The WORST Shooter you have ever played...

Post by Harlequin »

Hi

Here is a new thread to help me stay away from
shooters that dont deserve my hard earned dollars :D

I have played alot of stinkers in MAME, i just cant
remember the titles.

Which are the 5 worst shooters you have ever played?

Cheers

I hate tons of shooters that are loved on this board. Besides if the game is really that bad its probably bargain basement material anyways.

It is not a wise question to ask, Harlequin - whenever one mentions a game, there will be people who'll defend it, following Ghegs' law (his signature) and this will generate negative karma.

It's much better to ask "Which ones are your favorite?" - this way, everyone will be able to post their choices, complimenting on each other for the fine choices on their respective lists, drooling at how much shmup goodness is around.

Basically, you'd get mentioned (roughly) the same titles either way. It's always the same bunch of games which draw the attention, be it love or hate...

I agree about Gunbird 2, didn't like it.. Can't say that its bad though because about 70% of this board loves it

Heh, that was few signatures ago, but just for the honor of having it called a law I'll put it up again.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Not sure, but Alpha Mission on GameBoy is pretty cheap (annoying, hard to hit enemies, etc...)

It's not the worst and I appreciate playing it on the go.

The European (US?) version of Xexex is awful, which is a shame as the Japanese version is the ultimate.

The aero fighters series is rather poor I always thought. 19XX is also a bit crap IMO.

I find these sorts of comments amusing. I'm not going to defend the above titles or anything. But the question definitely was what you consider the WORST shmup to be.

I have troubles believing that either of these can fall under the category of WORST. As the OP said, fire up MAME and try a few random shmups in there. There are games out there that are absolute rot. Some which make me honestly wonder how the hell they ever conned a publisher to release the titles in the first place.

Sure, you might not like a particular score mechanic of a semi-popular title. But saying it is the WORST just as flamebait is a touch silly when it's painfully obvious there are universally agreed shockers out there that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

I was on the SRK forums the other day and the exact same question popped up (albeit about fighting games, as it's a fighting game forum). Of course all the SNK players said SF3:3S was the "worst", and vice versa. As if given the choice between playing something like Tatooed Assassins, War Gods or Primal Rage and 3S, they'd pick any of the former.

Anyways... this thread has the potential to produce a few giggles. Instead of just throwing out the names of semi-popular games you didn't really like that much just in an attempt to irk those people who do happen to like them, howsabout you all put the effort in and find a real stinker of a game?

Worst means just that: the absolute bottom of the pile. Not just bad or irritating, but without a doubt the lowest of the low. Yes, this thread has a high potential for trolling. But I'm sure it can be avoided with a little self control from all.

Volguard II for Famicom.

The music is the worst part. First stage is nothing but 6 notes looping over and over and over and over infinity....

Skull Fang - my most disappointing Saturn purchase

Mars Matrix - Honestly: not just because others seem to like it so much. I first played this on DC as a download when it was first released to see if it was any good, and I felt it was so bad it wasn't even funny. Never in a million years did I think it could ever become popular.

There are probably some really bad ones that I've tried in Mame, but nothing that I can remember the title of. ;)

Carrier Airwing
Arbalester
1942
Gunbirds
Ghost Pilot
Sengoku Ace
Super Swiv
Mystic Riders
Skull Fang
Etc

There's a never-ending list of crap games...

If I had to choose the worst shmup I played ever, it would be Thunder Spirits.

I'm glad to hear i'm not the only person in the world who thinks this is shit, i'm always amazed that anyone likes Takumi games, especially Kyokyoku Tiger 2 which is a real insult to the original.

I agree that's this is a pointless discussion - everyone has played lots of awful shmups, but unless people spend lots of time playing and comparing them how would anyone know which one was "worst"?

For jamma awfulness i think Dooyong (with the possible exception of r-shark) and Comad games are the very worst. In fact they are so bad they become highly entertaining, as is Slapfight on the ZX Spectrum which has some lovely invisible bullets to dodge.

I'd like to nominate Shienryu as the worst shmup. It's stunningly mediocre, but never bad enough to become interesting in any way. Did anyone else here notice that english mag Games tm used to have a bit of a fetish for this game and it used to get a small mention in nearly every issue, until some turd wrote a letter of complaint (stating that shmups "require very little skill"!) at which point the shmups coverage vanished?

As far as I can recall, some fool wrote in to Games TM asking for them NOT to cover shoot'em ups. Saying something like; "I play shmups but could you not devote any space to them please?"
- To which Games TM replied with an affirmative.

1 guy

just 1 guy seems to have stopped 2D Shooter coverage in Games TM mag

This month's Games TM features Casino Arcade (my local) and Ryan Hart (one of the London Fighter headz I've known for many years) - all part of a Fighter Player profile feature.
Time for a Shoot'em up Player profile feature eh?

Back on topic, I won't list my worst shooters as it will simply illicit flames.

that's not really true. issue before last they featured ten of the best shooters on dreamcast, for example.

and panzer dragoon has had many mentions (even if it's on-rails, that's still a shooter) and big write-ups.

i'm on the gamestm forum if you wanna say hello :) but i think a shoot-em-up player profile would be very difficult. here is player "such and such" who plays shooters..... in his bedroom!

but the shmup bible.....? that's what we want !

jpj - Ok point taken on the shooter game features in Games tm.

jpj wrote;

But some of us lucky ones play in the Arcade not at home.

Arcadia magazine did a whole page Profile on Clover TAC. So if they can do it for Ryan Hart, Daigo, Bas etc. then it can be done for shooter players.

What i'm saying is:- It has been done before.

Anyway, Cheers jpj 8) ,

i'm remembering more clearly now - the "no skill required" turd came a few months earlier. The guy who wrote in to ask for less shumps coverage is the one who said he likes shmups but that the genre hasn't developed at all since r-type, the turd. Games TM then agreed they would cut the shmups coverage down significantly, which they did (and they've not made a single mention of Shienryu since then i believe) and continue to do.

As they are doing this game "bible" feature i imagine they will be doing a shmups feature and including some top players in it, though i'm not sure how well informed their fighting game choices were - Ryan is pretty awesome though i doubt he's in the world top 5 (if i might be allowed a small brag here, i drew 1-1 with him in the first round of a SF3:3s ranking battle. i suspect he was having a really bad day :) )

that's true, but i think fighters are a bit different because all the players are in the same hall, in person. whereas shooters are an individual thing, and records set and broken all over the shop. and what about older titles with scores set by players who don't regularly play anymore :(

don't get me wrong, i'd love to see it on the humble pages of gamestm. i just think it would prove more difficult to do.

but hey, ya never know... :)

What, nobody mentioned "The Earth Defend"? I'm appalled. I'd say that's the worst, but then I'm one of the unfortunate souls who has tried Divine Sealing. I played it to see what all the fuss was about, & came away wishing I had that 10 minutes of my life back.
