I was wonderring if there was a game out that was a shmup game where ships and stuff came out and tried to blow the crap out of you, and at the same time, you had to try to shoot and kill a vs player. I know of senko no rondo, but I'm thinking of something more closelly related to a shmup, and not JUST one on one.
Twinkle Star Sprites pretty much matches your description exactly -- despite being pretty cutesy -- and Change Air Blade is also very much along those lines. Both are very fun games.

Twinkle star sprites isn't direct though. It's more of a set off obsticles game.
I have not seen change air blade... I'll have to look into it.

In case you're not aware, this one never got a home port, though it is emulated in MAME. There's a review of it on the shmups.com main page if you want to get an impression of it.
Someone needs to make a REAL versus shooter. IE one dude controls the ship while the second player decides which enemy formations to bring in on the fly and controls them, the boss etc.
You guys need to think older. Demons To Diamonds (Atari 2600) may not be much to look at now, but it matches the OP's description pretty well, at least as much as I recall.

Agreed. *Imagines playing as Big Core Mk. III or Hibachi*

Change Air Blade (1999 Sammy) already does all of that. Adding a handicap feature to this game would greatly improve multi-player mode.
It's called Harmotion (http://www.harmotion.com). It's only been 3 months of dev. so far, but we've already got a playable version up if you want to check it out.
