to join in. Maybe Gaijinpunch and I (and possibly Wanderer too) could make up a Hawaii team. If you want to do regional teams.

If we have captains picking teams, I probably will get picked last. Still, to the extent that I have the time, I will be happy to participate.

Hehe, I like the idea of teams. :D

We could form teams of 3-5 players. Maybe 3 play a game the others can be reserve players. So you can alternate your "playing formation" per game. And this way all teams can participate even if some teammembers doesn't own a particular game. :)

If we'd go with multiple teams:
First we might do them by regionals (which really sounds fun) but could let certain players drop out. For example lots of users here are from USA or UK. So spots in these teams would be hard to get...
But we might find a different solution for everyone who wants to participate. (Maybe create more teams for a certain country i.e. USA 1 and USA 2... or USA eastside / USA westside) :)

So here is some idea how the system could work:
Each week a theme will be selected. Then a game for this theme will be randomly picked from a pool. (See the explanations in the old thread)

Now all teams get one week to play. All team member posts their scores in a thread. Where the current highscores are listed. At the end of a week the teams get scores depending on their positions.

For example:

1. player A-A (Team A) 40 pts
2. player B-A (Team B) 30 pts
3. player B-B (Team B) 25 pts
4. player A-B (Team A) 20 pts
...

Now in the team ranking Team A had 60 pts and Team B 55 pts.
We could also show the seperate scores for each player alone. ;)

PS: And I think Icarus has a good idea to have breaks between the games.

However, this is one possible one way how we could do this.

Emulation is OK for those with less fortunate collections, right? I hope.

An emulator is fine too.
Or a port if you have it.

I'm not sure how you intend to divide the players up if you are thinking of splitting up larger groups into smaller groups. Balance would be an important factor in the final groupings to ensure that all teams have a fair chance of doing well.

MORE PARTICIPANTS!

I feel sad because no-one ever chooses Amiga shmups for these competitions. I will now drink myself into oblivion to tackle the unfairness of it all.
I'd love to see how our fellow shmuppers make out with the likes of Apidya or Carcharodon. Or Project X. That would really be something ;)

We could make an Amiga week too. I'd be up for a wide range of different shmups. :D

And I am still interested into a super retro week (pre 1985 shmups) like Xevious, Exerion, Star Force, Galaga... ;)

I dunno how everyone else thinks about this. We should just try to avoid broken games. (some older console shmups have possibilities for infinity milking)

Any other ideas for themes or rules in general?

I am going to gather ideas, themes, participants in the first post of the thread.

I'm in, though I doubt I'd be able to play all the games as I only have my DC and my PS2.

I'd been throwing an idea around likek this in my head for a while and posted about it earlier.

I'd participate even though I'd only be able to do select games.

LOL, nice fix. ^_-
I was waiting for someone to get the reference. ^_-

@Edge:
Keep it simple, and try to throw it out to as many people as possible. The team idea sounds like it might work, as those without the game can sit it out or switch for a team member that can take part, and it allows player flexibility with regards to the time played.
